Solid Conclusion to Phase II

Solid Conclusion to Phase II
This was a solid conclusion to Phase II that once again focused on the most memorable characters of Phase II, Maria Ro and the Path of the Open Hand. I did feel that the story wasn’t as tight as Path of Deceit and the battle that was portrayed so thrillingly in the adult novel, Cataclysm, is seen through different eyes and just doesn’t have the same impact. The demise of a certain character was a bit anticlimactic. None of the new characters introduced in this novel made much of an impression on me. Solid but, looking forward to moving on to Phase III.

The High Republic Phase II has been more solid than much of Phase I. While there is an overabundance of books and comics aimed at youth, young adults and adults, the majority of the series is YA based. Phase II has a much more coherent story that began with Convergence, the audio drama the Battle for Jedha and Cataclysm, the series ends with this book Path of Vengeance. There are a number of authors who write for the series and some are stronger than others. I miss the legends days when one author could do a trilogy. Cavan Scott is the finest writer in the new canon series. The Rising Storm was the best book in Phase I and this book is excellent. It's supposed to be YA, but adults will enjoy it. Scott weaves a tight narrative that moves quickly and ties many of the storylines up. While Cataclysm focused on the larger conflict from Eiram and Eronoh, the aftermath of the Jedha conflict and the big battle on Dalna, this book focuses mainly on the Path of the Open Hand, the cult that hates the Jedi and the two cousins Marda and Yana Ro. Each has a journey to undertake and lessons to be learned. There are Jedi who become involved as well and to mention too much would give the story away. Some people learn hard truths and others get what they deserve. An excellent book. I wish Scott would have more of them.
Emily O'Brien does an great job with narration, her voice clear and concise.

"Path of Vengeance" is the final entry of The High Republic’s Phase II, concluding this stage of the story before readers are whisked back to the “future” setting of Phase I and the upcoming Phase III. The good news? It’s about as strong and compelling a wrap-up to the chapter as one could hope for, with author Cavan Scott nicely balancing the innate storytelling requirements that come with concluding a multi-book narrative with the oh-so-particular necessities accompanying any self-contained story. He also manages to wrap up most, if not all, of the lingering subplots and character arcs that have been built up since “Path of Deceit” (the first book of Phase II) in ways that feel genuinely earned and well-thought out – a not insignificant task. Good, good stuff.

Bring on Phase III.

Path of Vengeance is the latest book in the early High-Republic era novels. It is a follow-up to the novels Path of Deceit and Battle of Jedha. This book brings back the characters of Marda and Yarna Ro (one of whom is likely the mother of the leader of the Nihil, who are the main antagonists of the later High-Republic era) who are essentially on opposite sides of a civil war in the Path of the Open Hand.

In this book, the Path retreats to the planet Dalna. The Mother throws The Herald under the bus for the violence on Jedha and dispatches a team to Planet X to get more Leveler eggs so that she can have an army of Levelers to fight the Jedi. The Jedi track down the Path just as the team returns with the eggs, and another battle ensues.

The book is one of the longer young-adult novels. It is just over 500 pages, but it is a fairly easy read and the story flows very well. I am a fast reader and got through it in about five hours. The book brings a conclusion to the novels that were set before it and provides a good reset point from which to bridge the two eras of the High Republic. It is definitely one of the canon novels that you should read if you only read some, but not all, of the novels.

I'm not taken with The High Republic like some of the reviewers here (I won't even be continuing onto phase 3) but I've read all of the adult, young adult novels and two kids books in phase one and two. This book and Convergence have been the best novels of both phases in my opinion, both having engaging stories and relatable characters that kept me wanting to read more instead of wanting to finish it and move on to another book.

"Star Wars The High Republic Path of Vengeance" is a young adult novel by Cavan Scott. The story intersects with the other material that chronicles the battle of Dalna, such as "Cataclysm" and at some point "Quest for Planet X" as you can read on those reviews.

This time it's the story of Marda Ro and her return to Dalna, the encounters with Alecia "the Mother" and the simultaneous path that Jedi Padawan Matthea "Matty" Cathley takes along with Jedi Knight Olivia Zeveron, both protagonists of "The High Republic" Marvel comic series, also penned by Cavan Scott.

On Dalna, Marda Ro must walk a tight rope balancing her future with the Path of the Open Hand, and her individual future. She starts seeing all the preparations for an all-out war against the Jedi that has driven the Mother and the entire Path into a belligerent path, along with her cousin Yana Ro.

As part of that journey, Marda enlists herself in a dangerous mission to Planet X, the fabled home of the nameless creatures that turn Jedi into ash statues. She will survive but with a great cost.

Upon her return, the battle begins in Dalna and chaos erupts when several teams of Jedi arrive on the planet, until a tremendous revelation shows the true nature and purpose of the Mother.

And Marda will take the only remaining path, so to speak. To the stars.

The novel is fantastic and finally gives closure to one of the strangest eras. There are a couple of things still belonging to Phase II of The High Republic, but this is the final main link before Phase III starts in the final quarter of 2023.

Highly recommended if you've been following the High Republic initiative.

Excellent from beginning to end. I've become a big fan of Cavan Scott's Star Wars work across both the High Republic novels and comics. This novel didn't fail to impress. Perfect mix of action, suspense, and drama, with great emotional beats to boot. Loved it!
