The Regale, a mysterious ruby with massive powers, went missing in 1558 when King Henry VIII destroyed Archbishop Thomas Becket’s Shrine. Now Daniel Azar, priest and Vatican Archeologist and his friend Captain Luca Rohner of the Swiss Guard must find the jewel and guard it against an alien threat straight out of the apocalypse. Once known for its healing powers, The Regale is crucial for helping to blunt the chaos and destruction promised by the intruders.

Taking the face of ancient Sumerian gods, the evil menace intends to succeed where it once failed thousands of years ago; namely, in enslaving humanity. The human race is technologically advanced but individuals have little hope or meaning in life. The West has become decadent, and an ancient terror plays on that weakness, striking fear into people’s hearts. It promises to send a Beast from the heavens, whose mouth is fire, whose breath is death, whose will is woe.

Daniel, Luca, and the rest of the VERITAS team recognize the danger and chase the clues to find The Regale. Throughout Europe and the United States, they search, encountering horror and terror along the way. Hoping the jewel is with the missing bones of the long-dead martyr, they discover a ghostly presence in Canterbury, England willing to help them find this relic.

Meanwhile, the Pope is martialing the countries of the world to unite and fight the alien presence which promises to destroy humanity. Aided by the US President and a young King of England, Pope Patrick is determined to head off the destruction of the human race by rallying humanity to defend itself.

Past and present merge in this paranormal thriller where ancient miracles and beliefs come alive again to offer the world hope and healing in the midst of coming destruction. The courage of humankind has diminished. Heroism is absent. Valor gone. Now, only a few remain who possess the ability to uplift the nations in a desperate attempt to rescue civilization. Those few include Daniel, Luca, and their friends. But the question remains: will they be enough to challenge the coming plague of evil?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here, Barr's command of genre technique is masterful as he teases his readers with frissons of terror and demonic manifestations that are wholly chilling and for readers who got hooked on Gods In The Ruins, Beneath The Bishop's Bones will likely exceed their expectations and leave them eagerly anticipating book three. A must-read for Occult Horror and edgy Thriller fans it is unreservedly recommended."

E. R. Barr spent his youth wandering around “Conor Country” known better as the “Driftless Area” of the southwest corner of the state of Wisconsin. The Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers and the lands around them, dotted with Indian mounds and filled with stories and legends, fueled his imagination. Not till he started traveling world-wide did he truly begin to see connections between Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the lands where he was born. His forebears came from those ancient nations and settled there in Wisconsin. Always wondering why, he kept searching for answers. A Catholic Priest, a university professor, high school teacher and administrator, a popular speaker on all things Celtic and Tolkienesque, E. R. Barr makes his home in northwest Illinois. He is the author of the urban fantasy series, THE TALES OF CONOR ARCHER including the novels ROAN and SKELLIG. He is also the author of the paranormal thriller collection, THE VATICAN ARCHIVES SERES including the novels GODS IN THE RUINS and BENEATH THE BISHOP’S BONES. All novels take place in the Conorverse.

I didn't yet read the first book of this series, Gods in the Ruins, but this one, Beneath the Bishop's Bones, was okay as a stand-alone without having to go back and read the other volume. But, based on how much I enjoyed BBB, I'm headed to the first volume as soon as I have time. This second installment flew by for me. I'm not usually a huge fan of historical fantasy, but as a former Catholic and history buff, I accepted my sister's suggestion that I pick up Bishop's Bones and give it a whirl. Within about five pages I was hooked.

The whole "Sumerian gods" aspect was intriguing, and left me wondering if the author Barr, who is a Catholic priest I found out, didn't mix a wee bit of truth into the fantasy. There are lots of characters so it helps to keep a note card with names, as I did. And for fans of plot twists and surprises that are genuine enough to work, this book is a winner. Is there an evil beast afoot who seeks to enslave us? That's just fiction, right? Well, there are plenty of folks, Catholics and otherwise, who think there are evil forces in play, especially as wars and human-like technology are making their mark on the 2020s.

