Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anderson, whose Jedi Academy trilogy of Star Wars paperbacks were all bestsellers, makes his Star Wars hardcover debut with this novel. Unlike many of the previous series hardcovers, Darksaber often harkens back to the time of the Star Wars movies, invoking familiar scenes and flourishes (Princess Leia being forced to wear a "humiliating costume" after she's captured by Jabba the Hutt; Han Solo entreating, "It's not my fault!"). Anderson is careful, though, to include plenty of present-day action. Set just after the events of Barbara Hambly's Children of the Jedi, this novel follows the quest of Luke Skywalker and Callista to reestablish the latter's Jedi powers. Meanwhile, Durga the Hutt is using Bevel Lemelisk, co-designer of the original Death Star, to create a similar weapon for his own nefarious purposes, and the still-living Admiral Daala is working to reunite various factions of the Empire to reassert their glory. Anderson manages to keep everything fast-paced, yet the whole never coheres into a properly exciting story. This is probably the most accessible of the Star Wars hardcovers; fans of the movies should experience nostalgic delight, but it often comes off as more of a marketing device than a novel proper, especially with George Lucas's three-part prequel to the Star Wars movies now in the works.

From Library Journal

Eight years after the Empire's collapse, its scattered remnants still pose a threat to the fledgling New Republic. While Luke embarks on a journey to help his beloved Callista recover her Jedi powers, Han and Leia investigate rumors of a collaboration between an ambitious Hutt crimelord and the Imperial forces. In brief, cinematic chapters, the author of Jedi Search (Bantam, 1994) captures the excitement and fast-paced action so essential to the Star WarsTM universe. Fans of the popular series will demand this title.

Yes, I have a lot of books, and if this is your first visit to my amazon author page, it can be a little overwhelming. If you are new to my work, let me recommend a few titles as good places to start. My major new fantasy trilogy (all finished!) consists of SPINE OF THE DRAGON, VENGEWAR and GODS AND DRAGONS. My newest Dune novel with Brian Herbert is THE HEIR OF CALADAN, end of a new trilogy. I also love my Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. series—newest one is DOUBLE-BOOKED— humorous horror/mysteries, which begin with DEATH WARMED OVER. My steampunk fantasy adventures, CLOCKWORK ANGELS, CLOCKWORK LIVES, and CLOCKWORK DESTINY, written with Neil Peart, legendary drummer from Rush, are some of my very favorite novels ever. And my magnum opus, the science fiction epic The Saga of Seven Suns, begins with HIDDEN EMPIRE. After you've tried those, I hope you'll check out some of my other series.

I have written more than 175 books, including 59 national or international bestsellers. I have over 24 million books in print worldwide in thirty languages. I've been nominated for the Nebula Award, Hugo Award, Bram Stoker Award, Shamus Award, and Silver Falchion Award, and I've won the SFX Readers' Choice Award, Golden Duck Award, Scribe Award, and New York Times Notable Book; in 2012 at San Diego Comic Con I received the Faust Grand Master Award for Lifetime Achievement.

I have written numerous bestselling and critically acclaimed novels in the Dune universe with Brian Herbert, as well as Star Wars and X-Files novels. In my original work, I am best known for my Saga of Seven Suns series, the Terra Incognita trilogy, the Dan Shamble, Zombie PI series, and Clockwork Angels and Clockwork Lives with Neil Peart. Along with my wife Rebecca Moesta, I am also the publisher of WordFire Press. Find out more about me at wordfire.com, where you can sign up for my newsletter and get some free fiction.

I couldn't stand Barbara Hambly's "Children of the Jedi", and I am equally struggling through "Planet of Twilight". However, I was both surprised and relieved when reading this book, as KJA actually has some interesting material as far as jedi and space action goes. Yes, there is another recycled super weapon, and yes this combined with the whiny subplot of Callista is distracting and annoying, but I actually found more pros than cons. Those who didn't get on well with the Jedi Academy Trilogy (some problems there) will find that KJA handles the actions of the Jedi trainees rather well, and Dorsk 81 takes a more interesting role in this novel that I found refreshing from the whole Kyp Durron fiasco. Bevel Lemelisk is also somewhat of an interesting character, and provides some comic relief that is somehow NOT corny, but ironic and humorous. Maybe it was because "Children of the Jedi" was a mess of terribly handled EU material and BELOW terrible writing (fans, STAY AWAY unless you are hardcore EU!), but I honestly would have enjoyed this novel anyway, despite it's three-part, weak plot. I definitely recommend it, now I'm off to read Hambly's Planet of Twilight, yippee...

While I enjoy the continuing story of Luke's for-now love of his life Callista, I'm a bit turned off by all the talk of "but we're Jedi, we can take a few Imperials". Also somewhat of a turnoff is the apparent timidity of most of the Jedi on Yavin when faced with the prospect of actually having to use their Jedi powers in action instead of just training. It seems kind of cowardly to me.

Kevin Anderson crafts stories of Star Wars that few other writers can approach!! This book was outstanding and extremely well written!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021
This feels like a direct sequel to the jedi Academy trilogy but I can't help but feel like Anderson was given this extra character (Callista) and didn't really know what to do with her for the first half of the book.
