I actually had read volume 2 first and absolutely loved it! I was somewhat worried how this volume would compare and if it would matter that I read volume 2 first. I needn’t have worried, this author is such a great fantasy writer. The words flow effortlessly and his books are a real treat to read.
Obviously many of the characters and story lines were familiar to me. The author is able to draw the reader right into every setting so that the reader feels present in every part of this book. You will feel like you are right there beside the characters as they move through time and space.
Conor Archer is a very likable young man. I could easily visualize his youth and beauty and drawn to root for him. He is a strong, well developed character with most of the story revolving around him. The characters that travel with him are also likable , from the wise chocolate lab, his elderly aunt to the teen twins who befriend him when he first arrives in the town of his birth.
As likable as these characters are one is easily able to visualize and develop dislike for the villains who also play a major part in this story. Overall the characters of this book are well rounded thanks to the author string ability to use words to build characters.
The scenery and landscapes are equally as well developed and easy to visualize. The scenery and story line at times are dark and at other times purely magical and beautiful beyond belief. The author weaves an absolutely magical fantasy full of mystery and mythology. He often uses Native American and Celtic myths that may be familiar to the reader yet adds his own creative twist. Young and old alike can relate to this book and will enjoy reading as the mysteries unfold.
