Excellent story with great characters, and the “history” part was expertly woven in. The ending was definitely surprising, but like the rest of the book, I found it interesting and satisfying. Overall a nice easy read that kept me interested. I look forward to reading the other books in the series, and have also purchased the Berlin Butterfly series.

What I liked about this story was it was told from a completely different perspective. Typically these stories lean heavily towards anti Nazi and pro Allied forces. This was not the case with all the characters and the author did a very good job of handling the delicacy, although surely truthful feelings for some, on the subject. It certainly makes for interesting reading to try to see things from another's viewpoint.

In the first few chapters I was about ready to give up reading this book…. Felt there was way to much time/ words spent on traveling in truck, accident and wandering. Then the book literally “took off” and I could barley put it down. I found it very interesting how Ethnic views were interwoven in the lives of the people involved, how the loyalty of the German people to Hitler allowed them to be blind to the atrocities of the war. Overall this was a good read once you get past the slow first few chapters.

A few years ago I read the Berlin Butterfly Series and loved it. Recently, I learned the author wrote a prequel about Ella's mom. The period is World War 2 and the journey Ella's mom (Aleksandra) must go through after being taken from her home in Poland. For those of us who have read the series, the ending of this book makes perfect sense. It all comes together and is one of the best series I've read.

They are being transported to Germany because they all have blond hair and blue eyes and unbeknownst to any of them, to take part in the Third Reich’s programme of having children for the so called pure race. What transpires is a story that makes the point that there are no winners in any war and through Aleksandra’s eyes, we see determination and strength of character can overcome all obstacles.

I truly enjoyed this story.
