After the thrilling events of The High Republic: Convergence, the Jedi race to confront the Path of the Open Hand and end the Forever War.

After five years of conflict, the planets Eiram and E’ronoh are on the cusp of real peace. But when news breaks of a disaster at the treaty signing on Jedha, violence reignites on the beleaguered worlds. Together, the royal heirs of both planets—Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A’lbaran—working alongside the Jedi, have uncovered evidence that the conflict is being orchestrated by outside forces, and all signs point to the mysterious Path of the Open Hand, whom the Jedi also suspect of causing the disaster on Jedha.

With time—and answers—in short supply, the Jedi must divide their focus between helping quell the renewed violence on Eiram and E’ronoh and investigating the Path. Among them is Gella Nattai, who turns to the one person she believes can unravel the mystery but the last person she wants to trust: Axel Greylark. The chancellor’s son, imprisoned for his crimes, has always sought to unburden himself of the weight of his family name. Will he reconcile with the Jedi and aid in their quest for justice and peace, or embrace the Path’s promise of true freedom?

As all roads lead to Dalna, Gella and her allies prepare to take on a foe unlike any they’ve ever faced. And it will take all of their trust in the Force, and in one another, to survive.

“While part of a larger story, Cataclysm has all the traits of the best Star Wars books—courageous Jedi, fearsome villains, and love powerful enough to change the fate of the galaxy.”Dork Side of the Force

“Lydia Kang delivers a High Republic masterpiece. . . . Happy and sad tears will drip from your face onto the pages, but the heart of
Cataclysm is as pure as Star Wars can be. The fight for survival, love, and a future fuels a book that will leave your heart racing.”Star Wars News Net

“Cataclysm is definitely the must-read climactic finale of this arc.”Laughing Place

Enjoyable Action But Lots of Questions
Overall, I enjoyed this book and its focus on various Jedi groups coming together with other allies in a battle against the Path of the Open Hand. The character interactions are the highlight, including the first time (to my knowledge) that Yaddle is an actual (minor) character and she and Yoda have a cool force power moment. However, I have a lot of questions. The Path of the Open Hand has seemingly evolved overnight from a relatively small sect whose membership consisted of “mostly-peaceful” farmer-types who handed out flowers and preached gifts freely given to a literal army of hundreds murmurous zealots with advanced weaponry and martial skills. When did that happen? And, we continue to be denied any real knowledge of the Path’s greater motives and what the goal is for creating chaos and promoting continue warfare between Eiram and E’ronoh. It’s unclear if the battle that takes place was purposely set in motion or just something that arose by accident. Did the Leveler generate progeny or were more eggs brought in from Planet X (or wherever). Finally, who’s on the jacket cover? I’m honestly scratching my head to figure out who the character on the cover is supposed to be: Axel Greylark? Fun but, not sure if this really advanced the overall plot of Phase I that much.

Phase II of the High Republic has been exploring the origins of the villainous Nihil - a collection of bloodthirsty pirates attacking the Republic. 150 years before Phase I, the Nihil have their beginnings in the cult the Path of the Open Hand. They portray themselves as peace-loving (and many cultists are), but they have the philosophy that the "Force must be free", as in not used by Force-sensitives like the Jedi. As the Path get more aggressive and violent under the leadership of a grifter called Mother, they have begun to meddle in galactic affairs, sparking riots and keeping wars continuing. Clearly their philosophy and increasing violence means confrontation is inevitable with the Jedi Order. As several Jedi travel to the Path's stronghold on the planet Dalna, they do not know what awaits them. For the Path has a terrifying weapon to use against the Jedi, the Nameless. Lots of action and emotional scenes with characters we've come to know in Phase II. Even get to see Yaddle in action! This novel is concluding some long running plot arcs in Phase II, so it's not a book to pick up as an entry point into the High Republic.
Recommended for Star Wars fans.

This was a great read!

The High Republic series two has been somewhat uneven. I didn't care for the first book, Path of Deceit, liked Convergence, even though it was convoluted, loved the audio drama the Battle for Jedha and now Cataclysm. This is the strongest book of the wave II series. More streamlined than Convergence, yet gives a broader view of the conflict between the warring worlds, the Path of the Open Hand and Closed Fist and the greater galaxy. I liked the fact that this book had an ending where we able to visit a number of locations at appropriate times and there was great characterizations. Xiri and Phan-to had meaningful discussions about their relationship as well as Axel finally learning a hard lesson. He and Gella still need to get together. The mother made herself known as well.

The issue for me was with the portrayal of the Jedi, especially when fighting. The High Republic Jedi seem to be not as bright and not the fearsome fighters they are. Jedi in the Old Republic could really kick butt and had incredible powers. The Jedi in the High Republic tend to get hurt and limited use of their Force powers. I miss the Sith as protagonists for the epic saber battles and ideological fights about how to use the Force. We do get some of the latter here. March Thompson is superb as usual on audiobook. Overall this is the best High Republic book since the Rising Storm.

Now THIS is what I’m talking about.

I’ll be honest: overall, I haven’t loved Phase 2 of “The High Republic” initiative as much as I’ve wanted to (particularly in comparison to Phase 1). Whereas the first phase had 3 “waves” of titles (and about 1.5 years to tell its story), Phase 2 has only consisted of 2 waves, the majority of which have been released in about 9-10 months. The result has been a story that has been entertaining book-to-book, but also felt a bit lacking when compared to its predecessor.

That being said, Lydia Kang’s “Cataclysm” proves that good stories don’t necessarily exist in vacuums, and sometimes – when handled correctly - can even serve to improve upon past narrative mistakes. Featuring propulsive plotting, payoffs to character arcs that have been built up over 3 previous novels, and an ending that genuinely hits emotionally, “Cataclysm” is that oh-so-rare thing: a “Star Wars” novel that feels genuinely moving on its own terms, while ALSO serving as a terrific cap to an (admittedly) flawed story. It doesn’t redeem some of the missteps of Phase 2, but as both a conclusion to this phase AND a tee-up to Phase 3, “Cataclysm” is about as good as a “Star Wars” fan could hope for.

A very good book. This book continues straight from the Battle of Jedha. In fact, the first couple of chapters run alongside that book from a different point of view.

The Path of the Open Hand has been interfering in the peace talk between the planets Eiram and E'ronoh for a while now. Always in the background and always silencing any anybody how can lead to them. However, some are starting to join the dots, but are they just being pulled into a bigger deadlier trap?

My favourite things about this book are seeing some of my favourite High Republic characters again, like Gella Nattai, Master Creighton Sun, Masters Yoda, and Yaddle. Also, I have felt the Jedi in the Fusney era are a bit water down compared to the Legonds/EU versions, but her they are shown as the awesome warriors they should be. Their never stop fighting till they have saved everyone or died trying to give me goose bumps. I like the redemption side story. The realism to the horrors of war is shown very well. Also, I like how they show the people at the top of the cults really only care about themselves and what is in it for them.

The only complaint I had about this book is that it was too slow till about halfway through. I do understand why this was needed. There is a lot to cover and lots of different characters and clues to follow. I would love to read more about the saviour's of this book. I think there are a lot more stories to tell.
