Star Wars: Convergence (The High Republic) Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

The next adventure in the High Republic begins expanding the new era of Star Wars, with a story set generations before Light of the Jedi.

It is an age of exploration. Jedi travel the galaxy, expanding their understanding of the Force and all the worlds and beings connected by it. Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars.

On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. The two worlds’ hatred for each other has fueled half a decade of escalating conflict and now threatens to consume surrounding systems. The last hope for peace emerges when heirs from the planets’ royal families plan to marry.

Before lasting peace can be established, an assassination attempt targeting the couple tilts Eiram and E’ronoh back into all-out war. To save both worlds, Jedi Knight Gella Nattai volunteers to uncover the culprit, while Chancellor Kyong appoints her own son, Axel Greylark, to represent the Republic’s interests in the investigation.

But Axel’s deep distrust of the Jedi sparks against Gella’s faith in the Force. She’s never met such a puffed-up, privileged party boy, and he’s never met a more self-serious, relentless do-gooder. The harder they work to untangle the shadowy web of the investigation, the more complicated the conspiracy appears to be. With accusations flying and potential enemies in every shadow, the pair will have to work together to have any hope of bringing the truth to light and saving both worlds.

Eiram and E'ronoh are two planets locked in orbit with a moon between. Their war, dubbed the Forever War, has grown hot again, affecting nearby trade and the Republic. Jedi and Republic forces visit to see if there is some way to find peace. I really enjoyed this High Republic novel despite it never leaving the system. Adventure, action, a dash of romance with wonderfully complex characters, I hope more High Republic novels follow this example.
Highly recommended for Star Wars fans.

This book makes a Star Wars fan think forward ( well for us in our real galaxy back) to naboo. Jedi thrive, because they grow in a sense. 'During great conflict we do.' Jedi, are not only players in this novel avoid of attachments.
Some attachments to do form, for necessity, but leaving lo g if it is lasting. Bring a reader back think of Naboo, well into the New Hope. Jedi looking to find themselves in the sanctity of the Temple. Maybe Ankin should read this ancient text ( maybe Vader is at this very moment referring to the actor).

It is relatable to life as we live, it sadly of those live outside the Star Wars Universe. Unlike you: authors, actors, 501 ST ers, and countless other such as your self
Jedi Master Zoraida Cordova.

It’s a bit random that the publishers decided to do a prequel duology interlude after Fallen Star - and, one book in, the purpose still isn’t exactly clear. There are like two sentences suggesting some backstory for Marchion Roe will be revealed, but if so then it’ll have to come in the next book.

But otherwise, Zoraida Cordova takes some really fun swings with her Star Wars story. It’s very unlike the other High Republic books. It’s ultimately a romance, essentially focusing on two couples, one destined to succeed, the other to fail. It’s that part of the book that probably works the best, save for how telegraphed it is; Princess Xiri is swooning over Prince Phan-tu the moment she sees his rippling muscles in the ocean waves. It just takes far too long to arrive at that premise. It’s literally halfway before you’re like, “Oh! This is this book now.”

Up until then, the plot spends a lot of time setting up the conflict between the warring planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, which probably could’ve been done more efficiently. In particular, main character Gella Nettai’s contingent of Jedi get too much focus when they don’t really end up being super relevant to the story. The cultures of the two planets are also very Dune-inspired, and the worldbuilding kind of pales in comparison to those books. I also think Cordova’s prose tries to reach Dune levels of solemn importance without really earning it.

But my main complaint with the first High Republic trilogy was that the characters got swallowed up by the plot, and that’s not an issue here. Xiri, Phan-Tu, Axel and Gella make for a very likable and contrasty bunch, even if their character arcs don’t always quite work for me. Gella remains kind of an enigma, the reason for her angst left for the next book. Axel’s angst gets a little more explanation though again there’s a lot left to explore. Xiri and Phan-Tu get slightly more closure and I’ll be interested to see if this is it for them or if their story continues.

Convergence kind of leaves you feeling like it was all prologue, like the much bigger story is for the next entry. And I mean yes, it’s a prequel, but there’s obviously a self contained storyline here that only just starts to bloom. But I was interested enough to where I’ll immediately start reading Cataclysm.

This book was a slog for me. It's not entirely the author's fault because she was establishing brand new characters, planets, and conflicts, but it felt like a side story especially compared to the YA novels in Phase II. It's almost like LucasFilm publishing got the YA and adult books mixed up and instead of admitting it, they are just pretending nothing happened.

That said, once the third act started, everything started to pick up momentum and I was hooked. Confusing motivations/actions by some characters. But overall the final scenes were remarkable and very cinematic.

Initially, I questioned why, in the middle of the High Republic saga, we needed to jump back in time. Yet, as I got to know Captain Xiri and Prince Phan-Tu, watching them fall in love and Jedi Natti and Axel come to grips with their places in the galaxy; it didn't matter any more. These new characters were a delight to get to know, and it makes you forget that most of the questions to how this leads to the fall of Starlight beacon are not answered. Not yet. Sometimes, you just need a good love story and a high flying adventure instead of focusing on continuity.

I really enjoyed this book. This is a great start to Phase Two of the High Republic books, who's are a prequel to Phase One. This book has a great story and even better characters. In fact Gella Nattai has jumped to the front of the line as my faverite Jedi in the High Republic era.

A cease fire has been called between the neighbouring but waring plannets of Eiram and E'ronoh. The Republic see this as an opportunity for not only to forge a lasting peace but to bring these outer rim worlds into the Republic as well. However,

"Peace is a choice"

What happens when other parties within and outside the planets don't want to make that choice.

I really enjoyed seeing the characters come together. Some overcoming their own pasts, and prejudices to see the future, but there are other trapped in the past.

For the Jedi's part, I do like that there are more roles/paths for them to follow than just Knight or Master. Also I like the way the High Republic era Jedi are more seekers of the Force and unsure of their paths or more willing to learn and accepting of new ideas, and if all else fails, there are other Forced based religions out there.

I really hope to see all for these characters again. Yes, mainly I am really invested in Gella Nattai and want to see the continuation of her journey. As well as her developing more of her two lightsaber fighting style. I do not even mind if she emerges in the Phase One era. The bar has been set super high with this first book, I can't wait for Phase Two to continue.

I keep on getting emails from Amazon asking me to review this book... really annoying! Fine, so be it...as I haven't really had the time to sit down and read (end of the year work stuff takes it's toll) I can tell you that that what I have read, 15 pages or so, is good. Unfortunately, I have the bad habit of reading in bed I tend to fall asleep right before I start to get into the story. By no means do I wish to convey that this book is boring, from what I've read it's not. It's just that my being tired is stronger than the storyline.
