Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The action is fast and furious in this new Star Wars novel. The Empire has been defeated and the New Republic established, but internal dissension threatens to tear the newfound stability apart. Over the objections of President Leia Organa Solo, former Imperials have been admitted to the Senate?which is then bombed, killing many of Leia's old allies and injuring Leia herself. Leia believes that the former Imperials are to blame, but they accuse her husband, Han Solo, of treachery. As tension builds, it's discovered that another player has entered the game, the mysterious Kueller, a heretofore unknown master of the dark side of the Force. Leia's brother, Luke Skywalker, goes to investigate and, eventually, he, Han, Leia, Lando, Artoo, Threepio and other longtime Stars Wars characters find themselves fighting desperately to stave off the collapse of the New Republic. Rusch, who has won a John Campbell Award for Best Novel and a Hugo Award as Best Editor, and who has written numerous Star Trek novels, moves her narrative briskly, but at the expense of clear plotting, crisp detail and character.Still, what Star Wars fans want above all is action, and Rusch hurls it at them at warp speed. From Library Journal

Rusch (The Changling, Spectra, Bantam: 1996) here continues the Star Wars saga. Leia, Han, Luke, and Chewbacca face a new enemy?Kueller, Master of Almania, whose sights are set on destroying the Jedi Knight and his family in retribution for ignoring his planet's call for help years ago. Rusch introduces two of Luke's former Jedi students gone bad and the mechanic Cole Fardreamer, who assists C3PO and R2D2 in foiling Kueller's evil plans. Fast-paced and tightly plotted, this is highly recommended for all collections.

The New Rebellion is the first book written by Kristine Kathryn Rusch that I have read. I thought she did an excellent job in describing the characters' actions and in establishing the appropriate Star Wars atmosphere. Plus, the book was just fun to read.

The tale she weaves has the New Republic in serious trouble. Some mysterious force in the galaxy has caused the deaths of millions of beings marked by the associated result of a major disruption in the Force felt by Luke at his Jedi Academy and by Leia on Coruscant. Then a bomb explodes in the Senate Hall causing death and destruction. Allegations soon surface that Han Solo was involved. The mysterious force turns out to be a former student of Luke's who has assumed the name of Kueller. He has strong powers in the Force and is bent on the destruction of Luke, Leia, and Leia's Force-sensitive kids.

Ms Rusch tells a good story. We have Han going back to Smuggler's Run in an attempt to obtain information from some of his old smuggler associates. Han gets in trouble and Lando comes along in a rescue effort. Then Lando gets into serious trouble and Han mounts a rescue effort. Chewie is involved being his usual self. Luke is caught up in a personal battle with Kueller. Leia resigns her office as Chief of State and goes to help Luke. The book has a lot going on.

The New Rebellion also has one of my favorite scenes from the entire Star Wars saga. Artoo and Threepio are on their own for a while on a planet that is primarily a droid factory. Droids of all types are built there, most of them from used parts. The factory has room after room of droids, and our heroes end up in a room full of dormant astomech droids. R2 manages to spur the droids into action and mobilizes them in a flight to freedom. While R2 leads the astromechs, Threepio follows along constantly lamenting their fate but actually lending a hand in the fighting once in a while. I loved reading it.

The New Rebellion is an outstanding Star Wars tale.

I first read this novel back when I was a young teenager in the mid 1990's thirsty for stories that could peak my interest and ignite my imagination, even as my interest in the ladies began to keep my mind occupied more than anything else. Many years later, I still return to this book every five years or so for a re-read. The story is well planned, fluid, and the details of the setting and scenes are exquisitely done. There are few books that make me feel like I am occupying the same space as the characters, seeing and feeling and smelling what they do as they experience it too.

This story has so much to offer a reader that enjoys the Star Wars Universe - From shady smugglers and scoundrels, Force Sensitives hellbent on becoming the ultimate ruler in the galaxy, good friends, new allies to old threats - there is something here for everyone to enjoy!

This was great well written story. It had great mystery and suspense that literally gave me goosebumps. It made great use of the classic Star Wars characters as well as added some well developed new characters like the really scary villain Kueller. It also gave a backstory to one of my favorite expanded universe villains, Brackiss. Excellent plot and character development but my biggest complaint was it got kind of long and wordy and it described a lot of crazy complex aliens that were really hard to picture

Wow, what a breath of fresh air! After the narcoleptic "Black Fleet Crisis," this one-off ultimately pointless story was a refreshing return to good storied Star Wars. While certainly no masterpiece, and it may just be a bit of honeymoon phase from the drivel of the "Black Fleet Crisis" that preceded it, I did enjoy this book. The evil Kueller, dark Jedi and failed student of Luke Skywalker has a plan to blow up the galaxy with sabotaged droids being stolen and shipped out by smugglers on Smuggler's Run, then conquer the wounded New Republic. It's a simple plot with a few twists and turns typical of a science fiction adventure book. The pitfalls, however, are in that everything is wrapped up a little too quickly and too easily. Example: Lando Calrissian goes to Smuggler's Run to find Han Solo, whom he believes to be in danger, when he's captured by the Glottalphib, Nandreeson. Nandreeson traps him in his pool of goo for a while until Lando slowly drowns. Then Han gets the smugglers together and frees Lando. This is wrapped up about halfway through the book. As such, if it's going to be wrapped up that quickly, what's the point in even having it in there to begin with? Nandreeson ultimately plays no role in Kuellers droid sabotaging scheme, and Lando doesn't contribute much to the story or plot other than being an extra body. Another example: Kueller is about to kill Luke when Leia shoots him. THAT'S THE END OF THAT. Where this book does shine, however, is that the plot if easy enough to follow that it's not too insipid, but clever enough to where it isn't convoluted. While not essential if you're trying to get the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe story connected, I do recommend this book simply for the fact that, if you are reading them all in chronological order, it's a nice break between the "Black Fleet Crisis" (brb vomiting) and "The Corellian Trilogy."
