House Of The Dragon Renewed For Season 3

Just ahead of the Season 2 premiere, HBO orders a third season of the fantasy series.

HBO has officially ordered a third season of House of the Dragon. The company announced the renewal order for the Game of Thrones spin-off just before House of the Dragon returns for its second season this Sunday, June 16. "The Dance of the Dragons continues," HBO said of the renewal order.

The renewal is no surprise at all, given the creative team behind the show has already talked about plans for Season 3 and even Season 4. House of the Dragon and The Last of Us are two of HBO's most popular current shows, so it's not shocking to see them each continue. Season 2 of The Last of Us, meanwhile, is set for release in 2025.

If you're not a Max subscriber, you can sign up for a free one-week trial to watch the Season 2 premiere (and catch up on Season 1, if needed). This promotion is available until June 23. It's also worth noting that Season 1 on 4K Blu-ray is currently discounted to just $22.49 at Amazon.

Beyond House of the Dragon, HBO is moving ahead with another spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is coming in 2025. Recently, George R.R. Martin announced that HBO was reviving its 10,000 ships spin-off for another pilot attempt, though there is no guarantee it'll get made.

Yet another spin-off show, from The Batman II writer Mattson Tomlin, is in the writing process and will focus on Aegon Targaryen AKA Aegon the Conqueror. This show, however, is "very early days."

One Game of Thrones spin-off series that will not go ahead is the Jon Snow TV series that Kit Harington was developing with Martin and HBO. Before this, HBO spent $30 million on a Naomi Watts-led show called Blood Moon before cancelling it.
