Amazing value VR headset, but the larger storage and accessories are overpriced
4 out of 5 stars
Amazing value VR headset, but the larger storage and accessories are overpriced
Pros:* This is possibly the best value all-round VR headset that can be standalone or double as a PCVR headset.* Massive improvement over the Quest 2. Better resolution, improved graphics, controller and hand/body tracking, slimmer fit.* Pancake lenses are a massive improvement over the old lenses with adjustable IPD and spacing for glasses. Default headstrap is split at the back to allow for ponytails to fit through.* Wifi 6E makes wireless Airlink for PCVR usage a genuine viable alternative to a USB cable.* Mixed reality shows a lot of promise and the passthrough quality is impressive.Cons:* Not quite as slim compared to the Quest 2 as the promo images suggest. (Looking just at the white plastic part in comparison images, rather than the whole headset makes it look much slimmer than it really is).* Battery life is very average. Using AR or screen recording can significantly reduce battery life.* Limiting the base unit to 128gb feels like an intentional move to encourage people to pay a premium for the 512gb model (an extra USD $150 for the additional storage feels ridiculous)* The built-in headstrap and controller wrist-straps are very average, and the first-party accessories are extremely overpriced. The price quickly increases with one or two accessories.* Good Airlink performance relies on having at least a Wifi 6 router minimum (6E preferred) and PC with Wifi 6/6E or wired connection to the router. Some tips for improving your experience:* For the best Airlink experience, consider buying a Wifi 6E card/USB dongle for your PC dedicated to connecting to your headset. The "Intel Killer AX1690" m.2 card is considered the best for the Quest 3, however it may not be compatible with your PC.* The ringless controller design means high-level Beat Saber means those who use a "claw grip" will have to change styles as this kind of grip interferes with the controller tracking* There is a noticeable gap at the base of the headset around the nose. For some this isn't a problem and even is useful for keeping track of one's position in the real world, but for others it could be immersion-breaking and may need to use a foam insert or similar.* The headset can be used whilst charging, so if one doesn't want to buy the Elite Battery headstrap, one can easily use a small powerbank in their pocket (just be mindful of the power cable and headset heat levels)Overall: For most users, the 128gb is sufficient for the moment (especially if you primarily play exercise/sports games or use it as a PCVR headset) but it feels like an intentional move by Meta to encourage people to buy the 512gb model (which likely has a bigger profit margin). By the time you buy a couple of the first-party accessories (most Quest 1/2 accessories are incompatible with the Quest 3), it's easy to spend as much on a few accessories as it is the headset itself (consider waiting for 3rd party accessories). That all being said, this is a genuine next-gen VR headset that has the potential to go finally push VR closer to the mainstream. It does most of what the Apple's Vision Pro will be able to do at a fraction of the cost (just not as polished) with the benefit of a well-established ecosystem of VR apps and games. It's also a very capable PCVR headset at a substantially more accessible price point and, when paired with a PC/router with Wifi 6/6E support, allows for excellent, very low-latency untethered/wireless play - just make sure to keep an eye on the battery level.

Based on a couple of hours use. I'm a stickler to say the least and had been looking up potential issues before grabbing this one. My impressions:

- It's much crisper. More than I expected I'd say. The res is definitely better, As you pan your head slowly, you do see jaggies oscillating around even horizontal lines because of the angled screens. I was scrutinising that when I swapped back to the Q2 and saw just how comparatively poor the fresnel lenses are on that. In the Q2, if you look at any bright object on a dark background (eg a person icon in the social menu) slightly to one side of your fov then turn your head to make it approach the edge of your view, you'll see a ghost of the icon starts emerging, like chromatic abberation. On the q3 there's none of that business. However if you look for it you can see the pixel grid isn't horizontal/vertical. I'm sure I'll stop noticing.
- The facial interface thing doesn't fit my particular face like a glove, but the thing they say about it being less protruding is true. Because it's compact and close to your face, when you turn your head you don't get that annoying feeling of inertia as the headset keeps going after you stop turning your head. Much less, anyway. Notably it also stinks less - I ended up soaking the Q2's facial interface for a full day in soapy water when I got it. Mind you, they did recall them so they were some seriously stinky offerings. I doubt I'll need to even wash this one at all, I'm sure the VOC's will vent in the coming weeks.
- It seems to fit my glasses quite comfortably, moreso than Q2. Having said that, I think I'll try to blutak my q2 ones in, and I'll no doubt order some q3 ones.
- On that matter, I bought a 3rd party headstrap with the crank knob on the back but haven't tried it yet. I actually found the default strap more acceptable this time, because of the lower headset inertia on moving. The Q2 was really intolerable. I might even stick with it since it's light; perhaps it'll get uncomfortable after a certain period.

