Ruth Campbell, our Port Chaplain for London, is tackling the neglected issue of cruise ship crew welfare by establishing a dedicated lounge in the Port of Tilbury Terminal. This facility will be used by 8,000 seafarers each year, and 200 crew members each time a cruise ship docks at Tilbury. Our new Head of Corporate Development, Ed Pearce, recently had the opportunity to visit a ship in Southampton. Below, he shares his first-hand experience and reflections on this eye-opening encounter with the maritime world. Ed's perspective offers a fresh look at the vital work of seafarers and the challenges they face. His observations underscore the importance of our mission and the impact we can make in supporting these essential workers. Read his thoughts below
Ahoy, from Southampton! Yesterday, as part of my induction, I had an amazing opportunity to visit a massive container ship in Southampton alongside our Chaplain James and new event team members, Mercedes and David. This incredible vessel held over 20,000 containers and was operated by a crew of just 28! One seafarer said, "it can get very lonely at sea." Their next leg is a 30-day journey from London to Singapore, making us the last friendly faces they'll see for some time. This visit highlighted the crucial role of our Chaplains and volunteers, who made over 43,000 ship visits last year. These visits provide a vital connection for seafarers who spend months away from home. Some crew members told us that they will be at sea for nine months. One seafarer will heartbreakingly miss the birth of their first child. He said that being a seafarer was the only way he could financially support his family in the Philippines. While sitting in the captain's chair was undeniably exciting (who wouldn't love that?), the true highlight was gaining firsthand insight into the incredible work we do to support seafarers' wellbeing globally. I'm incredibly proud to be part of The Mission to Seafarers

Thank you to Hudson Shipping who have started a fundraising campaign in support of our work. Members of the team in Australia, Richard Chilcott and Nigel Crocombe began a "Tour de France" simulation on 29 June and will cover the same distance “Le Tour” does each day, with the event ending on 21 July. Taking place in Western Australia, the ride will see its two participants cover 3492 km between them with only two rest days! Hudson Shipping will match every donation made, so please support Nigel and Richard's efforts by donating here: https://bit.ly/4cyNlxb
