i was rather skeptical of this book as i was not familiar with the author and somewhat new to the star wars universe. I love the timothy zahn series and when i finished reading his books, i found myself eager to find an author that rivals his style. sure enough, i think michael reaves is that author. the story starts a bit slow and not too interesting but quickly dives deep into the force afterwards. What threw me for a loop was the fact that the book was more about the characters Lorn Pavan, his droid and a jedi padawan then it was about Darth Maul, or so it seemed. the book is perceived through different perspectives, that of darth maul and that of Lorn, I-Five, and Darsha(jedi padawan); Reaves also throws in a couple of chapters involving young Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon.

the entire book is really well written. when Reaves talks of darth maul and darth sidious...you begin to feel the dark side of the force within you(as silly as that sounds) and the same goes for the portions of the book that involve the jedi side, where you begin to feel peace and serenity. what im trying to say is that Michael Reaves gets you involved emotionally in the book. the ending had my heart pounding not only because of the way it ends but also because i've grown fond of some characters and found respect for others.

****this is my first review ever, that being said, i found this book good enough to review...hope you enjoy*****
