UPDATE: The ordinance did not advance. Ald. Scott Waguespack, lead sponsor, said he would work with parties on a compromise. 

A joint meeting of the Chicago City Council’s Finance and Public Safety committees will reconvene May 24 to consider an ordinance concerning public access to completed police misconduct investigations. The Better Government Association gave its unqualified support to a previous version of the ordinance in April, but strongly opposes a revised measure supported by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The new version essentially guts the previous ordinance and would provide little meaningful access to these public records. 

BGA Director of Policy Marie C. Dillon submitted written comments and called on aldermen to vote “no” on the proposal.  Her statement is shared below.
