STAR WARS GALAXIES:
AN EMPIRE DIVIDED!

It is a time of great turmoil. The oppressive Empire is close to seizing complete control of the galaxy. The ragtag guerrilla army of the Rebel Alliance fights on, striking wherever it can, but now something has come to light that could spell certain doom. Hidden in the Jedi ruins of Dantooine is a Holocron containing a list of high-level Rebel sympathizers. If that list were to fall into the hands of Darth Vader, the Rebel Alliance would lose its most valued support—and possibly the war itself.

As an Imperial bio-engineer who frequently visits other worlds, Dusque Mistflier is the perfect cover for a Rebel who needs to travel far and wide without arousing suspicion. And so she agrees to help Rebel spy Finn Darktrin in his quest to recover the crucial Holocron. Despite help from Han, Luke, and Leia, the mission is fraught with peril. And as their journey takes them into the fiery belly of the beast that is galactic civil war, Dusque and Finn will learn that the hardest part of all is figuring out whose side you’re on—and how far you’re willing to go to win. . . .

The book came damaged on some parts of the cover. On the top there was some dirty spots. I know being a paperback book over time it will look used but it would be nice to have a new looking book when it comes. Some of us like to collect these books too.Thank you

A different writing style than most Star Wars books. Overall another great story to add to the Star Wars saga.

It was good

With the announcement that Star Wars Galaxies was shutting down, I decided to ignore the bad reviews surrounding this book and buy it anyway, both as a collector and out of curiosity. Ruins of Dantooine quickly seperated itself from other Star Wars books by making it obvious to anyone who'd played the game before that this was indeed a game advertizement and tie-in. The only species mentioned in the book were those selectable during character creation or otherwise viewable in the game. The only animals mentioned were those that players could hunt for experience points. The only locations mentioned and visited were those that could also be reached during gameplay. It was as though the author was told, "If it doesn't happen in Star Wars Galaxies, it doesn't happen. If you can't see it in Star Wars Galaxies, it doesn't exist for your book." Anyone even moderately versed in Star Wars lore will quickly say, "wait a minute, this is pretty awkward...". Despite these severe writing restrictions, the author still manages to tell an interesting story.

At one point, a chapter started off implying that a character was in mortal peril. The story then flashed back in time to a rather dull scene, and when the flashback finally caught back up to the present time, the character actually wasn't in any danger at all. It was a cheap, dirty trick to keep people from putting the book down during what was a necessary but boring scene, but it worked. The number of cameos made by the movie characters seemed difficult to believe at first (out of all the planets in the galaxy, and all the cantinas, Lando Calrissian just happens to be in the same one as the main character, who goes on to have more 'chance' run-ins with every other key Alliance member??). But with the realization that they weren't chance encounters and that everyone was where they were intentionally, it can be swallowed.

As the story and characters develop, we see yet another example of what might cause people to betray the Empire and join the alliance. We've seen it over and over, for people like Kyle Katarn and even Luke Skywalker - the motivation has been "the Empire killed my family/friends/loved ones because they were rebels! I'm going to be a rebel too now!"

The biggest, most glaring flaw this book had - and this is why I rated it as I did - was the massive skew against the Imperials. The Empire was made out to be a bunch of cruel, oppressive, sexist murderers - a government with absolutely zero redeeming qualities, that must be fought against and overthrown at any cost. Other books have taken this viewpoint as well, but if any book had an obligation to show both sides of the war, it was this one. Ruins of Dantooine is faithful to the game in every single other area - so why not portray characters gladly fighting for the Empire? The summary implied there would be heroes choosing sides, just as players are able to in the game, but instead, only one side ever is chosen and shown until the very end. Maybe Star Wars Galaxies was low on players siding the Rebel Alliance, so they printed this book as a propaganda machine to even the sides of the war out.

