'We need to spread action on #deforestation across the entire finance sector and stay focused on it." Niki Mardas, our Executive Director, breaks down the significance of London Climate Action Week & announces DEFT Pathway, which will help financial institutions to better engage with portfolio companies 💼 DEFT Pathway, launching in beta later this year, aims to drive aligned engagement from the finance sector on companies, in order to shift deforestation out of their supply chains. It is also a pathway for better integration with #climate and #nature transition frameworks 🌳 #LCAW2024 Nature4Climate Find out more: deftpathway.org

🌳 How to make a pension fund deforestation-free? Swedish pension fund Andra AP-fonden (AP2) worked with Climate & Company to conduct due diligence across their entire equity portfolio in order to meet their commitment to a portfolio free from commodity-driven #deforestation by 2025. 📑 The approach - documented in a report to help other financial institutions move forward on deforestation due diligence - used Deforestation-Free Finance guidance developed by Global Canopy, Neural Alpha and the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute. The finance sector is key to the production and trade of commodities that drive #nature loss. With more practical guidance to support nature-related assessments and engagement processes, financial institutions now have the power to shift the flow of finance towards #sustainable business practices. 💡 Find out more about the step-by-step methodology adopted by Climate & Company and Andra AP-fonden (AP2): https://lnkd.in/ewKccR7R

🌳 In 2014, 11% of financial institutions had at least one publicly available #deforestation policy. A decade later, now 45% have at least one publicly available policy. There has been notable - though slow - progress in 10 years, but we’re in trouble if it takes another decade for the majority of the financial institutions to act on deforestation. Financial institutions have a critical role to play in eliminating deforestation, conversion and associated #humanrights abuses. But as of October 2022, the 150 Forest 500 financial institutions provided $6.1 trillion to the 350 Forest 500 companies. 🏦28 financial institutions that have been included in the Forest 500 every year since 2014 still do not have a public-facing deforestation policy, including BlackRock, Vanguard and T. Rowe Price. Regulation is essential for the finance sector as financial institutions have consistently shown that there is no imperative to act on deforestation. 📑 Have you read our Forest 500 report yet? https://lnkd.in/ex8MCyT3

⌛“Time-bound transition plans for action are a reality for the leaders now and a non-negotiable must-have for everybody else.” #Deforestation is a vital bridge between the intertwined #climate and #nature crises. As climate transition planning takes centre stage, very serious efforts are underway to codify the contribution of nature in climate transition plans. 🌳“Tackling deforestation can and must be at the heart of joined up action on the climate and nature agendas,” says Niki Mardas, our Executive Director. The Deforestation-free Transition Pathway (DEFT) ▶️deftpathway.org◀️, is a vital part of the process enabling financial institutions to engage with companies on deforestation, offering an opportunity to progress on both fronts at once. 🌳 How can Trase help companies, governments and civil society implement the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)? It is a question that our co-directors Helen Bellfield and Toby Gardner are asked regularly. 🔍 There are five main ways Trase can and cannot be used: 1️⃣ Trase can be used to inform risk-based plans to target enforcement checks by competent authorities. 2️⃣ Trase can be used to evaluate the impact of the regulation and provide evidence for planned reviews. 3️⃣ Trase cannot be used by operators and traders to demonstrate compliance in terms of traceability to plots of land. 4️⃣ Trase can be used by operators and traders as one source of evidence in the risk assessment step of the due diligence process (but other data sources would be needed). 5️⃣ Trase data can be used by civil society to help hold governments and companies accountable for effectively implementing the EUDR.
