Jedha. The worn streets of this ancient world serve as a confluence for the galaxy. Visited by all, yet owned by none. Here, the Jedi are but one creed among many worshipping and studying the Force. From the Guardians of the Whills to the Path of the Open Hand, countless beings come to learn, and to share, in peace.
 
As all of Jedha prepares for its Festival of Balance, the galaxy still reels from the violence on Eiram and E’ronoh. But after foiling a plot to escalate the war between the two planets, the Jedi believe that a lasting peace may be within reach. Master Creighton Sun and Jedi Knight Aida Forte arrive on Jedha with delegations from both planets to formally end the “Forever War.” The Jedi hope that the harmony of Jedha’s many factions, along with the signing of a peace treaty, will create a symbol to the rest of the galaxy of what can be accomplished through unity.
 
But not all are happy with the Jedi’s involvement or ready to concern themselves with peace. Rumors begin to swirl that the Jedi bring war in their wake. The distrust and anger that for so long fueled the Forever War now threaten to corrupt the communities of Jedha. SCENE 1. INT. JEDHA—THE SECOND SPIRE—MEETING CHAMBER

ANNOUNCER:

Time until the battle begins: zero hours.

ATMOS: We’re in the Second Spire on Jedha, an old, previously abandoned temple that has been recently refitted for the peace conference. We’re in a large meeting chamber on the lower level of the spire. A small group of people have gathered, but the mood is subdued as everyone waits for proceedings to begin.

From outside, we can hear the general murmur of distant crowds. As the scene progresses, however, the sounds of angry people should grow louder in the background, as a riot is heading this way . . . ​

FX: Tilson Graf, the serving mediator, is rapping his fingertips nervously on the pedestal before him.

TILSON GRAF:

(NERVOUS)

Right, then.

It’s almost time to begin.

AMBASSADOR TINTAK:

Indeed. Let’s get it over with. I’m eager to return to E’ronoh to help with the reconstruction efforts, just as, I’m sure, Ambassador Cerox wishes to return to her people on Eiram.

TILSON GRAF:

(HESITANT)

Yes, Ambassador Tintak. If you could just give me a moment . . . ​

CREIGHTON SUN:

Is everything all right, Mediator Graf?

TILSON GRAF:

(DISTRACTED)

What? Yes, yes. Of course, Master Sun.

(PULLING HIMSELF TOGETHER)

Everything’s fine. I just need a minute to compose myself. This is, after all, a momentous affair. The signing of this peace treaty is a key moment in galactic history. Eiram and E’ronoh have been at war for over five years. And now, following the marriage of their heirs, the worlds have finally come together in peace. We’re gathered here in the Second Spire on historic Jedha to—

AMBASSADOR CEROX:

(INTERRUPTING)

Mediator Graf?

TILSON GRAF:

(PUT OUT)

Yes, Ambassador Cerox?

AMBASSADOR CEROX:

(IMPATIENT)

With the greatest respect, we are all aware of the reasons why we’re here. Please, get on with it before—

FX: Ambassador Cerox is drowned out by the sudden, surging sounds of the riot just outside the building.

AMBASSADOR TINTAK:

(ANGRY, BARKING FRUSTRATION)

Oh, what now?

TILSON GRAF:

Umm . . . ​

CREIGHTON:

Aida. What’s going on outside?

AIDA FORTE:

There’s a crowd of people approaching the spire, Creighton. They’re . . . ​

FX: A thrown rock puts out a window. The bellowing from outside grows louder. The crowd is angry.

AIDA:

(SHOCKED)

It’s a riot!

CREIGHTON:

(WORRIED)

Get back, everyone. Away from the windows.

FX: A lightbow fires, somewhere else in the building.

MUFFLED SHOUT:

(FROM “OFF-SCREEN”)

Stay back! All of you!

FX: More banging and clanging. The riot is spilling into the building close by. A door bursts open into the meeting chamber. It’s Mesook, a Guardian of the Whills.

MESOOK:

(DESPERATE)

It’s the civilians. They’re rioting. They’re swarming the building. We can’t hold them back without a massacre.

FX: There are sounds of brutal close-quarter fighting from behind him. The Guardians aren’t firing on the civilians unless they must.

TILSON GRAF:

(QUIETLY, AS HE RETREATS)

I . . . ​ummm . . . ​I think we’d better make for safety.

CREIGHTON:

(COMMANDING)

Ambassadors, to me.

FX: There’s a massive crash as a speeder bike bursts through the plate-glass window, splintering shards everywhere. A man screams in pain as he’s speared and killed by a ragged shard.

CREIGHTON:

Get down!

CUT TO:

Part One

Pilgrim

ANNOUNCER:

After years of bitter conflict, the planets Eiram and E’ronoh have at last settled on a tentative peace, with the help of the Jedi and Republic Co-Chancellor Orlen Mollo. While the repercussions of their war still ripple through the Outer Rim—leading to spiraling food and fuel shortages—delegates from the two worlds have agreed to reconvene in neutral territory to finalize a treaty that will see an end to the war.