- I didn't notice any fan noise or dead pixels.

- Colours seem more nicely saturated. Blacks aren't super black, but I've never been a huge stickler on that.

- Menus etc are more responsive. In a game, say walkabout, you'd hit the menu button on q2 to take a screenshot or exit, and you could feel it groaning before it brings the dialog up. This one just goes zap and there it is. Not sure if loading is any better.

- Can't comment on better graphics, as I don't have anything that's been updated for Q3. I'll be trying it with PCVR though and can see the text is more readable when I look at my desktop.

- Controllers feel more nimble without the rings. Whether those tracking issues discussed online are a thing, I'll have to see.

- I had the 64gb q2, I couldn't even download the virtual environment to compare just then, so just for that fact it's nice to have the ability to install a few things.

- Passthrough is better and coloured, but I couldn't read my monitor text from the normal distance I sit at. More than enough to navigate the house or grab your drink though.

So yeah, I'll need to use it more to see if there's any yet to be discovered eye strain or other unforeseen niggles. Assuming not I'll say it's an easy upgrade. Q4 will be years off. If you're a PCVR purist you may want to await the Pico 5 max, but that's also a good year away; if you're doing it here and there, why wait.
Looking through the Q2 even after a few mins of the Q3 did make the fresnel lenses very obvious and annoying, so I think I'll be with this one until the Q4 or an affordable variant of the apple vision pro shows up.

Headset is great, pancake lenses is such a huge upgrade over the Fresnel lenses of the Quest 2, PSVR, etc. I have stigmatism, and so I always thought the reason why text was some times unreadable, was due to my eyesight. However it was just the fresnel lenses this whole time. Games on the Quest 3 run amazingly well, tracking of the controllers feels a lot better, and hand tracking does feel slightly better as well.

Playing PCVR games, and watching movies/series on the Quest 3 is even better than before. The weight distribution is a lot better as it's no longer so front heavy. I can now drink from my gym water bottle without needing a straw when playing VR fitness games, as the bottle no longer slams into the quest when taking a drink. Passthrough is really crisp, though can look a bit fuzzy if your lighting is poor. Even so, it's crisp enough to still be able to read and use stuff on your phone without taking the headset off.

I'm looking forward to more games implementing MR. It may appear as gimmicky now, but it has such strong potential. Imagine a horror game of running away/hiding from a monster, that's in your own house? Beautiful nightmare fuel hahahahahaha.

All in all, this is a great product. It may not be as cheap as the Quest 2 was, but with how much every other new tech is going up in price, the $300 rise isn't that much of a stretch in my honest opinion. You'll find that most, if not all of the competition to the Quest 3, will be significantly more expensive.

Great headset, I find this one far more comfortable than the original Quest, it’s a much more compact design which seems to have the weight closer to your face than the old one meaning the centre of gravity/weight distribution are better. I wouldn’t want it to be any heavier but the stock strap feels sturdy to me and Quest 3 feels more comfortable with my glasses than Quest 1 did without them which says a lot to me.

The screen clarity is a massive jump up too, watching tv shows and movies off my PC with the built in Remote Display app is smooth and clear, watching in BigScreen with a friend also nice and sharp, comparable to or better than watching on my cheap 1080p monitors but not quite as nice as a good 4K monitor/tv obviously.

The colour passthrough/mixed reality stuff is amazing, huge upgrade from previous headsets in that you can read text on your pc monitor/tv or phone screen through the headset (if you’re standing still and holding the phone steady, it doesn’t seem to render it clearly if moving), or just double tap the side of the headset to see reality and walk over to the fridge for a drink or something. It feels far less necessary to glance out the nose gap or lift up the headset and I often find myself leaving the headset on after finishing a game and just sitting down on the couch in passthrough with my PC display up until the battery drains. Clarity wise it feels like your vision is phone camera quality from 5-10 years ago, so not bad but not crispy flawless vision and the exposure/brightness adjusts dynamically the same way your phone camera does if you point it at your window for example, so an evenly lit room looks really decent in passthrough now, far from perfect but more than good enough.

Games run nice and smooth and the added pixel density of the screens makes long distance stuff in multiplayer FPS a bit easier to see which can give you a slight edge up. The controllers not having rings is a big plus since they won’t bump into each other during various common movements like they would in previous generations.

Battery life is the only thing that I wish was better but it’s no worse than the battery life on my Quest 1, unless using the mixed reality stuff in the colour passthrough which seems to use more battery. I’ve still gotten about 2 hours in VR games or bigscreen type stuff, about 1.5 hours in mixed reality with remote display, browser, etc.
Controller battery life is beyond amazing, other gaming controllers need to learn a thing or 2 from this.