Still, all things considered, the book told a good story. It hyped me up to play Star Wars Galaxies (there are still ways to play, even with the game shutting down). And since that's what the book was written to accomplish, it was a total success. Sure, there are plenty of flaws that could be pointed out, but at the core of everything, it was a ultimately a good read. I wasn't overcome with rage or the urge to throw the book in the garbage, as I have with others (Rise of the Dark Lord). If you've ever played SWG, it's worth a couple of bucks to own a copy of this.

As crappy as it's namesake might have been (Galaxies, RIP) This book is very well written. I picked it up simply because I own all the other novels, and read it because I've read all the other novels, and was surprised by how good it was. It felt more like a novel from the earlier days of Star Wars books. The cover is terrible, but remember what your momma said about judging things by their appearance.
If you grew up reading short stories from the Star Wars Adventure Journal, this book will bring a smile to your face. There is even an appearance by High Inquisitor Tremaine! If all you've read is recent stuff, than don't try to compare this book with anything you've read. While Del Rey has made some good decisions, and there are more and more exciting new books every year, they've also streamlined it a bit too much, and most of what you see is written by a select few writers. If you were annoyed by the Squibs as much as I was, this will be just the thing to cure you. It reminds us what we saw in Star Wars in the first place. A wide a wondrous galaxy full of adventure and countless tales from all walks of life.
And thanks to the disdain shown to Galaxies, this book is usually priced very cheap. When I bought it at a used book store, they actually threw it in for free with my purchase of a couple others. (Which seemed grim, since they weren't running a promotion)
The Bottom Line: A great read in the style of Star Wars Novels from the 90s.

I read the reviews about this book and how negative they were but i ordered it used anyway - it was very cheap. I was surprised that it was not nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be, granted i could see the way it was going to end - it is very clearly foreshadowed. But it is nowhere near the worse Star Wars novel i have read. It takes a little to get into but still i found it to be a decent novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ein sehr unterschätztes Buch
Reviewed in Germany on June 10, 2005

THE STORY:
The Rebels enlist the help of an Imperial biologist, Dusque Mistflier, in seeking out a list of sympathisers hidden on Dantooine. However, the Empire has also despatched an agent to search for the list.
WHAT'S GOOD:
Cameos are always good in Star Wars books and here we get brief appearances by Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie and the Droids, as well as Lando, Wedge Antilles, Darth Vader and Nym (from the 'Starfighter' and 'Jedi Starfighter' computer games). The prologue is also very good, showing how even a feared Imperial Inquisitor is nothing next to Vader and also giving us a glimpse of what Naboo is like in the Imperial era.
WHAT'S BAD:
Quite a bit, unfortunately. I was looking forward to a new novel in the classic era, but this is little more than an advert for the 'Galaxies' computer game (and to think Lucasfilm cancelled a Clone Wars novel in favour of this!). Dusque and Finn are entirely two dimensional and the plot twist about them at the end is something you figure out in the first few chapters. Also, the cameos seem a bit forced, as if the plan was to cram as many recognisable characters in as they can. I think it's a bit sad that Lucasfilm aren't confident enough in the Star Wars franchise to publish a book that doesn't feel the need to establish as many links to the films as possible. Finally, what annoyed me most was the animal encounters. At times this book reads like a guide to Star Wars zoology, with a new species of creature (presumably featured in the game) pops up every couple of pages.
Very much a forced attempt, with no real innovation behind it.

One of the most disgraceful pieces of Mary-Sue fanfic I have ever had the misfortune to read. Only commissioned as propaganda for a computer game that time has forgotten, this is a grim reminder that not everything with the Star Wars logo stamped on it is worthy of your time and effort, let alone your money. Nobody even mentions Dantooine until page 184. Incompetently written, an excuse for the author to meet her heroes and have a crush on Harrison Ford. It hasn't even got a nice cover designed by an artist, merely a random screenshot from the game. Dreadful.

Großer Wiedererkennungswert, der Erinnerungen an eines der besten MMORPGs wieder hochkommen lässt - Pre-NGE, wohlgemerkt.
