Product Description
A new Mario Tennis game is bringing a new level of skill and competition to the Nintendo Switch system. Mario steps onto the court in classy tennis garb for intense rallies against a variety of characters in full-blown tennis battles. New wrinkles in tennis gameplay will challenge your ability to read an opponent's position and stroke to determine which shot will give you the advantage. And this time the game adds the first story mode since the Mario Tennis game on the Game Boy Advance system, offering a new flavor of tennis gameplay, with a variety of missions, boss battles and more. Up your game with Zone Speed and Zone Shot Unleash an arsenal of shots and strategies in all-out tennis battles with friends, family, and fan-favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters. Whether you play locally, online or using simple motion controls, intense rallies await! In Adventure mode, experience a new favor of tennis gameplay, with a variety of missions, boss battles and more. Complete missions and boss battles in Adventure mode while mastering the controls. Test your hard-earned skills in singles or doubles with up to 4 players in local or online multiplayer, not to mention Tournament Mode, which lets you challenge the CPU. Store up energy and use it to pull off amazing feats: move so fast the world slows down around you or aim in first-person to send the ball crashing down! Your rivals may attempt to block you, but if they fail, their racket will take damage—and break after three hits. Fully charge your energy to launch the ball with enough force to KO your opponent! Additional accessories may be required for multiplayer mode. Sold separately. Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online play. Not available in all countries. Internet access required for online features. Terms apply.

1.) Adventure Mode - This is the "story mode" which you can progress through to unlock courts. It's amusing, and definitely helped me practice my Mario Tennis skills. Whenever I would get stuck on a certain challenge, I had the option to go between different modes so I was never bored.
2.) Tournament Mode (Online vs. COM) - The COM tournament was exactly what I was looking for, and what I missed from Mario Tennis for the Wii U. I enjoyed progressing through the COM tournament. The online tournament's match-making is broken, but still fun to work through if you are stuck in another area of the game.
3.) Free Play - This is pretty much what is expected from a semi-party game. I've played the online free play with friends and locally with my husband, and it seemed to work just fine (aside from the online play being a little confusing to navigate).
There are new mechanics to get the hang of, but with a lot of practice and improving your reaction time, it's definitely a fun game. I am not sure what others expected from a Mario Tennis game aside from what they provided. It definitely exceeded my expectations.
I would recommend this for any Mario Tennis enthusiast. I grew up with Mario Tennis for the N64 and it definitely lives up to that.
The Adventure mode is a welcome addition (although limited) and I recommend all new players play the Adventure mode prior to heading into the Online Tournament because the Adventure mode teaches the player how to execute the new moves/gameplay additions. The Online Tournament is truly where this game shines and it was encouraging to see Nintendo add additional characters each month post-release to give players something to look forward to.
The only negative I have is that there are 4 characters that are incredibly cheap and overpowered compared to the rest (I'm looking at you Chain Chomp, Piranha Plant, Boo, Waluigi). I wish there was a way to avoid having to play against these characters in Online Play and play against characters that actually require more skill. Even if they nerfed these characters like they did with Bowser Jr., it would be much appreciated so players can go head-to-head on a more equal playing field.
Ultimately though, I really enjoyed my time with this game and would definitely purchase a sequel if Nintendo were to release one. This game is a solid foundation for the series & hopefully Nintendo builds upon this with a future Mario Tennis release.
The controls are simple enough to get right away, but complex enough to take time to master, sort of like a good fighting game. There are enough levels and modes to give the game plenty of variety, but the regular game is fun enough that big fans won't even need other features.
It's probably the most satisfying online experience the good Nintendo games have to offer, simply because it's exactly what I want out of online tennis. The ability to play against a friend or to enter tournaments against strangers.
This is a must own game for the Switch, IMO, and is great fun with two players. I'm buying it for my cousin for Christmas.
The Good:
The game looks good and feels responsive. The story is ridiculous and insane, but suspend your belief and it becomes a charming Mario bananas-fun thing. I like the overall look and feel as well as the various types of play available. However as a 30-something I don't have too many friends that are lining up to play me in Aces, so it's a solitary affair.
The Bad:
Story mode does have a tendency to take FOREVER with the dialogue. Yes, I understand the need for story telling and context, but it is a snooze. The games themselves are fun however, but the learning curve is a little tough for me, let alone someone much younger. It's a good challenge and I like it, but it wears me down a little and I don't spend as much time in the game as I thought since I get a little worn out.
The ok:
Online play is good. It's mostly stable, but there is no real way to interact with fellow competitors. The bench of characters are a little weak with many of the characters aggressively falling into either being terrible (Waluigi) or very very strong (Boo). Other "all around" characters like Mario and Luigi are masters of nothing. So the continuum of strengths is a little messed up.
As I said in the title, I have found myself going back to the 3DS to play some real Mario Nintendo tennis, I love it. I will continue to play MTA, but with a little hesitation.
