Survivor's Quest: Star Wars Legends (Star Wars - Legends) Kindle Edition

The specter of the menacing Grand Admiral Thrawn looms over Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker as they embark on a journey to recover an important piece of Jedi history.

Sometimes it seems a Jedi’s work is never done, and Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker know this only too well. Despite the bond they share in the Force, the Jedi Master and his wife are still learning the ropes of being a couple after three years of marriage—and struggling to find time together between the constant demands of duty. But all that will change when they’re united on an unexpected mission: They must pool their exceptional skills to combat an insidious enemy and salvage a part of Jedi history.

Whatever may await, the Skywalkers will not face it alone. Joining them on the strange and solemn journey are an officer of the post-Palpatine Empire escorted by a detachment of Imperial stormtroopers; a party of diplomats from a gentle alien species that reveres the fallen Jedi for saving them from bloodthirsty conquerors; and a New Republic ambassador who harbors his own mysterious agenda.

Soon enough, suspicion, secrecy, and an unknown saboteur run rampant aboard the isolated ship. But the gravest danger lies within the derelict walls of Outbound Flight, buried for half a century on a desolate planetoid. As the marooned hulk yields up stunning revelations and unexpected terrors to its visitors, Luke and Mara find all that they stand for—and their very existence—brutally challenged. The ultimate test will be surviving the deathtrap carefully laid by foes who are legendary for their ruthlessness, and determined to complete the job Thrawn began: exterminating the Jedi.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Hugo winner Zahn, author of five previous Star Wars novels (Heir to the Empire, etc.), serves up another G-rated crowd-pleaser in the bestselling franchise series. Regulars will recognize the cast, but newcomers may raise an eyebrow to learn that Luke Skywalker, whom they lovingly left as a youth on a screen in a galaxy far away, is now a married man. His wife, Mara Jade, is, however, no simple suburbanite clutching little Skywalkers. Having spent her early years innocently supporting a dictator, she now flies beside her husband, content to swap technological chitchat instead of romantic twaddle. She is, after all, a Jedi Knight, the equal of her Master Jedi husband and just as handy at wielding a blazing light saber. The alien Chiss, inadvertently or otherwise, have shot down Outbound Flight, the fabulous lost group of super dreadnoughts bearing more than 50,000 people into the most distant reaches of space, a scenario reminiscent of Robert A. Heinlein's classic Universe, if without the cosmological wonder. Now, half a century later, many species have assembled to locate the wreckage. To their surprise, when they discover the remains, survivors uninterested in being saved inhabit them. To no one's surprise, Luke and Mara are up to the situation's needs. Full of action and more twists than a corkscrew, this stand-alone SF adventure novel is sure to satisfy its target teen audience.

From Booklist

Here again we have Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade, the married Jedi, whose quest this time is for remnants of the Outward Bound expedition, launched 50 years before by the Old Republic and subsequently destroyed by pirates, with the help of the late Admiral Thrawn. Of course, the New Republic wants Luke and Mara to represent it on this outing, and Thrawn's people, the Chiss, want in, too. Moreover, half a dozen other individuals, factions, and polities all have personal or political reasons for finding the remains of the Outward Bounders. So already the situation is complicated, and the fact that, except for Luke and Mara, nobody is what they seem, and that some of the agendas they're hiding in dusty storage compartments and computer files are flat-out lethal, adds more complications. Everything gets rapidly worse when it turns out that there are survivors on derelict Outward Bound ships, and they are tough, determined, and totally hostile to the Jedi Knights and everything they ever did on behalf of the Old Republic. Finally, one of the not-what-they-seems reveals itself, teeing off half-a-novel's worth of fast, furious, detailed, and intelligent action, clearly setting up another book; and, oh yes, also developing Luke and Mara's relationship. Not for beginners with Star Wars fiction, perhaps, but in the hands of tie-in Master Zahn, a thoroughly absorbing story for the seasoned reader. Roland Green

