Falling Down (The Boy in the Iron Box Book 1) Kindle Edition

A group of mercenaries on an unsanctioned mission survives a plane crash in whiteout conditions in the Tian Shan mountains. The men are accustomed to danger. Now they’re growing accustomed to fear.

Team leader Liev and his band of survivors are stranded in the bitter winds with little hope of rescue—or outlasting the wolves that have scented blood. In the distance is the apparent sanctuary of an abandoned stone fortress. That an ancient bulwark even exists on this forsaken summit is beyond comprehension. So is what lies on the other side of its walls.

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Falling Down, chapter one of The Boy in the Iron Box, a blood-chilling serialized novel about an ancient secret that was never meant to be unleashed, featuring exclusive interior artwork. Each chapter can be read or listened to in one breathless sitting.

FALLING DOWN description

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Academy Award–winner Guillermo del Toro has created movies and series ranging from the science fiction love story of The Shape of Water to the comic-book action of Hellboy to the horrors of Nightmare Alley. But let me just say it: his new short story is scary.

“Falling Down” is the first installment—call it a pilot episode—of a six-part horror serial called
The Boy in the Iron Box. When a team of mercenaries survives a plane crash on a snow-covered mountaintop, they stumble across an ancient secret that was never meant to be unearthed. That fear of the unknown, both out in the world and within ourselves, is something that Guillermo del Toro’s creative vision turns to face head-on. I couldn’t look away—although I may have been peeking at the pages through my fingers as I read…

Anyone who’s watched a scary movie with me knows that they can measure my fright level by the pace of my popcorn eating. As you venture into this story, keep your friends close and your popcorn closer.

—Kjersti Egerdahl, Editor

Well written chapter in what looks to be an interesting story. So far, there’s very little character development. But the action is there and the narrative keeps one’s interest. Looking forward to the next installment.

I see a lot of people reviewing this saying it's not a complete story. It's the first chapter of a serialized novella, and judged on that basis, I think it's very successful! Suspenseful, imaginative, and fun, just like everything else CH and GDT have created together. Excited for the rest to come out in July!

This is ultra short. It sets up the suspense and mysterious surroundings very well. There isn't a full story or plot, but just enough to get you interested. It's successful at that.

A lot of action and intrigue packed into a short story. It really could have been the first couple chapters of a longer book. Feels a bit like a marketing ploy to get you to get book two, but it was interesting on its own.

I liked the story so far but it was awfully short. I'll have to get the other episodes. Good book.

I was quite confused when I came to the “end” of this “short story”. It seemed like it was the end of a first chapter of a book. The characters were introduced, they were at the beginning of an adventure, there was a hint of something they were going to discover, and then a cliffhanger. It was over. I get it that they want you to buy the other “books”, but to advertise this as a book or even as a short story is very misleading. For that reason I would’ve given it one star, but because it was well-written and engaging, I’m giving it two stars. If it had been a real short story with a conclusion it would’ve potentially gotten 5 stars.

A decent introduction to kick off this mystery/horror(?) story. Too soon to tell what direction it will go at this point...
Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024
If I could I would give this Minus 5 stars. For several reasons.

1 Amazon First Reads lists this as a short story that you can read in less than one hour. Author calls this book 1. A this isn't a book or a short story. By the definition this reader was taught by my grandmother a librarian. It's about a chapter that abruptly ends. B A short story has a beginning !middle and end. It has a beginning but lacks the other 2.

2 The blurb for Falling Down reads as if this is about a group of Elite mercenary team. The beginning calls them Black Ops mercenaries. This team by their names are Russian and Ukrainian flying into Asia. It gets very political from the start with comments about Russian president Putin ; as well as the pandemic and controversial ways not to contract illnesses.

So to this reader this feels like a to use a commercial term for retail ads back in the day. As bait and switch to get you in the door. Without the pictured items being available in all areas. I downloaded this story with expectations that weren't met even remotely.

30 pages story begins on 4 ends on 28
Said to have illustrations As 1
Says it's a Book its a tease to read 5 other "books" doesn't even amount to a prequel or a Novella .

Final opinion of this reader. Waste of my time. Thus I wouldn't recommend to others. Never heard of the author before; will avoid from now on. Don't care for the methods used. What I did read wasn't compelling .

3.0 out of 5 stars A basic quick-read with intriguing plot
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2024
This is a quick-read, the first in a series. The sentences are short like this. Everything kept basic and easy to read making it very accessible, but a little simple for average and above readers.
Like - the plot heading in an interesting direction, maybe along the lines of F Paul Wilson's The Keep?
Dislike - overtly simple English even my 6 year old could follow.

Firstly, I hadn't realised it was only a "teaser" being only a few pages long. What I did read, I liked very much. The writing was good and kept my interest but I was really disappointed it ended so soon. When is the "full" book out? Would like to buy it.
