Jedi Trial (Star Wars: Clone Wars Novel) Mass Market Paperback – May 31, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
With these ominous words, Pors Tonith, ruthless minion of Count Dooku, declares the fate of the Republic sealed. Commanding a Separatist invasion force more than one million strong, the cunning financier-turned-warrior lays siege to the planet Praesitlyn, home of the strategic intergalactic communications center that is key to the Republic’s survival in the Clone Wars. Left unchallenged, this decisive strike could indeed pave the way for the toppling of more Republic worlds . . . and ultimate victory for the Separatists. Retaliation must be swift and certain.
But engaging the enemy throughout the galaxy has already stretched Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s armies to the limit. There is no choice but to move against the surging waves of invading battle-droids on Praesitlyn with only a small contingent of clone soldiers. Commanding them will be Jedi Master Nejaa Halcyon–hand-picked by the Council for the do-or-die mission. And at his side, skilled young starfighter pilot Anakin Skywalker, a promising young Jedi Padawan eager to be freed of the bonds of apprenticeship–and to be awarded the title of Jedi Knight.
Shoulder to shoulder with a rogue Republic army officer and his battle-hardened crew, a hulking Rondian mercenary with an insatiable taste for combat, and a duo of ready-for-anything soldiers, the Jedi generals take to the skies and the punishing desert terrain of occupied Praesitlyn–to bring the battle to the Separatist forces. Already outnumbered and outgunned, when confronted with an enemy ultimatum that could lead to the massacre of innocents, they may also be out of options. Unless Anakin Skywalker can strike a crucial balance between the wisdom born of the Force . . . and the instincts of a born warrior.

That being said, I liked it and got really into it. Despite the fact that it didn't meet my original expectations, when I looked at it for what it is, it was awesome. The authors are obviously well versed in war and tactics and it came through in this book. Like anything else, read it for what it is and form your opinion. You might find that it is well worth it.
For prequel trilogy style fun and adventure, try Star Wars: Jedi Trial (A Clone Wars Novel).
The Good:
1. This novel actually has a "Clone War" in it. There are thousands of them. In addition, they actually engage the droid armies of the Seperatists. The war has been missing from many of the Clone Wars novels, which have focused on other aspects of the war instead.
2. Pors Tonith. Not the greatest bad guy of all time, but Pors is at least unique. He brings his banking knowledge to the battlefield and is ruthless. He also has a strange addiction to a tea that stains his gums. The tea comes up a lot.
3. Grudo. This Rodian is a unique character that outshone most of the others in the novel.
The Bad:
1. The Premise. If this station is so important, it is unfathomable that the Republic would have left it as unprotected as they did. I kept waiting for a good answer to this question, and never got one. In addition, despite taking over the communications center that is suppose to be so vital, it appears there were no repercussions anywhere in the universe. This left me wondering: why bother?
2. Minutae of the Battle. The battle had some excellent use of tactics and disucssion of strategy. However, in a couple of places, all this falls to the way side due to some gimic that the Seperatists have employed.
The Ugly:
1. Odie and Erk. Odie is a recon trooper. Erk is a pilot. They are both awful, awful characters that develop a ridiculous romance. They are forced to work with each other after their headquarters is overrun and they encounter each other in the field. Next thing you know, they have a hard time keeping their hands off each other and the spew terrible dialogue.
2. Dialogue. This was mentioned in the previous point. In many places it is just awful. A good editor should have fixed this.
Overall:
I'd recommend reading it to Star Wars fans because the end is kind of important in the grand scheme of things for the Star Wars universe. However, everyone else can skip it. I was disappointed with it after having read what it was about.
This novel does have an interesting place in the Clone War series. 'Shatterpoint' was the 'Apocalypse Now' of the series, while 'The Cestus Deception' told the story of resistance cells. This is the big battle novel. While that was refreshing, this novel could have been so much better.
Overall Grade: 2.75 stars.
I am a foreigner and these books are not translated in my country and this makes them more beautiful for me.
However, the plot seems nice. I hope to read many other books star wars.

Interessante anche perché spiega, a livello Legends, come Anakin abbia ottenuto il titolo di Cavaliere Jedi.

Two and a half years after 'Attack of the Clones', the important world of Praesitlyn falls into Separatist hands and only a small independent army, the Freedom's Sons and Daughters, are fighting back. The Republic sends a small force to recapture Praesitlyn, led by Jedi Master Nejaa Halcyon and Anakin Skywalker, desperately seeking advancement to Knighthood.
WHAT'S GOOD:
This book deals with much larger-scale events than the other Clone Wars books so far, going some length to recapturing the epic scope of the films (and earlier novels) that has been largely lacking in recent Star Wars fiction. The authors, having military backgrounds, manage very well to convey the tactics, logistics and horrors of large-scale ground combat, giving a definite air of realism to the story. There's also a few familiar cameo faces (something else sadly lacking in the Clone Wars novels) ranging from Asajj Ventress (from the comics, cartoons and 'The Cestus Deception') to Armand Isard (the father of the X-Wing series villain Ysanne Isard).
WHAT'S BAD:
I can't exactly quantify it, but there's an overwhelming feeling of shallowness to this book. No time or space is dedicated to describing the subtleties of the politics involved, the details of Praesitlyn itself, or even many of the main characters. The events are presented at such a rapid pace that it feels as though they're aren't important (particularly the actual invasion by the Separatists and the space battle at the end). Also, Zozridor Slayke is a thoroughly unlikable character who, obviously outnumbered and outgunned, heroically throws away the lives of most of his force and is then presented by the authors as some kind of tactical genius! Finally, I felt more could have been done with the character of Nejaa Halcyon, the fact that he has a wife like Anakin is only mentioned two or three times and no mention whatsoever is made of his work with CorSec or his limited ability to use Jedi telekinesis (both established by the character's creator Michael A. Stackpole in 'I, Jedi').
