Now a New York Times best-seller!

Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic!

Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age sixteen, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She’s been charged with supervising twelve-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon.

But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon’s droid J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador’s son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest….

"Rich internal third-person dialogue reveals dollops of inner turmoil for each character at key moments as well as providing some much-needed world-building to make this a winning choice. A great read for Star Wars fans young and old." -- Kirkus Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Before Skywalker, the clone wars, and the empire, Jedi Knights worked with the force to guard peace and justice. This new series is set in the High Republic, an optimistic and noble time before the fall of the Jedis. In this novel, readers meet four young characters: the inventive and rebellious daughter of a senator, a young padawan, an exemplary teen Jedi, and the son of an ambassador. Aboard a luxurious ship, the Steady Wing, the Ambassador of Dalnan and representatives from the Republic plan on traveling through hyperspace to discuss the Dalnans joining the Republic for safety and security. What begins as an exciting adventure to build the Republic turns into a catastrophe when the ship is sabotaged. For these four young space travelers, their trip is turned upside down. Landing on a moon where the near-constant rain burns everything it touches and there's a new enemy at every turn, they are challenged in more ways than they could have expected. Ireland writes a compelling story for young readers who want to explore a new chapter in the "Star Wars" saga. Readers will love the unique personalities of these fresh characters and will eagerly await the next title. VERDICT An engaging adventure for young "Star Wars" fans, and a great introduction for new visitors to the galaxy far, far away.Julie Jesernik, Warrenville P.L., ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Justina Ireland Tells a Great Story for a Middle Grade Book.
A Test of Courage ReviewAt first, I didn’t want to pick this book up because it was a middle grade book. I decided to read it now because Wave 2 of The High Republic is coming out later this month. I was not disappointed. Because this book is meant for children (as are most SW books) there is a limit as to how big of a story an author is able to write. I did not expect the story to have galactic level of consequences. It’s a story about Jedi kids and their friends developing their character after a pretty dark tragedy. Vernestra Rwoh is a very talented Jedi Knight and she’s very mature for being 16 years old. Her maturity is shown through her actions and her words. Justina did a great job of not telling the reader Vernestra is wise but showing it throughout the story. The other kids also show a lot of talent, even the ones who are not Jedi. Avon for example is very good with technology. They also all have personal struggles which I personally believe is great to show in middle grade books. The way Justina talks about the force reminds me a lot of Gui-Gon Jinn and his stoic approach to understanding the force. There are some great lessons that a kid can get while reading this book. Realizing that everyone will have bad days and it is important to not let those negative emotions get to you in those times is one of the great lessons in this book. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend if you truly like Star Wars.Misconceptions about the book by people online.I will just add this to the review because I have seen too much misinformation about this book and also the author. I have seen many 1-star reviews for this book saying it’s woke. Most of these reviews (not all, but most) come from non-Verified purchasers who clearly never read the book because they only leave a one sentence or at times one-word reviews. This is also true of other High Republic books. These reviews provide no plot details or parts of the story they didn’t like. They just repeat the same things they hear online from a certain group of people. If you, the one reading this review really want to consider yourself an independent thinker, at the very least pick up the books and read them for yourself before you decide to just leave a 1-star review on a product you never consumed. I don’t expect everyone to like what I like, but it is important to not go out of your way to express your dislike for things you have not even consumed let alone harass others who have consumed it and like it. 5 Stars for A Test of Courage.

A test of courage is a short story about a newly promoted Jedi Knight named Venestra Rwoh, who is given her first assignment to supervise a young inventor on a luxury starliner that is traveling to a space station called Starlight Beacon, that was opened after the hyperspace disasters. She is unique in that she was promoted to a full Jedi knight at the age of fifteen., so she is powerful, but still has teenage insecurities, which I think makes her a more interesting character. The ship is sabotaged by the Nihil, who have been the main antagonists of the High Republic novels, and Venestra becomes stranded on a moon with a Jedi Padawan whose master was killed in the first encounter with the Nihil, a couple of civilians, and a droid. The group has to survive not only the dangers of the moon itself but the threat posed by the Nihil.

