This is the highest salary I've ever encountered in the data space in the UK... £550,000 as well as quarterly bonuses, stock, etc. This was a couple of years ago so it is has probably increased since then... The CDO actually said - 'I don't know how much I earn'. Crazy right? Needless to say, I knew then the chances of placing that candidate were very, very slim (And I haven't) But it really hit home to me the opportunities that exist within the data space to earn really good money According to several sources if you earn over £60,000 or thereabouts you're in the top 10% of earners in the UK (I don't know if that's true, I thought that was a little low) Then I considered that the average salary for a mid level Data Engineer is between £60,000 - £70,000, where salaries have stagnated over the last 18-months or so That's still someone who's very much an individual contributor, building data pipelines, data warehouses, etc Imagine how far you can elevate your career and earnings if you finessed your business, leadership, and commercial skills as a Data Engineer! 6-figure earnings are fully in reach and achievable if you finesse those skills as well as your technical portfolio in this space... #data #recruitment #analytics #databricks

Developers who secured post-covid jobs are on the hunt again. But this time, the market is COMPLETELY different. A bit late to the party with this after being away. However, Tech Nation released their 2024 report last week and here are some of the highlights: - UK tech sector reached a valuation of $1.1 trillion in Q1 2024 - UK tech sector #1 in Europe - $21.3bn raised by UK Tech startups in 2023 - 16% of total UK VC investment went to AI startups in Q1 2024 - Q1 2024 the biggest quarterly UK fundraise to date ($50.2bn) With 1,800+ AI startups backed by VCs & 20 AI unicorns in the UK, it's clear that AI continues to grow in importance, with the UK being a very exciting place to be!

Why are you using #Go / #golang? Popularity with #Go / #Golang is going through the roof... particularly in the North West tech scene... but why? dcoded. we have been talking to a lot of #SoftwareEngineeringLeaders who are now utilising #Go as one of their primary programming languages within their Tech Stack. WHY? Well... the reasons tended to rhyme with: - Distribution and Compile capability - its quick! - Simplicity, Concurrency and Flexibility - so its easy... - Static Typing, and Code Formatting - its reliable & easy to maintain - The tech community loves it - lots of documentation and support available! - Backed by Google - its got real pedigree Hmmm... What's the point in low-balling someone at offer stage? I spoke to someone recently who as a data leader was earning 6-figures and was offered a substantially lower package by a role they were interviewing for a bank. Initial offer rejected, plan B was to make another offer... the absolute top end of the salary bracket which was still below their current basic as well as the wider benefits being less than attractive than their current role. What it all boils down to is that the business didn't want to advertise the salary on the job advert and so when it came to offer they lost out and basically wasted the candidate's time. If you have to go back & re-offer then you will probably lose the candidate. Make the first offer your best offer so you don't have to go through this kind of laborious process which prolongs the process for the candidate who has probably been put off the role just a little bit by now. Also - put salaries on the job description. If the argument for not doing so is you're worried that current employees will see it then you have bigger problems down the line... Everyone wants to be in a role that pays market rate as well as the more sentimental elements like a healthy work environment with flexible working and career progression etc... So, a tale old as time, still happens now, and the reasons for not advertising salaries will never make sense to me but do it? Please? 😂

Data contracts don’t just apply to source data This is one of the things that dbt Labs does really well: the v1.5 release introduced “contracts” and access groups to facilitate this Both have quite a lot of detail, but to summarise: • Contracts fail a model’s update if the update doesn’t conform to the defined schema • Access groups define which parts of your pipelines can reference each other, similar to the “public”, “protected”, and “private” concepts in software engineering I think it’s clear why you’d want to enforce a contract, and there have been solutions to this pre-dating dbt (like the write-audit-publish pattern) But why should you care about access? Defining what your consumers “can” and “can’t” look at is another aspect of your data contract Anything you “allow” your consumers to use is something that you’re committing to maintain in a consistent manner If your consumers are “allowed” to use any of the objects that you maintain, then refactoring becomes a pain — you either: • Make changes now and risk breaking things downstream • Engage with your downstream consumers and give them a grace period between warning of and then making your changes Alternatively, if you agree the scope of “public” objects with your consumers beforehand, you can freely update any of your “private”/"protected" objects whenever and however you want — as long as the “public” objects remain consistent Defining your access is beneficial for everyone: • It’s beneficial for you because you know which objects you can freely change without breaking things downstream — good for your developer velocity • It’s beneficial for your consumers because they’ll have a consistent and stable set of objects to consume from — good for keeping consumers happy Whether you’re using dbt or not, being clear about your data contracts throughout your entire pipeline will keep everyone happy #dbt #analyticsengineering #datacontracts

