The Atlantis Ship
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
A legendary enemy attacks....
Galactic peace is threatened....
Unless one man can find and stop the Atlantis ship.
Carson Mach, a former war hero turned freelancer, seeks the biggest payday of his life when he's tasked to hunt down a ghost ship that has echoed through the centuries. The legendary Atlantis ship has become a reality, appearing at the Commonwealth frontier and obliterating an orbital station.
Facing a lack of resources, a ragtag crew, and aliens who want him dead, Mach must use all his leadership skills and experience if he's to beat the overwhelming odds. His mission will take him across the galaxy and to uncharted dark areas of space.
Failure to stop the Atlantis ship will mean not only the death of Mach and his crew but the end of the Commonwealth and all of humanity. Somehow Mach must find a way to solve an ancient mystery if he's to succeed where everyone else before him has failed.

The second arch of the story is what is happening in the admiralty, the politicos, and the back rooms of this part of the universe. Activities, actions, and plans that are at first confusing, and then truly evil appear. As they work their way out, we don't know who to trust, or what the agenda is for anyone. Neither group is aware of what is happening with the others' world until late in the book, and then, the true nefarious side of things comes out at the end.
As the book progresses, Mach starts out as a somewhat drunken, shady character, but as the action unfolds, we see more and more of his true character come out. He is a principled man, who thinks outside of the box, and is loyal to his motley crew to a fault. These traits unfold in a series of events, each one more dangerous and action packed than the last! Initially, his crew are flawed individuals, with pasts that are questionable at best. But each one finds their lives meshing into a workable, cohesive unit, even those who have worked together before. They find new things about themselves, and about each other.
Not a hard science book, The Atlantis Ship none-the-less has plenty of science that it uses - worm hole science, different drives, ion cannons, and lasers, but it doesn't overly depend on the details of any of these things. That allows the book to move along at a fast pace, giving the reader just enough information to make it plausible.
In the end, there is a sense of unfinishness about the book that is intentional because of the sequel value of the story. It just doesn't sit well that the second arch, with the politicians, isn't finished in a kinder, gentler way - but then, when do politicians take the high road?
There is a dark side to this affair, and unfinished business that the Atlantis Ship sets up; a coming war that they'll all face. But, with the ship in repair, the crew in repair, and the captain's story up in the air, all we can do is keep coming back to make sure that this rag-tag group can find their way. Great book.
The editor should probably be beaten for letting some of the awkward phrasing and grammatical errors get by. There are entire sentences that don't make sense, but for the most part you get the gist of it and 90% of the writing flows along mostly well.
The characters are great, more or less developed, and charming in their own way. I appreciated the efforts to create an anti-hero in the protagonist but those efforts were abandoned in favor of keeping the reader's opinions about the crew clear. Still, I definitely enjoyed discovering them even as they seemed a little familiar... And I didn't mind it.
The premise, the plot, the story... Nothing super innovative here but it works as a yarn, somewhat jumpy, a little rushed, faintly formulaic, the kind of story you don't mind reading but aren't exactly surprised by. So there's that: no surprises here but also, no disappointment either.
It's a decent start. Good enough to be enjoyable and good enough that I'll read the next one in hopes that the author will continue to develop and grow. I encourage any and all to give this book a try.
To the author: worry less about labeling things that don't matter. For example, the brand and model of the Kill-o-matic Instakill 2000 blaster. It's slightly reminiscent of Harry Harrison and his Bill the Galactic Hero series, but those were clearly intended as tongue in cheek. Keep it simple and concentrate on what they're doing and why. It's the future, after all. That being said, good job with this one, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work!

I have mixed feelings about the story. It actually is entertaining and there are a few characters in it with whom the reader can identify. Also some of the plot twists are interesting. I liked the first half of the book a lot, even the story was predictable and at some points felt like the description of a role playing/adventure game.
On the other hand, it is very poorly executed:
- The author has no grasp at all of the laws of physics. I am not talking about advanced orbital mechanics here or esoteric concepts like wormholes and FTL travel and communications, but things like preservation of momentum, the difference between acceleration and speed, transmission of sound in vacuum and other such basics. For me it was very distracting as it made it hard to understand some of the scenes and story lines as they went completely against how the real world works.
- The plot has more and bigger holes than a slab of swiss cheese not to mention the lack of logic in the second half of the story. (I won't go into detail as I try to avoid spoilers.)
- The book seems to have no copy editing at all, at least in the second half. Names change their spelling (Mach/Mack, Orloza/Orzola), the narration jumps between first and second names, making the story hard to follow, some sentences are only rudiments and there is a grab bag full of grammatical errors. I usually do not criticize such shortcomings but in this case they are so frequent that it got annoying.
So what is the bottom line? The author has some fresh approaches to old and tested concepts and clichés but lacks the experience and knowledge to really pull them off. The narrations stops short at some interesting points. The novel is by no means a space opera. If you want to read such a thing look at Peter F. Hamilton, Alistair Reynolds or Larry Niven. Those also understand the physics behind their stories, which helps the suspension of disbelieve in an environment with even more outrageous concepts than what Hadfield is cooking up here.
Having said this, I think the author has potential if he works on his weaknesses and trusts his readers to follow through with well written longer story arcs.
