The marketing for this book really gave away the main event this story focuses on. Because I knew what was going to happen to Starlight Beacon, my expectations for this book went down a little. I thought it would take away the element of surprise. Little did I know Claudia Gray had many more surprises lined up for this story.
A lot happened in this book I did not expect. I learned quite early in this series that these authors are not exactly scared to kill of some of the likable characters. Even with that in mind, I was still surprised some characters were killed of this early in the era. So far, most of these deaths have served a purpose to develop certain characters and I do trust that will be the case with the characters we lose in this story.
Claudia is very good at writing character’s emotional struggles. This book is no exception. There has been some emotional tension in some characters building up in the first two novels and in this book, Claudia does a great job at pointing it out and bringing things full circle. We learn more things about Stellan Gios that make perfect sense given his behavior in previous stories. Elzar Mann’s struggle continues and although he makes progress, he still has ways to go. Of course, Bell Zettifar’s loss of his previous master has affected him and that plays a huge role in the way he behaves and the choices he makes. It was all very well written.
The ending left me thinking about how these writers will keep the story going. I honestly do not know where The High Republic will go from here but I am very excited for it.
The one criticism I do have of this book has more to do with the lack of focus we get on a certain character. In The Rising Storm we are introduced to a creature that seemed pretty terrifying to the Jedi. That creature makes multiple appearances in this book. However, we do not learn much about it. There is very little focus on it and by the end of the book this creature feels pretty dispensable. I do believe that was a somewhat missed opportunity. I still overall loved this book. Claudia Gray pretty much never disappoints. I would give it a 4.5/5

YA Strengths and Weaknesses
This story fell a bit short as it lacked the scope of the previous adult novels. Love the character development, particularly of the crew of “The Vessel” and the new partnership of padawans Bell Zettifar and the Wookiee Burryaga. Missing was a greater sense of galactic politics, especially considering the aftermath of the previous disaster, as well as any meaningful involvement of Avar Kris, who was so prominent in the opening novel. Solid read but not one of Claudia’s best.
