This outstanding book provides significant insight into Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader. Sure he's got the name and allegiance to the Dark Side already, but the loss to Obi Wan on Mustafar, Padme's death, and the newfound reliance on life-sustaining armor have all shaken his confidence. That's where the story begins. He grows into his full powers as the story progresses. Despite the book's title, Vader isn't really the primary character for much of the story. The plot focuses on Jedi Knight Roan Shryne, Padawan Olee Starstone, and a few other survivors of order 66. The climactic confrontation between Shryne and Vader is one of the best Star Wars scenes ever written. How they both find their place in the force during the battle and it's interesting outcome are outstanding. Chewbacca is also introduced during the battle which takes place on his native planet of Kashyyk. This scene is a precursor to the Wookie enslavement where tens of thousands are shipped off to help build the Death Star that you have probably read about in other tomes if you follow the series.

This book is a fantastic bridge from Episode III to what follows. Vader finds his place and the Emperor begins consolidating his power. The characters are well written, the pace fast moving, and the action first rate. I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended!
