3 of our Aquarist team (Shoshana, Gavin and Tom) were recently invited on a jellyfish research trip to the National Oceanography Centre by the University of Southampton. The aim was to see how we could work in collaboration alongside the University to further support students and expand our research. 🔬 Both Deep Crew and students shared knowledge and expertise via a series of presentations. This was then followed by a trip out on The Solent on the University’s vessel (the R V Callista) to collect tissue samples from native jellyfish species alongside other British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) aquariums! 🪼 #TheDeepHull #Aquarium #ResearchTrip #Research #Jellyfish #Southampton #TheSolent

On Sunday 9th June, a beautiful Gentoo penguin chick hatched at The Deep, weighing a healthy 104g. ❤ The sweet new arrival is being weighed regularly and closely monitored in these crucial early stages by our dedicated penguin keepers, though they are delighted with how the chick’s development is progressing at this stage! Experienced penguin parents Nessie and Stan are diligently nurturing the chick, with the team reporting that both parents are pursuing active roles in feeds and taking turns on the nest. Each day, the chick has been gaining weight as well as beginning to develop an adorable lively personality! 🥰 This chick is a sub species of Gentoo penguin known as Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi and will form part of the EAZA breeding program for Gentoo penguins of which The Deep is a part of. The chick’s sex will not be confirmed until after its first moult, which usually occurs several months after hatching. The feathers are sent for a DNA check which will then determine the sex. Our BSc (Hons) Animal Science, Zoology, and Wildlife and Conservation degree students had an amazing trip to the Yorkshire Coast! They surveyed rocky shores at Flamborough Head, spotted puffins at Bempton Cliffs with insights from a Seabird Conservation officer, and explored the impact of conserving seagrass and oyster beds on local biodiversity at The Deep.
