Our top pick for a movie awards contender to stream this weekend is “I Saw the TV Glow,” writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s and producer Emma Stone’s buzzy A24 horror drama.
The film stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Owen and Maddy, suburban teenagers who bond over their love of a TV show called “The Pink Opaque,” which follows psychic teenagers Isabel and Tara as they battle monsters. Eventually, it becomes clear that they are Isabel and Tara, which freaks Owen out. The film is a surrealistic trans allegory with unique visuals and an excellent contemporary indie rock soundtrack that cements Schoenbrun as a filmmaker to watch. The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Conner O’Malley, and Fred Durst (yes, the Limp Bizkit guy). “I Saw the TV Glow” will be a darkhorse Oscar contender and a likely Independent Spirit Award nominee. It’s available on VOD now.

“Remembering Gene Wilder”: The life and career of beloved comedy actor Gene Wilder is the subject of this heartfelt documentary. It features interviews with the “Blazing Saddles” and “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” star’s friends and colleagues like Mel Brooks and Carol Kane and gives special attention to Wilder’s final years when he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. (The film was made with support from the Alzheimer’s Association.) It’s available to stream on Netflix.
“Monkey Man”: Writer-director-producer-star Dev Patel’s “John Wick”-esque action movie is now on Peacock after a modestly successful theatrical run earlier this year. Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”) plays Kid, a man who has spent his life preparing to get revenge on the man who killed his mother. It’s an exciting action flick that doubles as an exploration of social ills in India. Jordan Peele produces.
“Brats”: The so-called Brat Pack — the group of actors who rose to fame performing in the 1985 coming-of-age movies “The Breakfast Club” and “St. Elmo’s Fire” led by Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Judd Nelson — gets the retrospective documentary treatment. The film is directed by Andrew McCarthy, a member of the group who appeared in “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink.” Through interviews with Estevez, Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, and others, McCarthy explores what the Brat Pack’s actors and films signified in the era, and how the controversial label affected their lives and careers. “Brats” is now streaming on Hulu.
