The definitive, lavishly illustrated reference guide to the universe of the first six films!

This comprehensive boxed set of three hefty volumes covers every aspect of
Star Wars, from the original six movies to The Clone Wars, radio dramas, comics, novels, cartoons, short stories, and video games. With a treasure trove of information on more than thirty years of Star Wars—and a millennia in the galaxy far, far away—this is the must-have centerpiece for every Star Wars library. Abundantly illustrated with full-color artwork and photos, and now in a new three-volume edition to accommodate its wealth of detailed entries, the Star Wars Encyclopedia encompasses the full measure of George Lucas’s creation.

Here’s just a sampling of what’s inside:
• character portraits of both the renowned (Luke Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Darth Vader) and the obscure (Tnun Bdu, Tycho Celchu, Bib Fortuna)
• the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Hoth, Dagobah and Kashyyyk
• the rituals, secrets, and traditions of Jedi Knights and Sith Lords
• a timeline of major events in
Star Wars history, from the Clone Wars and the inception of the Empire to the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the invasion of the monstrous Yuuzhan Vong

Scrupulously researched and written by leading authorities Stephen J. Sansweet, Pablo Hidalgo, Bob Vitas, and Daniel Wallace, this landmark work is the must-have centerpiece of every
Star Wars library.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, December 2008: Updated for the first time in 10 years, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia is the closest fans will come to having access to the great Holocron from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Housed in a sturdy slipcase, the illustrated, three-volume hardcover set holds an A-Z overview of all things Star Wars--from the original trilogy and the prequels to the expanded universe of novels, comics, cartoons, and video games. Most entries on the three-column pages garner a few sentences while core characters and fan favorites like the family Fett spill over to multiple pages of data. As fans know, nearly everyone who appeared onscreen in the films has gone on to receive an entire backstory, but even die-hard fans will delight in the discoveries found on every page. Random, Magic 8 Ball-style browsing brought up head-scratchers like Malarian Alliance, Traest Kre'fey, Rybet, Lieutenant Colf, Guun Han Saresh, bruise-leech crawler, and Ion Alley. And did you know that the bug-eyed alien "dog" in Jabba's palace on Tatooine had a name--"Bubo"--and was in fact a spy and an assassin? According to Yoda, "size matters not," but this 10-pound box set will make a welcome addition to the serious Star Wars fan's bookshelf. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Great set of books, but make sure you have the right volumes before opening.
4 Stars
Great set of books, but make sure you have the right volumes before opening.
These books are an amazing reference for any Star Wars nerd, and I couldn't be happier digging through all the weird and obscure entries. However, I urge anyone who buys this to check the spines of the volumes before you remove the shrink wrap. After unwrapping mine I realized I had an extra volume 2 where volume 1 should've been (see image). Amazon sent me a replacement set within a couple days so all is well, but if you're giving these as a gift or something it could obviously be a bigger problem. I'm still very happy with these books despite the minor manufacturing issue.

My 8 year old grandson is a huge Star Wars fan. He wanted to improve his knowledge and see more of the history. These books are a beautiful combination of pictures, words and information for this age group and beyond. Books are well constructed, heavy and pages are glossy but solid. He is now 11 and still getting enjoyment from these books, to sharing with friends and referencing as he has been allowed to watch more of the movies. He has several older relatives that have gone and purchased this collection.

Well what more can a SW fan ask for? A hard cover, beautifully presented reference to the greatest science fiction saga ever told. Open it up and see a perfectly shipped slip case holding three more brilliant, perfectly presented hard cover references to the glorious Star Wars universe, presented to whoever uses it in glorious, full colour, intricate detail, featuring literally everything in Star Wars from 'A' to 'Z'.

Book one: Volume 1: A -G. First entry: A-10. The book actually refers you to the "A9 Vigilance Interceptor" and gives the reader a brilliantly detailed, insightful, delightful description of this piece of imperial Warcraft, as well as its pros and cons in use. Turning the pages, we see that comics are covered, as well as fan favourite Admiral Acbaar ("...it's a trap!!!...") The reference to Chewbacca is given one full page of text. Book two: Volume 2: H - O. I went straight to the only "O" entry I could think of and found four pages dedicated to the greatest Jedi master to ever pick up a light sabre. Volume 3: P-Z. Going straight to everyone's favourite villian we see Emperor Palpatine given roughly three pages of descriptive space in this volume. Described initially and correctly as "evil incarnate" the book talks about Palpatine's upbringing and early political career, going on to how he used ongoing plicitical and civil unrest both on Coruscant and throughout the republic to devise and manipulate pawns (Dooku, Anakin Skywalker amongst others) in his power to achieve unheard and ghastly results. The rest as we know, is history.

Plaudits must also go to Amazon for their shipping policies and protocols. Coming from the US and arriving down under in a perfect, unmarked condition is a modern day marvel.

So in summary this book is an essential reference to the Star Wars saga. With the recent announcement of Disney making more Star Wars films, we might question it's relevance, but as for now, this is the best it here is. And I am sure that a new edition will be released for episodes VII, VIII, IX et al. May the force be with Disney!

I was wondering with all the Star Wars books that I have-do I really need this? Yes I do! If I ever want additional information about anything in the Star Wars Universe, I can just look it up in this volume. To say that it is comprehensive is an understatement. You could read for probably 7 minutes on the Death Star and learn that it was a project of Grand Moff Tarkin and that they had problems with Sabotage initially as an example.
What's great is that it has taken all the information for what seems like every book in the Star wars Universe (which is a ton) and put all that information here for us to digest in easy sittings. The same strength is also a weakness considering that information is no longer Cannon with Disney having purchased the franchise but the information is compelling nonetheless. An example is in the Princess Leia Organa piece it talks a lot about Jacen and Jaina Solo the twins and her Daughter with Han whose prominence rises in the Thrawn Trilogy, but those characters will presumably not exist with the coming of the new trilogy. Regardless, a great piece for the big Star wars fan. Pick it up used for around $50 and it is well worth your money and time.

I enjoy the movies but could not tell you anything about the deeper esoteric details. Bought this for someone who lives and breathes Star Wars (even reads the comic books etc). He squealed like a little girl when he opened the gift wrap.

After he was done drooling, I asked to have a look. The books are fine quality, printing is of a high caliber and the books have fantastic illustrations. A great gift for any Star Wars fan.

I have not read this from cover to cover yet, but I have been using it as a very handy reference source for when I run across terms/situations/characters that I am not familiar with in the Expanded Universe books I read.

This is the first version of the Star Wars Encyclopedia that I have ever read or owned, so I have no way to compare how it stacks up to previous versions, but I am not unhappy at all with the information I have found in it. And unlike similar resources that you can find online, it is easy to stay focused with what you are looking for. There is nothing that I have wanted to look up that I have not been able to find in its pages.

As a side note, it would be interesting to be able to to see what media or titles the entry can be found in.

I would reommend the Encyclopedia to anyone who has an interest in the Star Wars Universe beyond the movies. If your gut reaction is that this is too much information or that you would not find it interesting, then you are probably right. If you are thinking that this is just up your alley, then you too would be right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wirklich sehr gute Enzyklopädie die in keiner SW Sammlung fehlen darf!
Reviewed in Germany on April 17, 2018

5.0 out of 5 stars Un must-have para cualquier fan de Star Wars
Reviewed in Spain on December 27, 2017
