L'Università di Jena, fondata ufficialmente nel 1558, fu voluta da Johann Friedrich I, duca di Sassonia; con la dissoluzione del Ducato di Sassonia, nel 1918, assunse il nome di Thüringische Landesuniversität, fino al 1934, quando fu intitolata a Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller.
