Great rendition.. closely parallels the Expanded Edition.. so close in fact one can only assume they were written in tandem. But the Junior Novel is a very decent and fun read. While it does miss a couple important plot points from Expanded Edition, it also adds a couple.
The one unconscionable and glaring problem with this version is the ridiculous decision to have Chewbacca speak English/Basic!! That is a major detail change... you might as well make Leia a rodian for crying out loud!

It is a great book for a young Star Wars fan. Violence tuned right down but still a gripping story. 'Short chapters for easy daily reading targets. Great for any kid moving from the early readers to real books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly basic but decent novelisation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 24, 2019
For a junior novelisation this grasps all the facets of the film remarkably well. Primarily orientated around the perspective of the lead character, it does a particularly good job of capturing the balance between that sense of wonder the young Solo exhibits as he ventures out into the galaxy and the innate cockiness he possess that he utilises to face his endeavours.

All the main characters are decently portrayed and loyal to their onscreen equivalents. There is little added to them or further developed as this novelisation sticks pretty close to the film.

A couple of minor characters occasionally receive a bit more attention. The most notable of these is actually a strange choice in being the summa-verminoth, the gargantuan, squid like creature that inhabits the maw. The summa-verminoth was little more than an obstacle to be overcome in the movie, but here we are given an insight into its psyche and an explanation of why and how it exists in what appears to be such an inhospitable place. It is an interesting and original look at an alien species and prides an intriguing interlude to the main events.

More importantly for the greater Star Wars universe due to his appearances in both ‘Rebels’ and ‘Rogue One’, is that Benthic, who does nothing more than stand around in the background in the film, receives a bit more attention. It isn’t much but it provides some insight into his character.

Otherwise a decent portrayal, the treatment of Chewbacca is somewhat disconcerting in one aspect, however. Rather than the usual approach of having Chewie’s vocalisations relayed through the translations/interpretations of others (exclusively Han in the case of ‘Solo’), the author has made the odd choice of presenting his speech in English text the same as the other characters. Undoubtedly this makes the job of writing for the character easier, but it just feels wrong and it takes away some of Chewie’s charm.

The novelisation includes a selection of shots from the film in a central section. Chronologically displayed, they basically relay key events.

Overall, a decent novelisation that, as it should, captures the style and atmosphere of the film.
