  • Nationals' DJ Herz: Tagged with third loss

Herz (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Cardinals. He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Herz pitched a clean first and third inning but ran into trouble the rest of the time before getting pulled in the fifth. His rollercoaster rookie campaign continues as he's scattered impressive starts, like the two with double-digit strikeouts, with rough outings like the one on Sunday. The 23-year-old has a 5.17 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 31.1 innings this season.

  • Nationals' Zach Brzykcy: Returns to action at Double-A

Double-A Harrisburg reinstated Brzykcy (elbow) from its 60-day injured list Monday.

Brzykcy has struck out two while allowing two hits and one walk over two scoreless innings across two appearances since making his 2024 debut for Harrisburg. The 24-year-old rejoined Harrisburg after recently finishing up a six-week rehab assignment at the Nationals' lower-level affiliates while he completed his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last summer. The relief prospect has a spot on the Nationals' 40-man roster, but the organization likely isn't counting on Brzykcy making any major contributions to the big-league bullpen in 2024.

  • Nationals' Brady House: Gets bump to Triple-A

The Nationals promoted House from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.

House will get his first taste of the Triple-A level and should take over as Rochester's everyday third baseman after the Nationals called up Trey Lipscomb on Saturday to replace Nick Senzel -- who was designated for assignment -- as their primary option at the hot corner. Though the 21-year-old may not get a call to the majors before the season ends, House is likely viewed as the organization's long-term answer at third base over Lipscomb, who lacks the ideal power-hitting profile for the position. House, meanwhile, hit a modest .234 over his 306 plate appearances with Harrisburg, but he showcased plenty of pop (13 home runs, .189 ISO) while striking out at a manageable 24.5 percent clip.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Could get regular run at third base

Lipscomb will start at third base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

After being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Lipscomb will make his second straight start at third base after going 1-for-5 with a run scored in the Nationals' 14-6 win in the second game of the series with St. Louis. With Washington designating Nick Senzel for assignment Saturday, Lipscomb should have a fairly clear path to a regular role at the hot corner, if his performance warrants him sticking around as an everyday player. Over his four stints in the majors this season, Lipscomb enters Sunday's game with a collective .236/.307/.268 slash line to go with one home run and 10 stolen bases across 137 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Back in bench role

Vargas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Vargas picked up five straight starts in the infield between last Sunday and Thursday, but he benefited largely from Washington facing three left-handed pitchers over that stretch. He'll now hit the bench for the third game in a row, with right-handers taking the hill for the opposition in each of those contests.

  • Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Resting Sunday

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Ruiz will get a breather for the day game after he started behind the plate in the first two games of the series with St. Louis, going 4-for-9 with a home run, a double, a walk, four RBI and two additional runs between those contests. Riley Adams will get the nod at catcher Sunday.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Swipes bag No. 20

Young went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 14-6 win over the Cardinals.

The 24-year-old center fielder doesn't offer much with his bat while hitting at the bottom of the order for the Nationals, but Young continues to cause a nuisance when he reaches base. Through 78 big-league games this season he's slashing .261/.321/.327 with one homer, 18 RBI, 45 runs and 20 steals in 25 attempts. Washington's youth movement is in full swing, but Young isn't necessarily guaranteed to keep his spot in the starting lineup as Dylan Crews could be the next prospect the team brings up to The Show.

  • Nationals' James Wood: Launches first career homer

Wood went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI in Saturday's 14-6 rout of the Cardinals.

It was a huge day for the Nationals' young offense, and Wood was at the center of the eruption, crushing an opposite-field three-run home run off Lance Lynn in the second inning. It took the 21-year-old only six MLB games to launch his first homer, and Wood hasn't had much trouble adjusting to big-league pitching since his promotion, batting .304 (7-for-23) with a 4:6 BB:K.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Folds early against Cards

Gore came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 14-6 win over St. Louis, coughing up five runs on six hits and five walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out five.

The southpaw has shown improved control and command overall in 2024, but Gore couldn't find the plate Saturday and needed 90 pitches (52 strikes) to record 10 outs, failing to take advantage of a huge offensive outburst by the Nats. He's failed to complete six innings in four straight outings and six of seven since the beginning of June, stumbling to a 5.35 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB through 35.1 innings over that stretch. Gore will try to get back on track in his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week against the Mets.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Jettisoned by Washington

The Nationals designated Senzel for assignment Saturday.

The Nationals have decided to end the experiment with Senzel, and it looks like they will now turn third base over to Trey Lipscomb, who was recalled in a corresponding move. Senzel has struggled at the plate this season, and over his last 20 games with Washington he slashed just .147/.183/.206 with one home run, two RBI and a 22.5 percent strikeout rate across 68 at-bats. Should he clear waivers and opt for free agency, the 29-year-old should be able to latch on with a team looking for veteran infield depth.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Recalled by Washington

The Nationals recalled Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.

Lipscomb will begin his fourth stint in the majors this season, as he takes the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Nick Senzel, who was designated for assignment. After being optioned to Rochester on June 24, Lipscomb went 15-for-38 with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI. He will start at third base and bat eighth in Saturday's game against the Cardinals, per Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com.

  • Nationals' Juan Yepez: Collects hit in team debut

Yepez went 1-for-4 with a walk in Friday's extra-innings loss to the Cardinals.

Called up Thursday to replace Joey Meneses on the big-league roster, Yepez got his first start with the Nationals and banged out his first hit while starting at first base and batting seventh. The former Cardinal could get regular playing time at first base in the short term, but he'll likely get bumped to the bench or even back to the minors once Joey Gallo (hamstring) gets healthy.

  • Nationals' Lane Thomas: Nabs steal No. 20

Thomas went 2-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's extra-innings loss to the Cardinals.

The 28-year-old stole a career-high 20 bags in 157 games last season, but Thomas has massively ramped up his aggressiveness on the basepaths in 2024. Through only 59 contests, he's already matched those 20 steals in 26 attempts. He's also regaining last year's form at the plate, and over his last 15 games he's slashing .266/.329/.469 with nine of his 17 hits (six doubles, two triples and a homer) going for extra bases.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Fills stat sheet in loss

Garcia went 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in a 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Cardinals on Friday.

Garcia hit an RBI single in the first inning, a solo home run in the third and another single in the eighth. He later added another base hit and stole second in the 10th frame. The 24-year-old followed up a two-homer game July 3 with his second four-hit effort of the season. While he continues to sit against left-handed pitching, Garcia is hitting .271 with 10 homers, 42 RBI, 29 runs scored and 12 steals in a quietly productive 2024.

  • Nationals' Kyle Finnegan: Blows save Friday

Finnegan blew a save against the Cardinals on Friday, allowing two hits and one run in the ninth inning.

Finnegan was summoned to protect a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning but surrendered a solo home run to Willson Contreras. The closer had thrown five straight scoreless appearances but left a 2-2 fastball down the middle for his fourth blown save of the season. On the year, he has secured 23 saves with a 2.17 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB over 37.1 innings.