As most probably know, the junior novels and the young-adult novels are really telling ancillary stories to the main adult novels. They generally introduce some different characters or involve a side-mission that is tied into the main story, in this case, the conflict with the Nihil but is not as involved as the adult novels get. To that end, this is a good, but not great story. It is definitely more of a kid's book, but that does not mean adults cannot enjoy it. There is a bit less violence in it than the "main" canon novels have but there is still a lot of action in it (relative to how long the book is). The author also finds a way to incorporate the dark side of the force without it being in the Jedi vs. Sith context that has been in most of the novels, tv series, and movies. The Nihil make for good bad guys that present a challenge to the Jedi without being force users themselves. The book is relatively short, just over 200 pages, so it makes for a fairly quick read. While I do not think it is a book that most are likely to read over and over, it is a good short story ancillary to the main storyline.

The kiddie cover art is a bit misleading. This is some quality Star Wars content here.

For one, this is geared towards Middle-Grade readers, but the story itself is written at a Young Adult level, so it will be enjoyable for readers of all ages. The character work here is fantastic, far better than what we get in Soule's 'Light of the Jedi'. Unlike Soule's work, this novel has a strong focus on the people in it and the worldbuilding (or in this case, utilizing much of the established Star Wars lore from Legends and the Disney Canon) without it going overboard or overtaking the narrative.

Veenstra and the rest of the cast are well portrayed, well realize, and have distinctive personalities that set them apart. The story is character-driven, which I enjoyed a lot.

It's a nice setup for the Republic Era and I'm more than onboard to see how these characters will develop and influence the Star Wars canon.

Whenever I read a young adult or junior novel, I have to step back and remember one key sentence: I am not the target audience for this book. However, that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy them. Justina Ireland's A Test of Courage stands at the top of the pack of Star Wars junior novels.

While Light of the Jedi introduced readers to the The High Republic Era for the first time and focused on galaxy-wide events, A Test of Courage drops down to focus on a single story featuring a Jedi prodigy (Vernestra Rwoh), a padawan full of doubts (Imri Cantaros), an ambassador's son (Honesty Weft), and a mischievous-yet-brilliant 12 year old scientist/inventor (Avon Starros).

Of course, the Nihil are here, too.

After an attack strands our four heroes on a forested moon (No, not that one.), they must work together to not only save themselves but also overcome their Nihil attackers. Do they succeed? Well, it's the first junior novel in The High Republic Era, and it's almost a certainty that these four characters will show up again in the future... So, I'll let you figure that one out for yourself.

Ireland does a a great job in developing two of the characters (Imri and Avon); however, I felt like the other two (Vernestra and Honesty) received the short end of the stick here. I'm most disappointed about Vernestra, because I was really excited to learn more about the 16 year old Jedi Knight. While there was some development for her, I didn't feel that it was strong enough for a character that I wan to see a lot more of going forward.

Speaking of Avon... She is an ancestor of Sana Starros who was introduced in the main Star Wars comic for Marvel and has since appeared in the Doctor Aphra comic series and Daniel Jose Older's book Last Shot. It's nice to get these little connections to the Star Wars era that everyone knows.

The Nihil were not overwhelmingly present in this book. In fact, only two characters even make an appearance, and they're rather forgettable; however, we may been introduced to one of the Nihil who will be our "big bad" of the junior novels toward the end of A Test of Courage. It would've been nice to see her sprinkled more throughout the book, but I did enjoy the tease of more to come.

Overall, I'm pleased with what this book turned out to be, and while it doesn't advance the overall period forward, A Test Of Courage does work to shrink this period down to a more personal story. I think kids that love Star Wars will love this book. For Star Wars completionists, it's a junior novel that you can get through quickly, and it tells a fun and kind of unpredictable story.
