Last week, Wii sold 11,521 units. This week, following the release of a special red Mario anniversary Wii unit, the system jumped nearly four fold to 39,308 units.
It's unclear how many people picked up the system for the red color and how many people picked it up for the included remixed version of Super Mario Bros. (The "remix" is just the graphic for one type of block being swapped out with the game's 25th Anniversary logo). The surge could also be partially due to standard Wii sales, as the system now includes Wiimote Plus as the default controller.
With the surge, Wii became the best selling console for the week, with twice the sales of the usually dominant PlayStation 3. It almost topped the hardware sales chart as a whole, but that honor narrowly went to the PSP, which saw a small spike presumably due to the release of Tactics Ogre.
The Square Enix strategy remake was the number one selling game for the week, with 176,153 units sold. The week was packed with new releases, but nothing else came close. The PS3 version of Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 placed second with 47,610 units. Wii Sports Resort made it back into the top 10 with 14,438 units for its new Wiimote Plus bundle pack.