Timothy Zahn definately knows how to write the SW characters, after reading "Outbound Flight", I was eager for more, I am not a fan of post-"Return of the Jedi" books simply because the ones I have tried to read always seem to portray Luke as a character unsure of himself, after the events of "Jedi" that shouldn't be the case, luckily Zahn makes Luke a strong character here which I liked, his portrayal of Luke is exactly how I would picture the character being like, In this one 50 years have passed since "Outbound Flight" was attacked & her fate left unknown, Luke is now a Jedi Master & has full confidence, there are moments where Luke questions whether or not he has lived up to what Yoda might have wanted him to become, but for the most part & I like how Luke is written here, he is now married to former imperial agent Mara Jade who once again is brought to life by Zahn, she has definately become my favorite non-movie character, there is a unique chemistry between her & Luke, as they are informed by the Chiss that "Outbound Flight" has been found & can possibly be salvaged, Luke & Mara board a Chiss vessel, the Chiss have since expressed regret for Thrawn's actions 50 years earlier & are willing to assist in the recovery effort, but there are others who are interested as well such as Jedi Lorana Jizler's brother, who never made amends with his sister, a former imperial officer accompanied by three Stormtroopers & some aliens with a secret agenda, the first few chapters deal with these characters & some crazy events aboard the Chiss vessel, but once they arrive at the wreckage, the action really starts as they discover survivor's among what is left of "Outbound Flight" & the aliens secret agenda is revealed, there isn't much I can say that others haven't already said, but this is a great follow-up to "Outbound Flight", that last few chapters are intense that see Luke & Mara trying to defeat a ancient Trade Federation Destroyer Droid that becomes difficult to defeat & quite a task as they start running out of options, their battle with this droid is quite similar to Qiu-Gon & Obi-Wan's battle seen at the beginning of the "Phantom Menace" but much more intense & would really look good on screen, they do defeat it, but barely, all & all this by far the best post "Jedi" book I have read, there is no Han, Leia, or Lando here, just Luke & Mara & some shady characters & many plot twist, Thrawn is referenced quite a bit, but I never could embrace him in the Heir to the Empire" Trilogy, why he would clone C'Both is beyond me, considering that their confrontation in "Outbound Flight" was downright ugly & menacing, although Thrawn was quite effective in that one, he just didn't rank with Sideous or other villians of the films as being the best non-film villian, but that is just me, it should be noted that this one came first, but "Outbound Flight" should be read before this one for continuty purposes, the only post-"Jedi" book I can recommend.

Surivivor's Quest, by Timothy Zahn, is part of the former Expanded Universe of Star Wars stories, now rendered as the alternate continuity by the Lucasfilm/Disney story folks. Written by Zahn, it is, of course, high quality.

It is also a tad unique in that it is much more action-packed than the other books. Yes, there is the "realism" of other Zahn titles, combined with the aspect of trying to figure out a mystery, but the main action takes up about a third of the book in a series of battles.

The basic story is that Jedi Masters Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker (Luke's wife) are summoned by the Chiss, via the Empire of the Hand. The Chiss Ascendancy, the people of Grand Admiral Thrawn, have discovered the remains of the Outbound Flight (which readers know from earlier books that Thrawn destroyed), and wish to hand them over to the Republic and the Jedi.

On the way, they meet aliens who wish to thank the Jedi of Outbound Flight for what they did saving their people from the slavers the Vagaari. But all is not as it seems, and if Luke, Mara, and others, including a man posing as an ambassador for personal reasons and Baron Fel's son leading a squad of the 501st Stormtroopers from the Empire of the Hand, can not figure out the truth, many lives will be lost.

The favorite part for me was seeing both the Chiss, who are awesome, and Luke and Mara's marriage. The Chiss are fascinating, and to see ones that are not anti-villains, but more heroic, was really cool. I loved also the closeness that Luke and Mara had. Seeing their marriage was nice because you see they love each other. I so hope they have Mara adapted into the main universe in Episode 7. I'd love to see her as Luke's wife there too. :D

Another part of the book I liked I can't describe well, as I'd give away major spoilers. Let's just say that Zahn gives us an emotionally and intellectually satisfying tale and leave it there.

Only thing I disliked was wincing at how Thrawn was given an in-universe historical hero upgrade among the characters. He wasn't as evil as other villains, but was still a bad guy.

All in all though, a great book that I Highly Recommend.

I love Timothy Zahn's books. The universe he has created is fascinating and he writes characters so well. After the excellent Heir trilogy and Hand of Thrawn duology, this follow up to Outbound Flight was fascinating, infuriating and much too short. We only have guest appearances from Talon Karrde and Booster. The infamous Car'das is only mentioned. We spend most of our time with Luke and Mara once they learn of the discovery of Outbound Flight. We also meet several of the Chiss and an Ambassador. If you've read Outbound Flight you will know instantly who the Ambassador is. The Geroon Remniant and a squad of the 501st round out the group on this mission.
Once the group makes it to Outbound Flight is where the action truly begins.

******** Spoilers below******** You have been warned.

There are survivors. That was shocking, along with the fact that they hate the Republic and the Jedi. I would've like to have spent more time on this dynamic, but the treachery puts that on the back burner and it doesn't really get resolved. I would've liked to have seen the captive potentials rescued and joined the new Jedi Academy. This book should've been much longer. It ended much too fast as well. That is one hallmark of the EU Zhan books, quick endings where I could've used a few more chapters.

We do learn more of why Luke and Mara work so well together they mesh beautifully. I'm more of Karrde fan, so I was disappointed to not see more of him. Given the insight into the Chiss, it is a warmup for the Chaos Rising new trilogy that is starting next week. Thrawn is one of the best characters in the Star Wars Universe and I love reading more about his exploits. This was a solid, action packed book that still left me wanting a great deal more.
