I have recently embarked on a quest to read all of the major stories of the Star Wars saga; and while I grew up playing the games and watching the movies, it was not until recently that I made the effort to pick up a few of the books. At the time of this review, I have read the Darth Bane Trilogy, played Knights of the Old Republic, read the story of Revan, and enjoyed the short stories of the Lost Tribe of the Sith.

However, no story has yet filled in more of the history of the origins of the universe than the Darth Bane trilogy. I had always seen and heard of Rakata items and lore, but it was not until this trilogy that I associated them with the beginning of the force users. Similarly, I'd helped destroy the infamous Starforge, but I had a hard time placing its significance in the grand scheme of the universe as a whole (rather than just isolated to that video game series).

The story of Darth Bane helps readers make the transition from the Sith as they're represented in the Old Republic to the Sith as they're seen in the movies. The trilogy is packed with Star Wars history and is a must read for any Star Wars fan. Aside from its historical significance, it's an enjoyable read.

The story follows no more than three protagonists at a time, balancing your attention span against the need to cover conflicting and intertwining stories; and the characters are relatable (as relatable as fictional beings can be), and the writing style is light, enjoyable, and fun.

All-in-all, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi, is thinking about beginning their Star Wars journey, or is simply looking for a quick and easy read.

This trilogy was amazing to read. It was my first Star Wars book and I can’t wait to get started on the earlier books and comics. I was hoping there would be a continuation after this but there isn’t, I think. Being able to read further into the Star Wars universe gives me a satisfaction and renewed appreciation for the world. I like knowing what happened in the past before where we’re currently are in the SW universe. I just wish there were more books about the Sith. But this book series had my attention and I didn’t want it end. Bravo Drew K!

This is a well written series. Despite following dark characters, you still develop vested interest in many of the characters, a tribute to great character development. The sith philosophy developed by Darth Bane is very interesting. While I would never hesitate to call Palpatine evil, with Darth Bane, I am left wondering if there maybe some sense in what he is saying/doing even as I recoil at things he does. The author needs to be commended for not just introducing the philosophy in word but writing the characters and story to explain it well.

I think that the Bane series is the best of all the Star Wars books. This is certainly personal opinion, and someone could make a counter-claim for any series, and I couldn't refute it without referring to personal preference in many or possibly most cases. I will propose why I think this is the best of the series:

1) Sith are cool
2) Bane and his apprentice are awesome
3) The foundation and thinking for the Sith established is the only one that makes sense
4) You end up respecting the heck out of all the Sith lords afterwards and have a deeper sense of Sidious and the thinking and rationale of his lineage as a result - Sidious is the culmination of Bane's vision!
5) It deepens and complicates the mythology of the force in ways that Jedi focused novels never can
6) You get to see the seedier side of the Universe the Jedi live in: The Jedi live in a kind of bubble, and by reading Jedi focused novels, you only see this universe through the Jedi bubble. These novels give you an insight into the seedier, darker side of this universe and take you out of the Jedi bubble. Money, wealth, power, prestige doesn't matter to the Jedi, and so there is always an idealized veneer through which this space-travelling culture is seen in most novels. The Bane series shows you the universe and the motivations that move and drive the 'other people' in this galaxy - and quite honestly, provides a more complex and interesting picture of this galaxy and the people who live in it.

Karpyshyn does a great job of telling a story that we are so used to be told over video that its hard to notice that its a book. I should begin by saying that I am not an avid reader. But recently I needed to fly about 10+ hours, and I haven't been able to sleep on flights recently, so I decided to load up my Kindle app. I figured if its something I'm interested in maybe I would be able to read it and not be bored out of my mind.

There's a clear reason that the books are NY Times bestsellers. There is an ample amount of imagery and description for a set of characters and worlds, but also leaves enough room for your own mind to fill in the blanks and assume certain things based on the things you've seen from Star Wars in the past. In my opinion a perfect balance between letting you imagine the story, but also giving you enough information that you see the story unfold right before your eyes.

Now whats really great is that you get all 3 in one package, which means you don't need to hunt the rest down, and they all flow right after one another. If you're looking for a way to kill time till episode 8, or about to hop on a long flight, I say download all three, and even if you read a few pages a night, you will enjoy the experience of experiencing the world of Star Wars through a different channel.

The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be "unnatural". If one is to comprehend the true nature of the force, one must study ALL of it's aspects.
