More than 15 years since the original game launched, World of Goo 2 will release May 23 on Nintendo Switch and PC. The sequel is set to introduce new types of goo--like explosive, growing, and shrinking--to the physics-based puzzle series.

The World of Goo 2 release date was revealed at today's Nintendo Direct. The game will debut as a console exclusive for Switch, including four-player local co-op only found on the hybrid system. A press release adds the sequel will feature more than 64 levels.

World of Goo 2 was unveiled at The Game Awards in December. The trailer for the sequel shows classic bridge-building with the goo, as well as terraforming and what look like goo cannons. The puzzle game comes from the original creators, with developer 2DBoy teaming up with the Tomorrow Corporation. The World of Goo 2 website adds "this is the biggest game we've ever made."

The Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase also featured a number of other notable announcements. For instance, five classic Rare games are now available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, such as Blast Corps on 64. Meanwhile, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is planned to release later this year, and Nintendo pulled back the curtain on Endless Ocean: Luminous. It will be the first entry in the diving series since 2010's Endless Ocean: Blue World.
