Padawan Kindle Edition

BEING A TEENAGER IS HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT ALSO TRAINING TO BE A JEDI…. Obi-Wan Kenobi has not been apprenticed long to Qui-Gon Jinn, and he is chafing at Qui-Gon's training style: all meditation, no action. Obi-Wan yearns to prove himself on a mission, but when he and Qui-Gon are finally set to leave on an assignment, Qui-Gon is nowhere to be found. Angered by his master's abandonment, Obi-Wan sets out on the mission alone, determined to prove himself. On a mysterious planet he encounters a pack of feral, Force-wielding teens who seem to be the planet's only inhabitants. As he experiences wild freedom with them and wonders if this isn't the life he was meant for, Obi-Wan can't escape the nagging sense that something is wrong with the Force there. Growing attachments, startling revelations, and a looming threat to both the planet and his new friends will bring Obi-Wan face-to-face with his worst fear: that maybe he was never supposed to be a Jedi at all. Can he connect with the living Force in time to save himself and everyone around him? It's the star of the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ limited series as you've never seen him before…

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-With Obi-Wan Kenobi taking over Disney+, this novel features some never before seen backstory for young Obi-Wan and the beginnings of his relationship with Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan sets off alone to a mysterious planet and finds a feral group of teen Force-users, while Qui-Gon struggles to find out what is wrong with the Force on this planet. Obi-Wan wrestles with the question of whether he should be a Jedi at all. Ultimately, this is a coming-of-age story about finding yourself and where you belong. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are both white and the only main human characters. VERDICT With Obi-Wan a cornerstone of the "Star Wars" franchise with a recent blockbuster show, this title is recommended for general purchase.α(c) Copyright 2011. Don’t listen to the haters!
5 Stars
Don’t listen to the haters!
I see a lot of negative reviews on here because of VERY BRIEF (maybe a few paragraphs) about Obi-Wan contemplating his sexuality and how he experiences attraction, but don’t listen to those negative voices. This books is a fun and surprisingly deep self-discovery adventure that will make you laugh and cry, and serves as a perfect book-end to the Kenobi series. If you get offended over a few paragraphs about fictional character questioning his sexuality, it’s your loss.

Good book

I am an adult who is a huge Star Wars fan and have been looking to fill in my knowledge of Star Wars by trying to read as much of what is canon. I do not believe in spoilers so there won't be any here. If you are looking for a bit more info about the story, I would definitely recommend reading the description of this book from the listing as that is the description from the inner liner of the hardcover that I purchased.

Padawan is a story about Obi-Wan Kenobi set before Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. We see a younger Obi-Wan who is not so sure that he belongs in the Jedi Order, questioning his connection to The Force and questioning his master's teachings. He leaves on an adventure that he's not sure he should be taking on his own. Obi-Wan finds himself on a planet with others that he thinks are using The Force, but are they really? Through out the book Obi-Wan learns how to connect with The Force and puts quite a few of his master's teaching into practice, all while figuring out his place in The Force and solidifying who he wants to be. In the end he answers his own questions while doing what he set out to do, help others to the best of his ability.

As an adult reading this book, I found that I couldn't put this book down. The book is an easy read, has a great story, and while not as in depth in story as say Harry Potter (which I have read & love), I didn't find it as a "children's story". The author does a great job of telling a story that doesn't get too mired down in deep details but provides enough narration to allow your mind to easily picture everything that is going on in that moment.

All in all, I found the story to be entertaining and it fit in nicely with developing Obi-Wan Kenobi's background as a Padawan Learner, helping to establish further the Obi-Wan that we see in the movies & TV shows. For the Star Wars fan who wants to know more about the Star Wars Universe and it's main characters, I would definitely recommend this book to them.

Padawan is a young-adult canon novel set sometime before the events of The Phantom Menace. In the book, Obi-Wan is chafing under his clashing style with Qui-Gon, feeling that he is not learning from Qui-Gon, and is thus not being a good Padawan to Qui-Gon. In researching the archives, Obi-Wan learns of the location of a mysterious planet that was found by a Jedi Wayfinder, who believed the planet was worth studying. Since there was no record of the Jedi ever returning, Obi-Wan proposes a mission to the planet that he hopes will bring him and Qui-Gon closer together. Obi-Wan ends up traveling to the planet alone and finds a group of younglings who appear to be force-sensitive that are being attacked by everything on the planet, including the planet itself.

The book is a very good stand-alone story. Even though the story is mostly self-contained, there are some tie-ins (some subtle some not) to the movies and animated series including how Obi-Wan first met Dex, the alien that ran the diner in Attack of the Clones. It is basically a story about Obi-Wan finding his place in the Jedi order and his connection to The Force. The book is on the longer side of the young-adult novels, at just over 400 pages. Even so, it is a fairly quick read, so if you are a fast reader you should easily be able to finish it in a day or two. The story is good but not as good as the stories in some of the other novels. There are definitely some silly parts, but on the whole, it is a good story that is worth reading.

I loved this book from start to finish I loved it so much I finished it in a day. I couldn’t put it down and read it for 9 hours straight I felt like I was binge watching a new show. The way Kiersten described obi wan and what he was thinking was perfect to me and having seen the movies a million times I felt like everytime Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan talked I can hear their voices. The landscape of the planet of Lenahra sounded to be both beautiful and terrifying. I can only imagine what those gobblers must have looked like. Definitely changed the way I view obi wan in the movies now knowing more of how much he struggled to find meaning in his life.

After seeing all the uproar from the vocal minority in these reviews, I was a bit apprehensive going in, not knowing what exactly I was delving into. However, after reading the book I found these reviews to be full of gross exaggerations. Anyone claiming this book has an agenda has an agenda all their own and not an innocent one at that.

What it all comes down to is that a lonely teenage boy, who’s the odd man out in his peer group, clumsily flirts with Obi-Wan leaving him, who’s extremely sheltered and all of 16 himself, a bit embarrassed and confused. That’s pretty much it, nothing more. Weird that a Jedi, who had been raised to avoid forming attachments would be a bit confused when flirted with for the first time. I know… Oh and there is a non-binary changeling… a changeling! The horror… I know. Just crazy.

Anyway, all that hoopla aside, the book is good enough but not great. If you’ve read Master and Apprentice it will feel very repetitive as Obi-Wan has all the same self-doubts that he had in that novel. I would’ve also preferred more action but it picks up towards the end in that regard. It’s also very much a solo Obi-Wan adventure, so don’t expect alot of Qui-Gon. Overall I’d recommend it to any fan of Star Wars that enjoys reading. It’s only 305 pages so not too much of a time sink either. And while undoubtedly aimed at the younger demographic, adults such as myself should be able to enjoy it too.
