WOW! The Exchange by author John Grishman is simply the Best of all his novels!
Has anyone seen my socks? When finishing John Grisham’s recent novel “The Exchange”, the story absolutely blew my socks off. For this reader, this is simply the best novel he has written.Mitch and Abby McDeere are back. This time they are back in a big way. Mitch is now a partner of the largest law firm in the world. They have offices throughout the world with the headquarters in Manhattan. They represent Lannak, a Turkish construction company, that has done a number of projects in Libya. The latest project is a massive bridge that was supposed to have a river of water underneath it, but instead it is a river of sand. The massive project was thought up by Colonel Gaddafi himself. The challenge for Mitch is that the Colonel has lost interest in the project and thus has not paid the Turkish company.Jack Ruch, the top man at Scully & Pershing, wants Mitch to go to Libya and appraise the situation. Jack takes with him a beautiful Italian woman who works at their UK office. Giovanna’s father is the head partner in Italy. His daughter wanted to get out of the office and work with Scully & Pershing’s international clients. Her first assignment is with Mitch in Libya. The plan is to first go to the bridge project and get a better understanding of the situation from the onsite managers of Lannak. Sometimes plans simply do not work the way they were meant to, especially in third world countries. What really appealed to this reader was the international aspect of dealing in the third world. This reader’s career was outside the United States, and he still has memories of third world countries, especially Pakistan, that he would like to forget.“The Exchange” is the sequel to the author Grisham’s second novel “The Firm” which was published in 1991. This reader read “The Firm” over three nights in Tokyo in September, 1993. A re-read of that novel is now imperative.

As someone who spent decades practicing law in a Big Law firm, and has some experience with diplomatic matters, I read the book with a view from the inside-out. I found the plot and depiction of characters very (actually surprisingly) authentic. He caught the nuanced subtleties that most would overlook. The ending was a bit abrupt, but I forgive him for that. Grisham's clean, direct, and fast-paced writing style made it a joy to read.

This is a good follow up to the McDeere couple after they left Memphis in the previous book, “The Firm”. The book has a disappointing end but for the most part it has a good bit of drama and suspense.

Mitch McDeere returns, working for a world-wide legal team, taking a case to make Libyan dictator Gaddafi pay his 400 million dollar fee to an Italian construction firm that had built Gaddafi’s bridge to nowhere. Once Gaddafi realized it wasn’t going to be used, he refused to pay for it.

Mitch wants to see the actual bridge and so does Giovanna an Italian lawyer who also works for Mitch’s law company; she’s also the daughter of the Italian businessman who loaned Gaddafi the money. They set off to see the bridge with a large security team. Giovanna’s father assures Mitch there’s nothing to fear. Mitch falls behind, lucky for him as a revolutionary movement kidnaps Giovanna and murders the guards, beheading some of them with a chain saw. They want four hundred million for the return of Giovanna.

Most of the book is about how Mitch gathers the money to pay the ransom. Gaddafi send two groups of his best soldiers to save her; they were both embarrassed. Finding the money to pay the ransom isn’t all that interesting. We want to know what’s going on with Giovanna; we get one brief glimpse.

It’s also hard to believe that these backward camel herders would be able to sent a representative (two actually) to deal with Abby, Mitch’s wife in New York City and later Morocco. They send her their terms for Giovanna’s release. There’s also a deadline. We’re also supposed to believe that they’d take less than the hundred million. When I first read that Abby was going to Morocco to deal with the kidnappers, my first thought was whether she’d be kidnapped, too. Would Mitch risk his wife’s life?

The biggest problem I had with the book was that Grisham doesn’t move the story until late in the book, and then it’s too easy. As a reader you know they’re not going to kill Giovanna.

Good storyline, swiftly unfolded with eager reading . Only a couple of procedural gaffes for those with legal insights . Very riveting and enjoyable.

This was worth every minute of the 30 year wait to find out what happened to Mitch and Abby McDeere! All the books John Grisham wrote in the years between kept me tantalized as I waited for the main event! I will never get enough of his books. The characters feel like people I personally know and either root for or hope they get what they deserve.

Mitch and Abby started it off as young, bright-eyed, fresh graduates ready to take the world by its tail. Little do they know that tiger is getting ready to devour them. They manage to outwit and outlive the 9 years of McDeere’s law firm and we find them living a quiet and happy life 20 years later. They have never lost their taste for a little exotic food and danger, and now they are going to get their second chance.

First of all, revisiting Mitch and Abbie from The Firm is an excellent idea. Throughout the years, all of Grisham's novels have well-formed, interesting characters. Bringing them back with what follows in their lives is an excellent idea. It's like catching up with old friends. As usual, Grisham can write. His characters, locations and plot always have just enough information to form complete pictures in the reader's mind, without going to boring extremes. He writes about things he knows, and it shows. So why only four stars? Occasionally, the story seems more like reading a journal than following a story. And keeping it real, I didn't really love Mitch and Abbie. It's like intellectually they learned from their mistakes, but when things got tough, expediency rules. Mitch and Abbie were really quite predictable. I found myself wanting to know more about the terrorist liaisons and Abbie's guard. What motivated them? What's their side of the plot and the story? All that being said, I do hope Grisham goes back to some of his other characters. They're often just too interesting to keep on a shelf.

John Grisham NEVER DISAPPOINTS and The Exchange is a great read. Just enough Firm nostalgia , but with great new characters, plot twists, and expense. My mind was racing the entire read trying to decide who could be trusted and who could not.
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024
As with most of Grisham's novels, he does a great job of writing in a way that is easy to read and flows well. He can write about any topic and make it seem interesting. That keeps this from being a one star review. My biggest complaint about his books is that he often fails with the ending. In many of his books, there isn't a compelling ending but simply a place where the book stops. While there are exceptions, the majority lack a compelling twist or conflict that makes you happy you read it. In many cases it seems he had a great idea for the story but had no idea how to end it. The Exchange is the worst example of this failure to resolve a story well. I kept reading this book thinking there would be some plot twist but I was very disappointed. If you are looking for something to read I highly recommend you run away from this one. Go find something else where the plot had some thought put into it.
