Great book for a young Star Wars reader
I normally don’t read middle grade books but I have been keeping up with all The High Republic stories and so I did read A Test of Courage and enjoyed it enough to make me want to get this one as well.I have heard this book is more enjoyable if you are familiar with the High Republic Adventure comics which unfortunately, I have not read yet, but I still enjoyed the story. I did finish The Rising Storm by Cavan Scott before starting this one as I knew they would both be connected and contain spoilers for the other. Much like The Rising Storm this book is pretty fast paced. We are introduced to a character named Ram Jomaram and he is a Jedi padawan from the planet Valo where the Republic Fair is being held and later attacked. The character has a droid companion called V-18. The relationship between Ram and his droid is very funny at times and especially when they get into trouble the dialogue between the two is very entertaining. I can’t imagine a kid grabbing this book and not have fun reading it.I was also very surprised at how much this book is connected to The Rising Storm, the adult novel. I expected the book to have some characters be referenced, but I didn’t expect them to make appearances throughout the book like they did.I did find the ending confrontation between the kids and the Drengir to be a bit silly but that is most likely because the book was written for a younger audience. I will say I believe this book was written for an even younger audience than A Test of Courage. Daniel does explore some pretty interesting themes in this book that I think a young audience can comprehend and come out at the other end feeling like they learned something. DJO has a very funny way of writing his books and I think that suits the middle grade books very well. He spells names differently often which is actually done often in a lot of Star Wars books. The only reason I bring this up is because I have seen some complaints of his book “Last Shot” that point this out. I have read plenty of SW books to know names, especially droid names are often spelled differently throughout the book by many authors including some of the most famous like Timothy Zahn.Overall, great book and I would definitely recommend it if you want to pick it up for a younger family member or if you just want to read everything High Republic.

This, like the other junior novels, is an ancillary story to the adult high-republic novels. Meaning, it fills in some of the details of the larger story. This one is set on Valo during the Nihil attack on the Republic fair that is detailed in the novel, "The Rising Storm". It is told from the perspective of two Padawans, one named Ram, and another named Lula. They get stuck in the middle of the Nihil attack and help get the word out to the Republic that reinforcements are needed. Vernestra Rawoh also appears in the novel, and Yoda is again name-dropped but does not appear directly.

Like the other junior novels, this one is short, just under 200 pages. If you read relatively quickly this can easily be finished in a day or two. Even though it is tailored more to kids, I think it is written well enough for adults to enjoy. But, it can get a little silly (mainly some of the stuff involving Ram's droid) at times. I would not call it a must-read, but if you are, like me, an adult who collects all of the canon books, it is worth reading once.

All padawan Ram Jomaram wants is to work on his tech...hang with his droid...and hopefully become a full Jedi...someday. His life was quiet and he liked it that way...he thought! That was, until the day that quiet was ended by an enemy thought to have been scattered into the depths of the galaxy. Now that same enemy has returned with an even more terrible ally and Ram's life will change forever. But he won't need to fight alone as others he never knew existed join him to save his world.

The High Republic story line is the latest story arc in the Star Wars Universe. Taking place before the Phantom Menace the story's deal with a time of the Jedi's strength and the rise of the Empire. Author Daniel Jose Older is one of the architects of the STAR WARS: HIGH REPUBLIC timeline and stories and currently writes the HIGH REUBLIC ADVENTURES comic series as well as other entries in the STAR WARS entirety. Older as one of the founders of the series has, as would be expected, a great grasp on the characters and the period of time in the SW universe that the stories take place in. His young characters of Ram, Lulu, and Zeen are what the creation of Padawans in the SW Saga were meant to be. Independent, smart, resourceful, with a touch of youthful angst, Older gives you the best of the new...or the old depending on your frame of reference.

With many more adventures to come the HIGH REPUBLIC is here to stay.

After reading Last Shot from Older, I was so excited to see him back in the Star Wars Universe! Race to Crashpoint Tower takes place on the planet Valo, where two padawans must fix the comms tower before the Nhial destroy the peace and joy the Republic has built. By far, the best part about this book is it’s characters; full of personality and dimensions, these are the types of Jedi I have been dying to see! And it makes me want to go back and pick up the High Republic Adventures comic so I can see where some of them got their start (but you can definitely start here!)

I do wish we could have gotten more time with a few characters, as the book was mostly action heavy, and I do think it might be better to read this after The Rising Storm if you are planning to read both. But overall, I absolutely adored this and can’t wait to see the adventure continue! 4.5/5

I just recomend you to read the High Republic Adventure before getting into this one, as some characters of those comics pop on this book.

I enjoyed this book much more that I though I would. This book is a great companion to the Rising Storm. Apart from returning characters for A Test of Courage it also introduces other characters.

For a continuity lover life me I really like how this book flows perfectly into The Rising Storm. The other thing I like about the book and thus series is that they show others force users and the Jedi way is not the only way.

The Republic Fair attact was a huge battle it is great that this books concentrates on some of the battles that the main book did not. Itvus great idea for Older to use his characters from Star Wars the High Republic Adventures here. I will definitely be getting that series next.