What I liked most about Barr's Beneath the Bishop's Bones was the believablilty factor, which is hard to pull off in a book like this. It had a flavor of Sherlock Holmes meets Star Wars in the depth of plot, cleverness, and well-drawn characters. I'm trying to get my teen-age nephew to read it, so will be interested in his thoughts if he takes me up on the offer. My guess is that young adults would love this book as much as an old guy like me did. Five huge stars for Beneath the Bishop's Bones.

Beneath the Bishop's Bones: A Vatican Archives Thriller by E.R. Barr was an amazing book. I will admit that this would not have been my first pick, but I was looking for something different. There was a smooth change from past to present, with some unexpected twists, throughout Beneath the Bishop's Bones: A Vatican Archives Thriller by E.R. Barr. The main idea is that the Vatican are trying to gather information on a coming threat. The journey to gather information has some interesting situations. Our villan, or villans, are not what you would expect. There are many descriptions of what our main characters face. The usually forces are at play on both sides. The battle scenes are wrote with great detail. You can almost experience the event as if in the same room. There are moments when something appears or happens, and the details describing the moments are very vivid. The book does contain violence, so I would recommend Beneath the Bishop's Bones: A Vatican Archives Thriller by E.R. Barr to an 18+ reader. The ending reads like a movie. This is a great read for those that enjoy mysteries. There are so many things that pop up unexpectedly. Be aware that there are some slower moments, but the active scenes are worth the wait. Overall a great read, and a good book.

BENEATH THE BISHOP’S BONES: A Vatican Archives Thriller, vol. 2 (The Vatican Archives Series) by E.R Bar is an amazing story. This novel takes you on a fun and mysterious ride. Each page leaves you suspenseful bliss. The author is amazing at detailing each hair raising experience in the book. The thought and detail put in the book by the author is truly marvelous. This thriller is the best book I have read as of late. The author is extremely gifted in building the theme and depth of the novel. I was hooked in this book from page one wondering what was going to happen. Truly thrilled I was able to read this amazing book. Here is just a snippet from this novel so you can get just a taste of the book for yourself. That Ben was shuffling through the car park at that moment with the same homeless girls that had accompanied him when Miss Jenny Wren had been brought to the hospital the previous week. He and his compatriots were looking the worse for wear. Their scruffy homeless pants and shirts looked even more tattered and dirty. Their eyes weren’t vacant, but the pupils were much larger. An intelligence was behind them, but it wasn’t human. It was as if it needed more vision to see. People unconsciously veered away from them. Ordinary folks didn’t want to react with the homeless anyway, but this new avoidance was visceral, not needing conscious intent. Something was wrong with Ben and his friends.

Beneath the Bishop’s Bones: A Vatican Archives Thriller, by E.R. Barr, is a highly imaginative supernatural thriller, that will keep you guessing until the very end. The book is actually the second in this series, but can be read alone without its predecessor. This fast paced and captivating read drew me in from the very first page. The historical and Catholic elements really keep it authentic, and the deeply intriguing characters make the story even more engaging.

Barr is a brilliant author who pens twists and turns from start to finish. I couldn’t put it down. It’s easy to read and humorous in all the right places. While there are many Biblical references throughout, the storyline remains action packed. What a fantastic Good vs Evil tale, that is such a great mix of history and theology, soaked in fantasy. “Daniel drew close to the overlooked burial. The archdeacon thought he was reverencing the once inhabited grave, but he was not. He placed his hand on the stone and immediately felt an electric charge go through his right hand and into his ring finger. Quickly placing his left hand over the glowing ring, he stood and backed away, making sure that no one saw the light and that the three brothers stayed far back. Unlike in the upper cathedral, something was here that was attracting his ring.”

This book was such a pleasure to read, and I highly recommend it. I am looking forward to many more from E.R. Barr.