Now Jedi Master CREIGHTON SUN and Jedi Knight AIDA FORTE have accompanied delegations from the two warring planets to the holy world of JEDHA, where they plan to oversee the signing of the treaty amidst preparations for the grand Festival of Balance being held by the city’s new Force Convocation.

But not everyone on Jedha is ready to welcome the Jedi and their charges, or to concern themselves with matters of peace. . . . ​


SCENE 2. INT. THE SECOND SPIRE—ANTEROOM—DAY

ANNOUNCER:

Time until the battle begins: seventy-two hours.

ATMOS: We’re in an anteroom in the Second Spire attached to where the Jedi are staying. We can hear the gentle murmur of the city from outside. In the distance is the soft ringing of bells.

CREIGHTON:

I never thought I’d see the day when military transports hung in the skies over Jedha. It seems . . . ​

(SIGHS)

Well, it feels wrong.

All the work we’ve done. All the efforts Princess Xiri and Prince Phan-tu have made toward peace . . . ​and their worlds still send military ships to the signing of a treaty.

FX: There’s no reply. The moment stretches, and then:

CREIGHTON:

Aida?

FX: Jedi Knight Aida Forte walks over to join him by the window. She pauses for a moment while she takes in the sight.

AIDA:

War casts a long shadow, Master Sun. Perhaps, after all this time, the people of Eiram and E’ronoh are finding it hard to trust one another.

CREIGHTON:

I suppose it’s to be expected. The old royals were mired in hatred for so many years before the war, their trust for one another is tenuous at best.

AIDA:

Particularly as Queen Adrialla was found to be manufacturing poisoned weapons even after the cease-fire had been called.

CREIGHTON:

And despite the fact such weapons have been destroyed and the war is officially at an end, they still insist on sending military escorts to Jedha. Their minds and hearts remain gripped by fear and loss.

Thank the Light for the new generation and the hope they bring.

AIDA:

The heirs are the future, Creighton. Xiri and Phan-tu will unite their people, given time. The horrors of the past will be forgiven, if not forgotten. And people will look back at their union as the turning point. The moment that peace finally won out over war.

CREIGHTON:

(THOUGHTFUL)

You’re right. We’re so close.

No more needless death. No more hatred. The new generation will lead the old toward a better future. I truly believe that.

FX: Somewhere outside, we hear a commotion—the distant sound of raised voices, too far away to make out what’s being said, but it sounds like a fractious argument between several people or groups.

CREIGHTON:

But seeing those ships up there . . . ​I worry what message it sends.

AIDA:

To whom?

CREIGHTON:

The locals. The pilgrims. This new “Convocation of the Force.”

What if they think we’ve brought the conflict to their door?

AIDA:

The conflict’s over. Everyone knows that. The cease-fire has held for over a month. This is a celebration of peace.

The transport ships are nothing but posturing. A last show of pomp before the treaty is finalized and all those military commanders are out of a job.

CREIGHTON:

Yes, you’re right.

AIDA:

Soon the chancellors will arrive, and the treaty can be written into law.

CREIGHTON:

Ah, about that. I received a transmission from Chancellor Mollo just before we arrived. It seems that, despite both his and Chancellor Greylark’s insistence, Republic security have put their foot down. Chancellor Mollo is to remain with Xiri and Phan-tu, to help them oversee the rebuilding of their worlds, while Chancellor Greylark returns to Coruscant.

AIDA:

So who will serve as mediator to oversee the signing of the treaty?

CREIGHTON:

Morton San Tekka.

AIDA:

(SURPRISED)

A San Tekka?

CREIGHTON:

You know Chancellor Mollo. He’s a politician through and through. A chancellor of the people. He thought it best to appoint someone with connections to the frontier, rather than another elected official. Since Eiram and E’ronoh aren’t part of the Republic he wants to tread carefully, so it doesn’t appear that the Republic are overstepping in their role as neutral advisors. I gather that Chairperson Meldan, the head of the committee that oversees Republic affairs on Jedha, is a little put out at being overlooked, but Chancellor Mollo’s decision does make sense. This way, the Republic won’t be seen to be unduly interfering in the business of non-member worlds.

The High Republic has been on a real upswing lately. I've enjoyed every book produced in the beginning of Phase II. "The Battle of Jedha" combines the overall stories of the previous YA, adult, and Middle Grade novels and makes one giant crossover event!

The problem of an Audio drama (or a Script in this case) is that it can often feel too short and be missing too much meat of the story. "Dooku: Jedi Lost" suffered this a little bit, and "Doctor Aphra" suffered this a lot. "Tempest Runner", the only other Audio Drama/Script in the High Republic was able to tell a full and complete story without being too long. However, that felt more like a niche story that wasn't required reading for the HR. I would absolutely say that the Battle of Jedha is required reading if you are at all into the High Republic.

There is a substantial cast in this book. However, I thought that George Mann was able to effectively keep them from feeling the same. There is also an element of mystery in the book that keeps the reader interested. It's not the most well produced or sophisticated mystery, but it is entertaining!

