Hell's Heart: Prey, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Continuing the milestone 50th anniversary celebration of Star Trek - an epic new trilogy that stretches from the events of the Original Series movie The Search for Spock to The Next Generation!

When Klingon commander Kruge died in combat against James T. Kirk on the Genesis planet back in 2285, he left behind a powerful house in disarray - and a series of ticking time bombs: the Phantom Wing, a secret squadron of advanced Birds-of-Prey; a cabal of loyal officers intent on securing his heritage; and young Korgh, his thwarted would-be heir, willing to wait a Klingon lifetime to enact his vengeance.

Now, 100 years later, while on a diplomatic mission for the United Federation of Planets, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise are snared in the aged Korgh's trap - and thrust directly in the middle of an ancient conflict. But as Commander Worf soon learns, Korgh may be after far bigger game than anyone imagines, confronting the Federation-Klingon alliance with a crisis unlike any it has ever seen!

Very happy this was done as a 3 book series. The story kept me engaged the entire time. It was a challenge to read only in the sense that there was surprise and unpredictability. Some storylines are predictable and makes it boring to read. Also, with all of the star trek books I read I've always felt that the Tuvok character has been pushed to the back burner. I'm not sure if John Jackson Miller recognized this too or if it was just happenstance but Tuvok was folded into the main storyline and it's what I've been waiting for.

Awesome books...was sad to see it end

Fascinating premise that focuses on one of the Federation's staunchest allies. Further proof that the decisions you make today have far reaching consequences.

It is interesting how they can go back and resurrect characters who have died or did they? This story takes from the Rath of Kahn and weaves a new story which courses over a 100 years to Riker and Picard working as Admiral and Captain. It is good to see them both in actions again. The main character, is he acting or his stooge or perhaps both. This is a good read as it puts the Federation in between the rock and the hard place. Martoc has faith in the federation, but he is being pressured to rethink this misguided faith or face Lords down and keep his grip on the Empire. He will be tested and so will Riker and Picard.. I am already reading the 2nd book in the series and it did not skip a beat from the first. I believe this is another 3 part series. I know it has to end in favor of Martoc and the Federation, but how that happens is yet to be determined. Oh did I mention Kahless?

This book started out a little unbelievable. The star fleeters get crushed by aliens using better technology. The book got a little better. It actually turned out to be a decent thriller.

As a long time Trek fan, I will admit that the Next Gen era novels had lost my interest in the years after Keith R.A DeCandido's excellent Gorkon series. I have satiated my Trek addiction with the Vanguard and Seekers series lately. But I am a fan of John Jackson Miller's writing from his days in the comic biz, and his savvy writing style with the Star Wars Rebels characters in A New Dawn had me sold on his ability to add depth to characters we have already met while introducing complex villains.

Hell's Heart did not disappoint in this. In fact the wheels within wheels elements of the narrative pull the reader along at a frantic pace as they move from one shocking discovery to the next in pace with the characters.

Miller's understanding of the Klingon psyche and his nods to the works and additions of authors and actors past make the book all the more enjoyable, and the political edge to the story rivals that of the late Tom Clancy. The motivations of the characters are multi-dimensional, the actions are believable and thrilling, and the pace of the story makes the complexity a joy to watch unfold.

Moreover, Miller has convinced me to give a second look at some characters and stories I took a deliberate pass on over the last few years. He made the characters from Titan jump off the page in a way I did not remember in my first reads of it. And the Typhon Pact series plays into the story enough to pique my interest in revisiting that saga.

Any fan of of the Klingon Empire should be honor bound to read this series, to alternatively bless and curse its author, and to collapse in a bloodied, exhausted but satisfied heap at the end.

The storyline is intriguing, however, its execution is somewhat off. The author does not have that good a grasp on the personalities of these very familiar and well-established characters. He is also a little sloppy with StarTrek canon...at one point he describes a Klingon crying, when the movies and television series both revealed that Klingons do not have tear ducts. I'll be interested to see if the author improves in book two.

This was my first book from John Jackson Miller, but it will not be my last. He did a great job with the story, the characters and rhythm. I won't go into detail with the plot, but I was highly entertained and intrigued. The carry over from one of the better ST:NG episodes was incredibly creative and thought provoking.

It was an easy read and very entertaining. I finished this book faster than average, simply because I wanted to know what would happen next!

Read a sample (Kindle users) and I think you'll be quickly hooked.

Sensational start for a wonderful trilogy that exploits the unstable dynamics of the Federation-Klingon relationship. The plot is complex and compeling, the characters are interesting an the action is roller-coster quality! The TOS interlude, with a bitter Kirk and merciful Spock is the best moment in this first volume.
