Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.

Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.

As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.

To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.

Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

Took me by surprise!
This book took me by surprise. It was a quick psychological read that had me on the edge of my seat with suspense. Buddy read with @book.lover_jams and enjoyed our discussions as usual 🤗Two sisters Wren and Sage raised in a cabin off the grid and isolated are worried sick about their mother and youngest sister Evie. They had left to get Evie medical treatment and never returned. Now months later they are now living in fear of what next, where is their mom? Where is their sister? What will they do to survive? The twists were unexpected and I loved the characters! Wren was one of a kind 🫶🏻

I'm in a book club and am supposed to be in chapter 5. I'm however on chapter 18 at this point. The chapters are short and it's practically impossible to put down. I'm not big on thrillers, but this story is fantastic. These poor girls who live life, it seems, from days of Little House on the Prairie, we learn about as the book goes, but every other chapter is about the poor sisters, then every other chapter is of a wealthy suspicious wife (and questionable husband) whose wish has always been to have children. The three meld together at some point later on (I'm not that far yet). The first words of the first chapter introduce us to the poor sisters and hooked me immediately. The auther knows how to write and write extremely well, jotting all the right moves to hook a reader and keep the reader as we go.

This was an easy, quick read. There are two intertwining story lines and while it starts slow there were many unexpected events and revelations. The final chapter, almost an epilogue, is superfluous and the book may have been better without it.

Loved the story! I knew the characters would all be intertwined somehow but not in the way it had happened. This book had me turning the pages so fast! I loved the ending...only thing I wish was to hear a little more about how Wren felt meeting her biological family member. Otherwise...beautiful story! A top 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this year!

This book kept me interested from the beginning. When the storyline began to materialize, it became even more spellbinding. Although the ending was somewhat predictable, it still held surprises. The only criticism would be that at the end, the author dropped the storyline regarding Wren's aunt and Sage's family, leaving the reader wondering...

I would have rated this 3.5 but that is not an option. It is better than a 3 but not quite a 4. However, I did enjoy reading it so I gave it a 4.

This was a decent psychological suspense novel that focuses around two different groups of people. The novel switches between two of the protagonists, Nicolette and Wren. The author does a good job illustrating the surrounding community and supporting characters. I enjoyed this book but felt it was slightly anti-climatic. However, it was an exciting read that kept me turning the pages wanting answers.

MINOR SPOILER ALERT:
Wren is the oldest of three sisters that live in a VERY primitive cabin in the woods. Her slightly younger sister Sage is 18 and their youngest sister Evie is 7. The story begins from Wren’s perspective explaining how Mama has taken Evie to town because she was sick. The two older girls have never left the cabin area and were told not to go into the woods. We learn early on that Mama has lied to the girls about civilization but we don’t know why early on. Nicolette is a likeable woman married to a man who she thinks is having an affair or possibly fathered a child with another woman. She goes to great lengths to determine the reality of her husband. Of course everyone in the story is connected. Finding out those connections is the fun part.

I would suggest this to those who like Psychological suspense or thrillers. It is not the best, but it is exciting and keeps you turning pages to get answers.

I liked the early chapters that dealt with the isolated forest girls who believed that only evil and moral and political collapse lay beyond the forest, where they must never go. And mom the nutty survivalist. Yes I know such paranoics exist. And Wren, the oldest girl, is a pretty good character as she confronts and awakens to the world she never knew existed. But the concluding chapters seemed too beyond-belief to me. Can a woman really have her baby taken from her and not realize it? Perhaps? And once she was told the truth about her lost child it was pretty evident that Evie would turn out to be that child. Hardly a surprise. An easy read with short chapters and some good spots but an all-too-neat Hollywood ending that just didn't work for me.

I love a book that has a twist I don’t see coming and this gave me exactly that!

It was a quick and easy read that kept me hooked all the way through.
A friend and I read it together and we even said multiple times that there wasn’t a good stopping point because the story just kept evolving.

A couple of plot holes that bugged me a bit but not enough to drop it a star.

Definitely a recommended read!

Two different stories running side by side and the way they converge I didn't expect it. I liked the book because it wasn't like anything I've read before, most thrillers these days sound the same.
