Centuries before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, in the era of the glorious High Republic, the Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy!

After a series of staggering losses, the Republic seems to finally have the villainous Nihil marauders on the run, and it looks like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Until word comes of a suspected Nihil attack on the industrial cosmopolitan world of Corellia, right in the Galactic Core.

Sent to investigate are Jedi Masters Cohmac Vitus and Kantam Sy, along with Padawans Reath Silas and Ram Jomaram, all fighting their own private battles after months of unrelenting danger. On Corellia, Reath and Ram encounter a brazen young security specialist named Crash, whose friend was one of the victims of the Nihil attack, and they team up with her to infiltrate Corellia’s elite while the Masters pursue more diplomatic avenues. But going undercover with Crash is more dangerous than anyone expected, even as Ram pulls in his friend Zeen to help with an elaborate ruse involving a galactic pop star.

But what they uncover on Corellia turns out to be just one part of a greater plan, one that could lead the Jedi to their most stunning defeat yet….

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Reath Silas has come a long way from the aspiring scholar readers met on Coruscant, having lost mentors and friends in the fight against the Nihil raiders who dominate the Outer Rim. Older dives into Jedi ideology, the Light, and PTSD as many characters try to reconcile the calm of Starlight Beacon with the violence of the galaxy and find balance in the Force. When the elite of the planet Corellia begin to disappear, the Jedi are sent to investigate a possible Nihil operation in the heart of the Republic. Older juggles a large cast of familiar characters and subplots-some more successfully than others-to create one of the more contained installments to the expansive series. Satisfying 2nd Half Makes Up for Tedious 1st Half
This is the first sub-par release of the “The High Republic” and it’s due to the first half of the book spending way too much time on the non-Jedi Corellian characters that are simply not particularly interesting and often feel out of place in the STAR WARS world. At times, I felt as if the author was describing modern-day Hollywood and not a city or characters in a galaxy far, far away. However, once the bad guys show up in the second half (Part 4), the pacing picks up substantially, the Jedi characters—including the delightful Ram Jamoram [ignore the marketing!]—take center stage, and I enjoyed the book from that point on.

Midnight Horizon closes this chapter of the High Republic phase 1 novels beautifully and memorably. This novel revisits characters we are already familiar with yet Older brings even more to the table expanding upon these characters stories, history, and most of all deepens these characters connections to each other and their audience. Older is also able to introduce a cast of brand new characters and seamlessly integrate them into the universe and the plot, while allowing the audience to care about them just as much as the already familiar characters.

Midnight Horizon picks up where we left off with these characters and as a comic reader I personally love that characters from the comics are introduced into a novel format which really allows to expand upon them, giving the audience much more time with characters such as Lula and Zeen, something that can often be limiting in a comic/graphic novel format. The plot is definitely a slow burn with a very satisfying and thrilling climax. There was a particular storyline with a character in this novel that revisits an age old conversation within the Star Wars fandom and provides more context to the inner workings and complicated history of the Jedi Order that deepens the impact of actions and events of stories much later in the timeline. The story is also able to wrap up nicely while leaving the audience wanting (and patiently waiting) to see these characters again.

From reading Older's other published works, particularly those that exist within the star wars universe he has a very distinct style that works very well with the cast of characters and is really able to capture the individual personalities of characters while keeping a memorable tone within the narration of the entire story. Older is able to capture intense and amazing moments throughout the story that I found myself quite emotional multiple times, both happy and sad tears were shed.

Above all my absolute favorite aspect of Midnight Horizon was the incredible inclusion of characters belonging to the LGBTQA+ community. These characters are well rounded and their stories are relatable, creating a more inclusive space in the Star Wars universe for the audience while also making the universe with such a wide variety of species and planets much more authentic.

Midnight Horizon dives deep into intense and mature themes that is both palatable and digestible for its target audience. However don't let the YA label stop you from reading this novel, I highly recommend it to anyone.

Although this novel was a slow burn, the final half was an absolute nail biter of a thrilling adventure. I write this with tears still streaming down my face as I contemplate what just happened. Out of all the “High Republic” novels, this was by far the most character driven and Daniel José Older must be commended for their superb and spellbinding prose. I wish there were more.

Overall I really enjoyed midnight horizon just like I have been enjoying the rest of the high Republic series. I read this book within a week which is really saying something about the quality of the work because I am an impressively slow reader. You may be asking, if you like the book so much why did you give it four stars? The only reason I gave it four stars was because of the overuse of both “!” And “…”. Like I understand it’s supposed to give a sentence a little flare but it was used so much throughout the book that it literally became a distraction. Other than this very minor nitpick, great book!

The book wraps up Phase 1 of the High Republic with a bang (literally). The Jedi are pushed to their limit in this story taking you to the homeworld of Han Solo in a very different and mystic era of the Star Wars Universe.

This was the last major book in the phase one of the High Republic series. This is a YA entry, as most of the content in this series is aimed at younger audiences. For me this book had too many characters to keep track of and felt like a Saturday morning cartoon. The younger characters kept acting and talking like they were on Tik Tok or Snapchat. The legends books did a much better job of making you feel like you were in a different universe and that included speech. Half of this book was silly situations, especially about the popular performers. The legends book Shadow Games handled this much better, showing what a popular performer did and the perils she experienced. It also introduced the fun Dash Rendar, who traded witty exchanges with Han Solo. The bodyguard business was confusing as well. I haven't read the comics most of the young characters came from and I wasn't really interested in them. The two characters from other main novels, Cohmac and Reath Silas were inconsistent as unfortunately been the norm with different authors writing them. It was hard for me to believe this was the same character from Into the Dark. It finally came to a head at the end of the book. I had read the other canon novel Older had written, Last Shot, and it was inconsistent as well. This was better than the Fallen Star since it did do a better job of giving a sense of the location. The audio book was actually good for a Disney Press version, they finally understood that the YA books should have the same quality as the adult Random House Audio books and unfortunately, Marc Thompson can't do them all. Todd did a great job of narration and character voices.
The High Republic for me has generally been a disappointment, with the exception of the Rising Storm, which was the best book in the series. Since Timothy Zahn finished his Thrawn trilogy, we will not have any good adult novels. I am glad that some of the legends books are finally being given unabridged audio books and I will look forward to those. We won't be seeing novels of the caliber of Darth Plageius or the Heir to the Empire series and that is a shame for the adult audience.

From the moment I picked up the book until it was completed, I was captivated by the story. While some books have a simple plot with a few twists and turns, the Midnight Horizon expounds upon multiple storylines with many twists and turns. I was drawn into the story of about a dozen different characters and hoped for their best. This is about my 25th Star Wars book to read, and it is one my favorites. I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars The PERFECT Ending for an AVERAGE Trilogy
Reviewed in Canada on March 25, 2023
Story starts and ends well with an exciting and well-paced plot, with the middle feeling dreadfully slow at times. Established characters are well-represented (Reath and Cohmac) and new character Ram has a great arc. Romance is, once again in this trilogy, quite prominent. However, it's lesbian and gender neutral lovers (no traditional relationships to be found) so if that's your thing, you're well-off.
After how much High Republic I've read, I should be more invested in this universe, but I'm just not (maybe it's the young adult genre dampening things)? Overall, this trilogy is decent, but only one I'd recommend to REALLY die-hard fans. To this end, Midnight Horizon is a perfect ending