This Tech Recruiter is betting on 4th July Election being a 'good thing!' As a Tech Recruiter, my ears and eyes are always open to indicators for upturns and downturns in the UK Tech sector. Couple of tip bits of data. UK new tech startups has had 11% growth in last quarter. UK Mergers and Acquisition has had a 7.9% deal value increase from 2023 Q3 to 2024 Q1. But that's coming from a drastically low overall spend in M&A deals. This suggests a tentative upswing and more positive future. From my own anecdotal evidence, there is more activity out there! However, unemployed Contractors and Perm (Developers, PM's - all disciplines) are finding salaries and opportunities are still flat lining when compared to previous years. July is an earlier election than expected. Rishi Sunak has chosen 4th July rather than October (or later) for one of these reasons 1) Inflation is down which is GOOD economic news but he's expecting bad economic news later in the year 2) Politically he's expecting things to be better now than later. Rwanda plan might disintegrate. More infighting within the party as time continues. I'm betting on the reason being (2) and actually there will be more good news for the economy later in the year with continued low inflation. Also, I believe, Labour will gain a comfortable majority and business will see this as positive and stable (especially because BoE gave Reeves a thumbs up). Therefore, it's better to have the election 4th July rather than later in the year. Thank you Rishi. Just to mention. I see the Tories and Labour as pretty much the same with economic policies which effect the Tech sector. It's just that one party is spiralling and that's not healthy. #election #tech #jobs

DevOps Engineering salaries can wildly vary. Yes there's always the nuance of how much each candidate contributes, but in several cases what one Snr engineer does in a company vs another can have a salary flux of up to 45k. Crazy, right! Following a very successful brief with an amazing FinTech, we were set the task of finding the very best DevOps Engineers for sub £80k. With a confidence configuring AWS environments, using Terraform (& either Python or Go) on a regular basis, as well as good knowledge of ECS or Kubernetes. The down side for any agency is you produce a stellar shortlist - honestly all 6 could have been hired and each have been vetted and referenced - so we know they're great. However only one candidate prevails but leaves 5+ incredible profiles eager to find their next adventure. We've new briefs coming on board thankfully but if there are others in my extended network that have struggled to find top DevOps talent at a sensible price range reach out & we can discuss what's realistic in the market and even demo a few of those amazing profiles I'm talking about. #DevOps #HybridLondon #RemoteUK #IncredibleTalent #Kureos

🤨🤯Why is it now harder for businesses to hire the best person for the job, when application numbers are going up?🤯🤨 I have spoken to 5 talent Acquisition Leaders this week, who focus on the Tech market within Germany & Europe🌍 They are receiving hundreds of applications for their DevOps, Cloud & Software roles in a matter of days📈 Surely this makes hiring easier & faster as everything is inbound and there is no need to headhunt, outsource or use other recruitment methods? ❌WRONG❌ Due to an increase in applications, partly due to the advancements of AI technology allowing someone to automate this process instead of taking the time to apply properly a number of critical issues are faced: 🥵Talent teams are exhausted, sifting through volumes of applications that based on the data received, circa 85% are not matching the open position 😓The best candidates for the job can be missed as it is not always possible for Talent teams to get through every application 😤A negative candidate experience as no feedback is given as to why the application did not progress due to inability to respond to everyone 🧐Talent teams are having a job to determine which applications are genuine and which are automated ⌛So much time is wasted when that time could have been invested in sourcing the right person for the job The answer to follow in my next post...🤓 #devops #recruitment #tethr #applications #AI

Working in a consultancy as a data professional... would you do it? Most candidates I speak to seem to land in one of two camps Loving it or hating it. Clients ALWAYS tell me they experience this when interviewing candidates for data roles.... Which means I ALWAYS give this advice to my candidates when interviewing with my clients.... Linking your technical expertise back to value you have added to businesses. It can often be seen on CVs too... They can be full of key words "Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Data Bricks" (for example) on a list underneath a professional profile called 'key skills'. What measurable outputs have YOU personally contributed that have added value for your stakeholders? If you able to communicate examples where you improve operational efficiencies, KPIs, drive revenue, reduce cost, among other things - you will stand out far more from the competition. In doing so you also showcase your commercial acumen which is great if you are pursuing the grander 'head of' roles in your career. All great senior leaders in my network are able to confidently and clearly communicate their ability to monetise data. Agree?
