There's a gorgeous world that you can explore in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Still, roaming around on foot can be downright tedious. Thankfully, some fine-feathered friends are willing to help out, if you can manage to catch them, that is. Here's our guide on how to get all Chocobo mounts in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains minor spoilers.
How to get all Chocobo mounts in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The Chocobo mounts are part of the Chocobo Wrangling minigame, which becomes available in certain regions that you visit as part of the campaign. These areas are denoted by Chocobo track icons that appear on your map, too.
Note that Chocobos also have the Scent and Scour actions, allowing them to search for buried items. Moreover, certain species have unique abilities, which are suitable for traversing obstacles and environments in a particular region.
Piko: The Yellow Chocobo of the Grasslands
Region: Grasslands (Chapter 2)
Unique ability: None - He's just your regular Chocobo, but we still adore him.
How to catch the Grasslands Chocobo
This serves as a tutorial to the Chocobo Wrangling minigame. Here's the gist:
- Sneak past the first Chocobo by using the tall grass.
- Pick up the rocks and throw them to make the other Chocobo turn around.
- Move behind Piko and press the Triangle button to catch him.
Belle: The Grey Chocobo of Junon
Region: Junon (Chapter 4)
Unique ability: Wall-climb - We've taken to calling these birds as Grey Chocobos. Compared to the Black Chocobos in the original game (ones that can scale entire mountains), these variants can only climb certain walls denoted by streaks of white and orange paint.
How to catch the Junon Chocobo
The idea here is to activate switches either by hand or by throwing rocks. The switches will then cause the mine carts to move. As for Cloud, you have to make sure that he's crouch-walking alongside the mine cart, using it to block the line-of-sight of the Yellow Chocobos in the area.
The Yellow Chocobos of North Corel
Region: North Corel - Costa del Sol (Chapter 7)
Unique ability: N/A - They're just like the regular Yellow Chocobos in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. You don't need to catch them at all, since you're given a rental key that lets you call on them while you're exploring the wilderness.
As an aside, you can only use these Chocobos in North Corel (i.e. the environment near Costa del Sol). You can't use them in the deserts of South Corel (a different method of transportation awaits you there).
The Green Chocobos of Gongaga
Region: Gongaga (Chapter 9)
Unique abilities: High Jump and Skating - These Chocobos of the jungle can do a high jump by hopping on top of giant mushroom platforms. Moreover, they can skate along large tree branches.
We should note that you don't have to catch these birds at all. However, you do need to complete the main story arc in Gongaga so your party gains access to them.
Aponi: The Teal Chocobo of Cosmo Canyon
Region: Cosmo Canyon (Chapter 10)
Unique ability: Glide - It's not a pony. It's Aponi, a Chocobo variant that can glide through the air. This is done by stepping off industrial fan plates or Glider Ranges, then holding the R2 button. You may also partake in Glide de Chocobo challenges, where you can attempt to soar through the skies while passing through rings with points.
How to get the Cosmo Canyon Chocobo
This is similar to the Junon minigame where you use a cart to block line-of-sight. The difference here is that there are no switches to power the cart automatically. Instead, you have to push the cart along the rails, and then hide behind or beside it if a Chocobo is about to look in your direction.
Selena: The Blue Chocobo of Nibel
Region: Nibel (Chapter 11)
Unique abilities: Water Stream and Glide - The Blue Chocobo can't fly indefinitely, but it can go high up into the air by firing a stream of water from its claws. This can be done as long as there's a body of water below you. If you do this while on land, the hover ability still works, though you don't gain as much height.
How to catch the Nibel Chocobo
Almost all other Chocobos in the game required you to stealthily make your way to reach them. Selena is quite the opposite, since you have to lure her using bait. Toss the bait on the fields below and watch her move toward that spot. You should also wait for the cacti puffs to get smaller before having her pass through each section.