Some characters really stood out to me, particularly Silandra Sho and Creighton Sun. They were unique and served as the primary POV characters to drive the story forward. Several minor characters were great, especially some characters from other HR novels. Keth Cerapath and Silandra Sho probably go through the most complex journey characterwise, but all of the characters have great moments of growth and learning.

This book does set things forward, but the next adult novel "Cataclysm" needs to propel this story forward, otherwise this book and future books will feel for naught.

There are some set ups for the future, but mostly this book is about the epic showdown on Jedha. Almost the entire book takes place there. I like the atmosphere it produced, but would have been interested in going outside the main city and into the wild, but it was still entertaining!

Overall, this is a well produced and right length audio drama (script) and the story was engaging and fun. Hope to see more from George Mann and more Scripts in the future...just release them on the same day next time please! 9.0 out of 10!

I actually didn't know this book was a script of an audiobook until after I bought it. Took me a little while to get used to the format, but the book was very enjoyable and the script and dialogue were well written, so I had no problem adjusting. There was a nice mix of familiar and new characters and the script left me looking forward to what comes next in Phase 2!

The High Republic is an uneven series, some books are better than others. George Mann is, along with Cavan Scott, is one of the best authors who are good at telling stories. This is a good one. If you are new to this series, this is phase II of the High Republic. You should read Path of Deceit and Convergence before this work and Cataclysm and Path of Vengeance afterwards. A peace conference on the moon of Jedha becomes a battle of survival with shocking revelations.

Note: This is a script to a full cast audio drama. While you can read it on your own, it works much better to follow along while you listen. The full cast is fabulous and the drama includes music and sound effects, along with performances by some of the best Star Wars voice talent. I had no trouble following along with a copy on my phone, while I listened at work. I hope there will be more full cast audio dramas produced for Star Wars to accompany Dr. Aphra, Dooku: Jedi Lost, Tempest Runner and this book. Very entertaining.

This is now the second book in the Star Wars canon, both in the High Republic era and overall (at least for the moment). It is set on the Jedha, which is the moon that was introduced during Rouge One. This book is another one of what has become fairly common for the adult canon books being released, in that it is written as a script. It follows the events of the novel Convergence, and the battle between the planets Eiram and E'ronoh depicted in that book. Jedha is preparing for a Festival of Balance in which different groups worshiping and/or studying The Force, including the Guardians of the Whills, are included. The festival will be used as a backdrop to peace negotiations between the Eiram and the E'ronoh, to be aided by two Jedi Masters.

The book introduces even more characters (at least if you read this before Convergence as I did) and still does not utilize Yoda (which has been my big issue with all of the High Republic books to this point), just casually mentioning him at the very end. The book is one of the longer ones at just under 500 pages, but it is a fairly quick read. If you are a fast reader it can easily be finished in a couple of days. I think the story is good, but not great. It is not one of the canon books I would classify as a must-read, but I do think it is worth reading at least once for those who are keeping up with the stories outside of the movies and tv series.

I've been waiting for this book since I first saw Rogue One on theaters back on 2016! What a well balanced, attention grabibing, emotion provoking story! I was simply in awe from the first chapter(wich wasn't really the first but who read it know what I mean)! I'm feeling so rewarded for this chapter in the so wide hall of stories the EU has to offer us . My thanks to George Mann to bring us such a dense and epic story! As I said in the title of this commentary the beginning about Rogue One; since I first saw that movie I always wondered about the infinte possibilties of stories that could take place on The Holy City; how that Jedi Statue(now we got a name for it! The Protector! And what a fitting name! The events that leads to its fall in the book are simply epicly devastating!) felled, the people, factions, events that led to such a monument to crumble is told here in an epic way by Mann! What a guy!
I think this has become one of my favorite stories of all from the EU! But my thanks go also to Gareth Edwards and whoever else was behind Rogue One and the conception of Jedha because without them, this book wouldn't have existed.

I’m loving this 2nd phase of the High Republic! This book is different as it is written as a script, which at first I thought it was weird and that I wouldn’t enjoy the reading but I was so wrong! It has lots of action and is a must read if you read Convergence and wants to read Cataclysm. Definitely recommend!

This is a great book. It really ties up the Phase II book, junior novels, and comics. I was really happy to see some of my favourite characters from these books return. One as a cameo, and three as the main characters.

The holy city of Jadha is home to a number of different sects and religions devoted to The Force. However, recently, there has been more distension than unity between. The loudest is the anti-Jedi sentiment.

Because of its standing and it being natural ground, it seems like a perfect place to sign the peace treaty between the formerly waring planets of Eitam and E'ronoh. However, not everyone wants peace. A number of people and sects have their own motives, and nobody is safe. Be prepared for all-out war.

This one of the first books since Disney took over that I really saw the Jedi as the awesome warriors I grew up reading during the extended universe. I have found the Disney Jedi to be a lot weaker than the Extended Universe counterparts.

Another thing I really like about this book is that it shows exactly how brutal war and the cost to people caught in the crossfire.

I am glad that the Jedi are starting to peice the clues together, and we might get the origins of creature unleashed in Phase I. I love the continuity between all the different media. I can't wait to see what happens next.
