Parquet Flooring Sanding London

With parquet flooring, we will come and assess the floor. If it’s uneven, we will sand over it with a belt sander to make it even. Because with parquet flooring, the grain goes in different directions, we will use a trio sander to give it a nice finish and maybe a hand orbital sander to remove any scratches.

When sanding sometimes blocks can come loose. These can be rectified sometimes by gap billing with resin only. Or we may have to take them up, clean them and then re-glue them. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen until you start sanding. So that’s something that may occur. Once sanded and if gap filling is needed, this will be done and sanded with the correct grade of paper. Then we can apply the finishes that are required. Please see finishes.

We have been serving customers since 1995 in London and the Home Counties. We offer Parquet Flooring Sanding services and will come to your home or premises to do a free consultation.

What is Parquet Wood Flooring?

Parquet wood flooring is simply hardwood tiles arranged in a regular, geometric pattern. These tiles are extremely distinctive due to their small and thick structure. Typically, they have dimensions of 230mm by 70mm, and often come in blocks. As parquet wood floor tiles are made from authentic wood, they can be manufactured in a variety of wood species such as oak, mahogany and maple.

In terms of style, the herringbone and chevron patterns are the classic options to go for. The herringbone style involves positioning the hardwood tiles in a staggered zig-zag pattern. Similarly, the chevron style exhibits a zig-zag formation, however it is arranged to come to a ‘v’ shaped point.

At Floor Sanding, our experienced technicians can guide you in the process of selecting the perfect parquet wood floor design, as well as install and finish your flooring to the highest standard. If you already have parquet wood flooring, our experts can restore it back to its original lustre.

The herringbone style dates back to the Roman Empire, named after its likeness to fishbones.
The chevron style originated in the 16th century first appearing Western Europe.

Why Parquet Wood Flooring?

Advantages

your property making it a worth while investment. Another advantage is that the wood tiles can be sanded down and refinishing to restore its appearance. Due to the sturdy thick nature of the wood tiles, parquet flooring is robust and hard-wearing. Moreover, although parquet tiles are made from 100% authentic hardwood, their structure allows them to be highly resilient to heat and moisture fluctuations.

Disadvantages

Process of refinishing can be challenging as the wood grain lacks a consistent orientation. As a result, a combination of hand and machine sanding techniques are required to prevent cross-grain scratching. Another point to consider is that although highly water resistant, parquet wood flooring is not waterproof, and thus is prone to expansion and shrinkage in soaking conditions. Purchase and installation costs are also relatively higher than other types of wood flooring.

Parquet Flooring Sanding faqs

Yes, definitely. It is almost always the best choice to sand and refinish hardwood floors. This is because hardwood is so long lasting. In fact, a hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished up to ten times before it needs to be replaced.

Hardwood floors are hygienic, practical and very stylish, they do not harbour parasites as carpets do and they are virtually maintenance-free. Very easy to clean, they do not have funky odours from the previous occupants’ pets or tobacco, wood is also a great heat conductor, cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

When sanding hardwood floors the amount of wood that is removed is directly related with the coarseness of the sandpaper used. With high-level coarse sandpaper that is used by professionals, about one sixth of an inch of wood is removed.

We want your varnish to give your floors year and years of protection. We do not use any of the varnishes found in D.I.Y shops or stores. We use only high-quality professional varnish produced by Leading supplier BonakemiIt is water-based has very little odour and gives a beautiful hard-wearing finish. This varnish is sold exclusively to us direct from Bonakemi

The simple answer to that question is to decorate first. What we would ask is that the last coat of paint to go on the skirting board be applied after we have done the floor.

By the way, we also have a team of professional decorators if you would like to paint the room before sanding or installation.

Installation and Finish

Parquet oak wood flooring in the herringbone style with a beautiful, rich oil-based finish.

The first step to installing your elegant parquet flooring, is to ensure that the site is optimal. Depending on the installation method, the sub-floor needs to be levelled using concrete or plywood. It is also important to ensure the environmental conditions are suitable. We recommend maintaining temperature conditions of 16-28°C and a relative air humidity of between 40-65%. Now that the site is ready, installation can begin!

Modern parquet wood flooring is manufactured to have a click and fit system that creates a floating floor above any type of sub-floor. This process involves locking a board into its opposing board by angling it and applying a downward pressure. Alternatively, adhesive glue or nails can be used to secure the blocks onto a concrete or plywood sub-flooring. Notably, nail or glue installations are lengthy and relatively challenging – this makes it an unpopular method of installation. An area is completed by carefully fitting the parquet tiles according to the chosen pattern, ensuring the design aligns with the shape of the space.

To finish the flooring, a lacquer or oil may be used. A lacquer provides a matt coating that creates a natural and stylish appearance. Generally, lacquer finishes are more hard-wearing as they provide a high protection against damage from sunlight, as well as scuffs and scratches. Oil-based finishes, on the other hand, give a classic, high-quality appearance that is very fitting in period or traditionally designed spaces. Usually, oil-finishes provide relatively less protection and subsequently require greater maintenance to uphold its protection.

Maintenance and Cleaning

In order to uphold the luxury, authentic appearance of parquet wood flooring, adequate cleaning and maintenance is required. A general rule of thumb is to avoid excessive moisture when cleaning. Gentle brushing, hoovering and mopping is acceptable. It is advisable to use a well-drained microfibre cloth/mop to minimise water saturation. For oil-based finishes, an appropriate oil wood floor soap is required to prevent the oil coating from wearing away. Lacquered finishes, on the other hand, can be cleaned using a regular wood floor cleaning detergent.

It is recommended to provide temperature conditions of 16-28°C and a relative air humidity of between 40-65%. Moreover, it is important to protect the flooring from abrasive materials and substances e.g., scouring pads, gravel and sand. Adding felt pads on furnishings, using an external doormat and ensuring items are not dragged against the floor, are a few ways of preventing scuffs and scratches. Fortunately, good-quality parquet wood tiles can be sanded and refinished with oil or lacquer. It is important to note that sanding with machines may cause cross-grain scratching, thus hand sanding may be required.

Oiled flooring must be replenished with oil every 6-24 months to bolster the protection of the wood. In the event of staining, a touch-up oil in the appropriate colour may be used to create a seamless finish. Lacquered finishes harden over time and thus provide greater protection. As such, refinishing can be considered if and when the coating has worn off.
