Saboteur: Star Wars Legends (Darth Maul) (Short Story) (Star Wars: Darth Maul Book 1) Kindle Edition

A dazzling new short story featuring Darth Maul, merciless apprentice of evil . . .

On the distant planet Dorvalla, precious ore is mined by two competing companies: InterGalactic Ore and Lommite Limited. Neither rival suspects that they are central to a sinister plot masterminded by Darth Sidious, Lord of the Sith, himself.

Dispatched by Sidious on his very first solo mission, Darth Maul infiltrates Lommite Limited. There, his unique gifts of deception and subterfuge will set off an explosive chain of events that could destroy both companies, leaving them ripe for takeover by the Trade Federation. But a vengeful Lommite Limited Manager with his own thirst for retaliation against InterGal could blow Maul's cover--and all of Sidious's fiendishly layed plans . . .

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Star Wars: Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter.

This was a fantastic short story featuring Darth Maul. Set after the events in another of James Luceno's books, Cloak of Deception, Darth Sidious continues to arrange events to bring the Trade Federation in focus before the events in the Phantom Menace. Maul creates deceptions to arrange an outcome desired by Lord Sidious. As with all of Luceno's books, it expertly written, grabbing your attention and holding it until the very end. The only complaint is that it is too short, but sets up the next book, Darth Maul Shadow Hunter.

So I have to admit, Darth Maul is one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars universe and he just did not receive nearly enough attention in the Phantom Menace. That is why I am glad that the expanded universe has included a couple of volumes specific to him. Along with Darth Maul: Saboteur, there is  Shadow Hunter (Star Wars: Darth Maul)  and  Star Wars: Darth Maul, Edition# 1  (which takes place right after this one).

In this volume, we are taken to the world of Dorvalla, that has a highly sought after mineral. There are two competing mining companies that are looking for dominance: Intergalactic Ore and Lommite Limited (abbreviated LL throughout the book). Intergalactic has been sabotaging LL's ships and the recent one (closer to the beginning of the book) caused a lot of damage and enraged the CEO of the company. They make the decision to fight fire with fire, since going to the senate would be worthless. In comes Darth Maul, who is sent to make the situation favorable. The Sith are looking to set up a relationship with the Trade Federation, and this is a great way to do it. Without spoiling too much, the book is mostly espionage, both corporate and force wielding.

Keep in mind that this book is short. If it was printed, it would be under 100 pages. The storyline is not overly complicated, unlike some of the others in the expanded universe. There is not a whole lot of action, it's more subterfuge than anything else. It's a good, quick read. I didn't think it was as focused on Darth Maul as the title led me to believe but that is really my only "complaint". Good book and definitely worth the buck and a half.

This is not a jaw-dropping, revelation-filled, "I am your father" story by any means, but if you're looking for more Darth Maul action, this is a good read, and it's quick.

It was cool to see DM doing some stealth work instead of straight up slaughter. Reminded me of an 80's action flick.

This story also fills in some gaps in the EU. Not important ones, but when you read the book Darth Plagueis and you wonder what the heck Darth Sideous is referencing, well this is one of those things. Just read it already! :)

I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this short tale. I found it compelling and enjoyed the characterization, action, politics, and intrigue. It was pretty cool to see the Maul character roughed out a bit more. Such insight, when done well, is always exciting. Thanks to Mr. Luceno and all of the authors that worked on it. I also appreciate that there was no objectionable material. Peace out.

darth maul was my favorite character from the new star war movies so i try to read everything that i can that comes out about him. i was not disappointed in this one.personally i think they could have left him in the movies at least up until the second movie. i know he comes back in the animated series the clone wars but i'm not into cartoon characters so i don't watch it. but loved the book.

I'm editing my review because I was actually mistaken in something I said in it before. As others have said the story is very short, but also very well written and for the price I don't think you could do much better.
I actually just went out today and bought a Star Wars novel by the same author about Darth Vader and so far it's even better.
I'm not going to go over the plot or how short this tale is, as plenty of other reviews have already done that. I'm just throwing my own four star rating into the mix to help bump up his rating.

The story is well constructed and moves are a good pace but in the scheme of all things Star Wars it doesn't add anything new or needed

Saboteur is an OK short story that doesn't really add much to Darth Maul's character or the wider Star Wars universe. Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoyed reading it, and it's well written, but after I finished it (took me just under an hour I think) I didn't feel like anything of substance really happened.

Although this short story is often attached to Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, the two stories are not intertwined, so don't feel like you need to read Saboteur before Shadow Hunter.

If you're a big fan of Maul, then you'll probably enjoy the story, but it wasn't really of much interest to me.
