The first novel in a new trilogy starring veteran New Republic pilots!

On the brink of victory in a brutal war, five New Republic pilots transform from hunted to hunters in this epic
Star Wars adventure. Set after Return of the Jedi, Alphabet Squadron follows a unique team, each flying a different class of starfighter as they struggle to end their war once and for all.

The Emperor is dead. His final weapon has been destroyed. The Imperial Army is in disarray. In the aftermath, Yrica Quell is just one of thousands of defectors from her former cause living in a deserters’ shantytown—until she is selected to join Alphabet Squadron.

Cobbled together from an eclectic assortment of pilots and starfighters, the five members of Alphabet are tasked by New Republic general Hera Syndulla herself. Like Yrica, each is a talented pilot struggling to find their place in a changing galaxy. Their mission: to track down and destroy the mysterious Shadow Wing, a lethal force of TIE fighters exacting bloody, reckless vengeance in the twilight of their reign.

The newly formed unit embodies the heart and soul of the Rebellion: ragtag, resourceful, scrappy, and emboldened by their most audacious victory in decades. But going from underdog rebels to celebrated heroes isn’t as easy as it seems, and their inner demons threaten them as much as their enemies among the stars. The wayward warriors of Alphabet Squadron will have to learn to fly together if they want to protect the new era of peace they’ve fought so hard to achieve.

Part of a Marvel and Del Rey crossover event,
Alphabet Squadron is the counterpart to Marvel’s TIE Fighter miniseries, which follows the exploits of Shadow Wing as they scheme to thwart the New Republic.

I read the Kindle edition of this book.

4 ABY The Emperor and his henchman, Darth Vader, are dead. The Second Death Star was destroyed at the Battle of Endor. The Rebel Alliance has reformed itself into the New Republic, and are trying to clean up the remnants of the Imperial Navy.

Alphabet Squadron centers around Yrica Quell, a Tie pilot turned New Republic analyst, and four other New Republic pilots, as they try to take down the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing, i.e. the Shadow Wing.

Each member of our little band is here for a reason. Can Yrica put aside her Imperial tendencies and bring the Squadron together.

The Star Wars fandom was first introduced to Alexander Freed with Battlefront: Twilight Company, and then with the novelization of Rogue One. Alphabet Squadron follows these two books, and feels more like a war story set in a Star Wars galaxy. For that reason alone, this book is worth reading.

More important than that, this is the first in a trilogy, which will start to fill in some of the gaps between EP VI and VII.

Recommended.

This was a solid start start to a trilogy and I think it will get better further into the series. The characters are a little broad at the outset but come into better focus as the story (and Alphabet squadron itself) comes together. The action doesn't quite stack up to heights of old Rogue squadron series, but those were some of the very best EU novels, particularly for space combat. Still Freed does a good job creating excitement particularly in the climatic battle. Overall the biggest strength of this story though was the challenges the squadron had to overcome to act as one, that's ultimately what made it compelling to keep reading. Freed does nice job of imagining out what a seminal event the battle of Endor would have been for for both Rebels and Imperials alike.

Aside from a couple of the new Thrawn books (which given it's Zahn and his very favorite admiral feels very Legends anyway) this was my first foray into the Disney-era canon since consuming much of the EU as a teen. This is a solid entry and maybe a good way to get back into SW novels again if you've been away for a long time. I didn't feel embarrassed to be reading SW novels again even though I've spent a couple decades reading more mature SFF, I'm pretty sure some of the old EU stuff would be pretty cringey. This wasn't.

Why did I like Rogue One so much? And to some extent, Solo? No space wizards or force wielders… The Star Wars galaxy needs more stories about regular dudes. The men and women in the trenches, gun-wells, and cockpits. The complicated heroes and, not so heroic characters, who fight on both sides. The Force is discussed in passing in the novel as junk science, fake news, hocus pocus… nothing these rank soldiers ever deal with.

The stories of Yrica Quell, Nath Tensent, and Adan Caern. Each drawn to the rebellion for different reasons. Yrica is a recent defector who switched sides after the Empire’s first counter attack after Endor. She’s seen too much of the cruelty and decides it may be time to use her knowledge to help the Rebellion. Nath has a bit of Han Solo in him. He’s content to make his money on a little out-of-the-way station after his own defection. Adan is the organizer of the Alphabet Squadron, and it isn’t too clear about what motivates him to serve. But they all gravitate towards a common goal: Vengence.

The core story arc focuses on the formation of a new squadron in order to hunt down an elite fleet of Tie Fighters. The 204th is still out there doing the dead Emperor’s dirty work.

I’ve got a list of things I loved:

1. A fully fleshed-out cast of five pilots. What brought them to the rebellion… and what are their motivations to join the Alphabet Squadron?

2. Space dog fights… a plethora of different ships… A, B, Y, X, U- Wings!

3. Favorite Quote: ‘… but there was truth to the idea that the Empire valued squadrons and the Rebellion valued pilots.’

4. Some excellent cameos from past SW stories. I don’t want to give up any spoilers, but I think Freed does a great job integrating some less-heralded characters into the mix.

5. The last battle. I was riveted for the last quarter of the book. Most of my favorite SW films and novels come down to a creative battle plan.. and there’s a distinct difference between a Rebel plan and an Imperial plan. Freed shows that difference, proves it on every page.

6. New droids. In the first chapter, we meet an Imperial interrogation droid named IT-O who has been reprogramed into a psychologist of sorts for the defectors. And a couple new X-Wing mechs to help out in the midst of battle… also, a straight-up eerie dark side robot…

7. Storytelling: Every character is given a chance to tell his/her story, and Freed’s storytelling changes nicely between the confessional or disinformational spills…

Highly Recommended for those looking for a multi-layered exploration into the grunts of the Star Wars universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, alot in it
Reviewed in Canada on December 22, 2020
Great book, a bit longer then most of the other cannon novels at 500+ pages, but a great story of 5 different rebels from different backgrounds becoming a squad together. Its a well told story that makes you want to keep reading, and covers alot of ground/planets/missions. its the type of book to have them talking about a idea for mission, then next paragraph they are out on the mission, great non-stop story. The only draw back i noticed was that there is alot of names in the first half of the book, whole squadrons of names that a few pages later no longer matter at all, combinded with all the names of places the missions go, and some ships names. I read books at work in down time, so especially after a day or 2 off work and mind off the book, its hard to remember all those names. But this is none-the-less one of my favorite of all the canon books i have read so far, and i am already into the sequal book: "shadow fall". The characters are great. I recommend.
