PRAISE FOR THE HIGH REPUBLIC

Intertwining themes of environmental disaster, the detrimental impacts of capitalism, and what it means to be a monster play a significant role in the conflict. Sweeping action sequences, well-timed shifts among different points of view, and a touch of levity from bantering droids all add to the story’s appeal. A high-stakes, coming-of-age adventure with relevant real-world themes.―

A fun adventure more along the vein of “Star Trek” with “Star Wars” elements as characters explore (strange) new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no Jedi has gone before.

Set 150 years before “Light of the Jedi,” this book tackles themes of greed, betrayal, and loss that will resonate both with middle-grade and adult readers. I liked the characters and the mystery behind it. The concept of Pathfinders and Prospectors seeking new hyperspaces lanes was compelling. But again, these concepts are very “Star Trek-y.” The pace was good and the plot interesting. It was a quick, enjoyable read.

I followed the reading guide and read this before “Star Wars: Convergence,” but apparently the last chapter includes a major spoiler for “Convergence” (I’m pretty sure I can guess what that is). Thus, readers be warned.

Quest for the Hidden City is a junior novel set during the early High Republic (which is the second phase of the High Republic era novels) set between the "main"/adult novels Convergence and The Battle of Jedha. The main character of this book is Silandra Sho, who along with her Padawan, Rooper, responds to a distress signal from Jedi Master Rok Buran, whose pathfinder team was attacked on a strange remote planet called Aubadas.

The book is just under 300 pages, and like the other junior novels, is written well enough for adults to enjoy. This is most definitely a side story that is not really tied into the larger main story of the early High Republic novels. It reads fairly quickly and is something that most adults will likely be able to read in a day or two. I would not call it one of the must-read books, but it is enjoyable if you decide to read it.

What a great read. It was geared toward younger readers, but written intelligently and skillfully.

George Mann is a favorite author of mine and he didn’t disappoint in this book.

It proves that Star Wars has many rich and meaningful characters and can tell fantastic stories that don’t include the Skywalker family.

He’s set the bar high for future books in this series.

Highly recommend.

From Phase 2 of the High Republic (set 150 years before Phase 1) we find the Republic sending Pathfinder teams of technicians and Jedi to make contact with worlds and find hyperspace routes. Naturally, danger abounds. In this case a desolate world of abandoned ruins and rumors of monsters. Some interesting Star Wars lore is hampered by the slight characters. Since another Junior High Republic book gave me a great character in Vernestra Rwoh I know it can be done. Here there is not much to remember other than some exciting adventure scenes. Hopefully they get expanded on in future High Republic books.
Recommended for Star Wars fans.

*ARC reader - thanks Disney Books!*

From my review for Dork Side of the Force:

A wrecked droid floating in space. A missing Pathfinder team. A mysterious world haunted by mythic monsters. Those are the key elements of Star Wars: Quest for the Hidden City, the next middle-grade novel in The High Republic’s second phase of storytelling.

Arriving on Nov. 1, it’s the perfect quick Star Wars read to keep the spooky season going. But at its core, Quest for the Hidden City by George Mann is about teamwork, community, and keeping hope through immense hardship — all told through the eyes of young people.

This Star Wars story is also good old-fashioned fun. Its pacing and action-packed adventure make it a breeze to fly through the book’s 240 pages. And it feels very much like a George Mann story — packed with intriguing lore like his in-universe Myths & Fables books.

What Quest for the Hidden City does the best is encapsulate the key elements of The High Republic’s era of exploration. In this book, we get a better read on what makes the Pathfinding teams tick, how previously uncontacted worlds feel about the Jedi, and the possibility of joining the Republic.

Quest for the Hidden City also pushes the boundaries of what’s normally considered a middle-grade or junior novel, but in the best way. This book would be perfect for Goosebumps or scary movie-loving kids, as it leans farther into more horror elements than previous middle-grade Star Wars books.

And while the middle-grade novels aren’t essential to understanding the larger arc of The High Republic, it would be a shame to skip these rich, loveable character-filled stories.

Mann has created one of the best books for younger readers of The High Republic. And I can’t wait to see Dass, Rooper, and Silandra again, as well as more George Mann-crafted Star Wars horror.

The High Republic phase 2 isn't effing around. If they don't kill anyone in a book, then they will have plenty of characters dead via backstory. I think this was the book that made me realize that THR is kind of a Star Wars take on Star Trek. And man oh man would I watch the heck out of a long form wandering around the universe Star Wars.

Anyways, book good as always.

A very good book, this book runs alongside Convergence in another part of the frontier. Great new characters. One of the things I liked was having the Jedi in action as well as using their lightsabers as a weapon and delivering the killing stroke.

While the Forever War is still going on other planets on the frontier have their own problem and some of them want/need the Republic's help. However, when the Republic finds answers they might not like what was found.

A very good continuation of Phase 2 (set before Phase 1), of the High Republic books. Again great new characters, a bit of a slow start to the book, but an action-packed end to the book. I look to seeing what is next for these characters and High Republic in general.
