Editor's Take

Cigna offers one of the highest payments for basic care (80%), major care (50%) and orthodontics (50%). The policy also offers $1,000 maximum coverage for orthodontia work, which we found is fairly standard for policies with that coverage. Cigna offers health insurance plans, too, if you’re also looking for health insurance.

Pros

  • $1,500 annual maximum coverage for dental coverage is competitive.
  • The deductible is $50 per person and $150 per family, which is better than other dental plans.
  • One of the best rates for dental insurance policies with braces coverage of the companies we reviewed.

More: Cigna Dental Insurance Review

Cons
  • Six-month waiting period for basic care and 12-month waiting period for major care.
  • Dental implants not covered.
Expert’s Take

The Cigna Dental 1500 plan is robust for orthodontic needs, including braces. It boasts zero deductibles on preventive care and low out-of-pocket costs for braces. Despite a 12-month waiting period for orthodontics, the plan’s comprehensive services at manageable costs make it a valuable option for long-term orthodontic planning.

Editor's Take

Guardian offers one of the cheaper dental insurance policies with braces coverage among the companies we reviewed. We like that not only does the policy have excellent monthly premiums but it also has a low deductible. Another excellent policy with braces coverage is Guardian Diamond, which has an initial higher annual coverage maximum and higher basic care coverage–but also higher premiums.

Pros

  • Annual deductible of $50 is better than other dental insurance policies.
  • No waiting period for basic dental care.
  • 70% reimbursement for basic care is good and 50% for major care is excellent.

More: Guardian Dental Insurance Review

Cons
  • The annual coverage maximum in the first year ($1,000) is less than that of other companies. The maximum increases in the following two years, reaching $1,500 in the third year and beyond.
  • 12-month waiting period for major care.
Expert’s Take

Guardian’s Achiever plan may provide coverage for orthodontic treatment, but policyholders should carefully review the policy terms, including coverage levels and any waiting periods. Confirming network orthodontists accepting Guardian insurance can help ensure access to quality orthodontic care.

Editor's Take

We like that Anthem’s Essential Choice PPO Platinum has only a six-month waiting period for orthodontia care, which is better than some competitors. The Blue Cross Blue Shield company also offers health insurance, so you could get both dental and health coverage from the same company.

Pros

  • 50% reimbursement after a $150 deductible with $1,000 maximum coverage for orthodontia, including $500 a year.
  • Annual maximum coverage of $2,000 for dental coverage is better than many competitors.
  • $50 per person and $150 per family deductible is superior to other dental plans.
  • The policy reimburses 80% for basic care and 50% for major care (following waiting periods).
Cons
  • Slightly higher-than-average dental insurance costs for a plan with orthodontia care.
  • Waiting period of three months for basic dental care.
Expert’s Take

Anthem is definitely one of the best options for kids with braces. Specifically, it’s one of the best options for kids who need braces ASAP, as there is no waiting period.

What Does Orthodontic Insurance Cover?

Dental insurance that covers orthodontia care may help pay for:

  • Clear aligners
  • Clear braces
  • Retainers
  • Traditional braces

Orthodontia coverage is typically limited to those age 18 and under. Dental insurance policies don’t generally cover braces for adults.

Check What the Policy Covers

I’ve found that dental insurance policies vary in what kind of orthodontic services they cover. For instance, check what they cover for pre-orthodontic treatment visit, X-rays, tooth extractions recommended by the orthodontist and orthodontic services, including placement, adjusting and removal and post-treatment care and follow-up. Also make sure it covers the type of braces you want.

See Which Dentists and Orthodontists Accept the Policy

Dental insurance policies may have a provider network. Check to make sure your dentist accepts the plan and that there are specialists in the area, in case you need to get additional care. Depending on the plan, I’ve found that you pay for more or all of the costs if you get care outside of your plan’s network.

Ask About Coverage Limits for Braces

Dental policies with braces coverage generally have maximum coverage limits for that service, which may also include an annual coverage limit. I’d suggest checking about each deductible type and factoring in how those coverage maximums may affect your costs.

Check for Repeat Restrictions If You’ve Had Braces

Dental insurance policies may restrict orthodontic coverage if you had braces previously. I would warn that you may have to pick up all the orthodontia costs in that case.

Understand Waiting Periods

Dental insurance companies may have waiting periods for services like orthodontics. I’ve found that waiting periods are often six months but some policies don’t cover braces for a year.

Cost of Braces with Dental Insurance

How much you pay for braces if you have dental insurance varies by how much the plan pays for coverage.

Most dental plans that provide braces coverage have coinsurance amounts and annual and lifetime maximum benefits. Many of these plans pay what looks to be a relatively generous 50% for orthodontic treatment, but annual and lifetime caps apply.

Let’s say the total bill for your child’s braces comes to $5,000. If your dental insurance pays 50%, you would owe $2,500.

But if the dental insurance plan also has a lifetime maximum cap for orthodontic care of $1,000, it would only pick up 50% of the bill only until reaching the $1,000 threshold. In that case, you would owe $4,000 out of the $5,000 for the braces.

What to do if Braces Are Not Covered by Your Current Insurance

If orthodontic treatment coverage is not provided by your current dental plan, consider pursuing alternative options.

Look for Another Plan

Shop around for a new dental plan through your employer or an individual plan. Just be aware that switching to a new plan may reset your required waiting period for certain types of coverage, such as basic and major care.

Work Out a Payment Arrangement with the Orthodontist

Talk to the orthodontist’s office about whether you can set up a reduced fee or if the office offers a flexible payment plan or in-house financing.

Explore External Financing

You can do this through a personal loan, home equity line of credit or credit cards. Check into braces treatment at a local dental school in your area that may charge less.

Orthodontic Insurance vs. Dental Insurance for Braces

Another option to standard dental insurance is a separate supplemental orthodontic insurance plan.

A supplemental plan is somewhat similar to traditional dental plans, but it only covers braces and orthodontic services. These plans typically have a waiting period. The coverage limits are generally 50% and a lifetime maximum benefit usually applies.

Dental Discount Plans vs. Dental Insurance for Braces

Dental discount plans are not actually insurance policies. When you sign up, the company contracts with a network of providers who consent to reduce their treatment fees, including fees for braces.

Keep in mind that not all services may be available with dental discount plans and you must use a dentist in the plan’s network to be eligible for the discount. The amount of savings you get depends on the plan, but typical discounts range from 10% to 60% for in-network services.

Best Dental Insurance for Braces Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are braces ever covered by insurance?

Yes, some dental insurance plans provide coverage for orthodontic treatment, including placement, adjusting and removal of braces as well as the cost of the hardware and retainer, X-rays and examinations.

But don’t assume that every plan includes coverage for braces. Look closely at the plan benefits, coverages, waiting periods, reimbursement caps, deductibles, limitations and exclusions before enrolling in that plan.

Does medical insurance cover braces?

Health insurance plans do not generally cover orthodontic treatment, but you may find a health plan with additional coverage. Some Affordable Care Act marketplace plans offer dental coverage and the marketplace may also offer separate dental plans.

Children 18 or younger are eligible for dental insurance on the ACA marketplace since it’s considered an essential health benefit for them in the ACA. You can get dental coverage for a child in a health insurance plan or a separate dental plan on the marketplace. But read the benefit information to see if the plan covers braces and any potential limits and waiting periods.

Does orthodontic insurance cover Invisalign?

Dental insurance companies may offer Invisalign coverage, but it varies by individual policies. Invisalign are clear aligners that are an alternative to traditional braces.

You should also remember that dental insurance companies with braces coverage don’t typically cover adults for orthodontia care.
