What it doesn't have...
Halo has a great imaging feature where you can take photos of yourself and it will calculate body fat and make a virtual model of your body to predict what you will look like if you gain or lose weight. I loved this feature and the BMI calculation was accurate as it was almost exactly what I got from my doctor plus or minus a fraction of a percent. Halo also had a mobility assessment feature that would diagnose where you are having mobility issues and prescribe exercises and stretches to correct issues.
What Fitbit has that halo didn't...
Fitbit has an excellent calorie tracking feature with a bar code and database that is updated by user inputs. This feature was pretty terrible years ago when Fitbit first launched it but today the database is quite good and easy to update by snapping a few pictures. I've tried noom my fitness pal and other similar apps but the Fitbit version is the best I've seen.
Fitbit also now adds a recovery tracker as a part of Fitbit premium. This is great for tracking when you are best fit for a hard workout, when to take it easy, or when you should probably take a day off. It also has a stress tracker and mindfulness tracker. The mindfulness tracker also has some meditations that are available in premium as well. Registration of your device gives you 6 months of premium subscription for free.
Aside from those features where the two differ the units are pretty much the same except the Fitbit has a screen and the Gen 1 Halo interfaced only by the phone app. I prefer not to have a screen as I always use the app and the screen is just another weak point that can be damaged. Unfortunately not many trackers without screens are available these days. Even later generation Halos incorporated screens. Whoop is a non-screen option but has a higher subscription cost so it was a no-go for me. Fitbit gives you food logging, macronutrient tracking, calories burned, step counter, exercise tracking, heart rate, sleep tracker, water consumption, movement reminders, and weight loss goal tracker included without subscription in addition to the features I mentioned earlier only available with the premium subscription.
The main thing you like about it is that the exercise tracking is automatic. If I just exercise for 10 minutes or longer it figures out what exercises you are doing and logs it along with workout metrics. This is easy for me and it dies it accurately so I can just run, or get on my bike and go. You can manually set it up too if you prefer or wish to use GPS tracking.
Pros - Battery life. This will depend upon how you use the device. I have turned off all of the notifications and other stuff. I link the device to my phone once or twice a day for a few minutes and I don't compulsively check the screen. In this minimalist fashion I do manage 10 or 11 days between re-charges. That's very good for such a small device and I don't have to remember to recharge it every night so I'm happy too.
Accuracy - It's pretty good. Steps correlate with other devices as does heart rate. Sleep tracking is reasonable and apart from a well documented tendency to confuse deep sleep with light sleep it is consistent. These devices are only indicators and not proper medical devices. If you have sleep problems then a proper sleep polysomnography is what you need. But this is good enough. I've never been able to tell what the sleep score properly correlates too though. There are days when I can have a great sleep score and feel tired by 10:00am. it's just a number not a way of life.
The indifferent - The screen is small and the choice of displays isn't very good. I found one that works for me and I see no reason to change it. The screen is bright but very small. Another reason not to think this is a replacement for something like an apple watch.
Fit - the Inspire 3 comes with two soft, silicone straps. It is comfortable to wear. Just be advised that the device needs to be tight to the wrist to get proper readings. It can slip to a loose position and not be able to measure anything. This means that you'll get maybe 9 out of 10 nights of sleep records then a junk one. And, if you're lifting weights in a gym it will be useless for heart rate monitoring in those conditions. Otherwise it's fine.
The Bad - Only to a phone? My old fitbit used to link to my desktop where I could use a large display to see the data. New ones like the Inspire 3 only link to phones. This is a problem with getting older but why do I have to look at a tiny screen (my phone)? Guess fitbit couldn't be bothered to maintain the desktop software.
Fitbit Premium - aka the "con". So fitbit want to charge you a monthly fee for premium features. How dumb do they think I am? I don't see any benefit to this and certainly not for a "mere" $9.99. Don't fall for this. The Inspire 3 is a relatively inexpensive device from a well known brand. it doesn't need the extras premium can give and you don't need to give Fitbit the money. It's just another wasted subscription draining your wallet.
Conclusions - There is a lot to like about the Inspire 3 if you have the right mindset. it's well made, comfortable to wear, reasonably accurate and with good battery life. It is a good tracker. It's not a substitute for a proper smart watch even though Fitbit want you to think it is. If you're happy to let it be a tracker with limited contact with a phone it will meet your needs. And meet them well. As a tracker it's highly recommended. As a smart device with a premium subscription it's a joke. Recommended with use case caveats.
I did try a “cheap” smart watch to try and save money and it was pointless for sleep tracking. Should have gone with FitBit from the beginning, but you live and learn.
Overall, I love my FitBit. I’ll never try another fitness watch again.
