Investigation by DeSmog shows that TFL has hosted more than 240 advertising campaigns by oil and gas companies including Shell, BP, and ExxonMobil since Mayor Sadiq Khan set his “zero carbon city” goal in 2018. As Adfree Cities' Veronica Wignall said: “Continuing to allow the fossil fuel industry to broadcast across London’s tubes, buses, and billboards undermines the Mayor’s climate goals by allowing some of the world’s top polluters to garner public and political support. This support then translates into delayed action, diluted regulation, and more emissions.” TFL's 2019 ban on junk food ads has had a significant positive impact on people's health. It's time for TFL to do the same for the climate and get rid of fossil fuel ads too. https://lnkd.in/ejyjgiUn
Adfree Cities
Political Organizations
A network of groups highlighting the impacts of corporate advertising on our health, environment, and local communities.
About us
Adfree Cities is a network of groups across the UK who are concerned about the impacts of corporate advertising on our health, wellbeing, environment, climate, communities and the local economy. We lobby for policy change at national and local levels, showcase alternatives, organise locally to stop new advertising sites in UK cities, and produce resources to raise awareness about the impacts of commercial advertising. We want happier, healthier cities free from the pressures of corporate outdoor advertising. Consumerism drives climate and ecological breakdown, harms wellbeing and undermines local resilience. Together we will empower communities to create alternatives. Our movement will keep big brand advertising out of public places. We will make space for what we need to thrive: community connection, solidarity, public art and nature. What we do: Hold the line: We stop new advertising sites in our cities. We support residents and community groups to oppose planning applications for new digital billboards. Positive alternatives: We showcase arts, nature and ad-free space as positive alternatives to corporate advertising. Movement building: We produce resources and organise events to raise awareness about the impacts of corporate advertising on mental health, wellbeing, environmental damage, climate breakdown, body image and the local economy. Lobby for change: We engage in a constructive dialogue with councils about sites they control and changing policies. We explore opportunities for change at a national level, including working with partners on joint campaigns.

Yesterday we joined our friends from the Road Danger Reduction Forum to deliver a letter to the Wimbledon organising committee asking that they drop #RangeRover as the official vehicle of the tournament and end their sponsorship deal with Jaguar Land Rover. High profile sponsorships like this associate Range Rover with luxury, Britishness and traditional values. In reality, big SUVs are a source of luxury emissions, clogging the streets of our towns and cities and leaving a legacy of increased road danger. We want to see Wimbledon instead use sustainable travel like active travel and public transport to ferry players and their teams around the tournament. Read the full letter at https://lnkd.in/e8UeSHS6 and like and share this post if you agree that SUVs have no place on Centre Court 🎾

The UN secretary general has amplified calls for a global ban on fossil fuel advertising. Speaking on June 5, Antonio Guterres accused advertising and PR agencies of "aiding and abetting" fossil fuel industry greenwash. "Mad Men fuelling the madness", he said. "Stop taking on new fossil fuel clients, from today, and set out plans to drop your existing ones." Guterres also called on countries to act by introducing tobacco-style bans on fossil fuel advertising. This is the highest profile call yet for a high carbon ad ban, and comes just a week after Edinburgh City Council passed just such a ban within the city. There is a growing movement to Ban Fossil Ads. Whether at a local, national or international level we all need to act to reduce to influence of polluting industries on our lives. Great to see Edinburgh's world-leading high carbon ad ban covered by LocalGov.co.uk. "We would love to see other councils follow the lead of Edinburgh – and Sheffield, who passed a similar advertising policy in March – and to recognise that advertising and sponsorship is a powerful lever councils can pull to advance not only their climate goals but also their ambitions for public health, biodiversity and providing a high-quality public realm." https://lnkd.in/ecVbxGEV

A huge WIN in Edinburgh as the city council votes to ban high carbon advertising and sponsorship and ads for arms manufacturers. https://lnkd.in/djH5j_p5 We are proud to have supported the amazing work of cllrs Ben Parker and Alys Mumford as they led this motion over the last 2 years. The new ad policy affects council-owned ad spaces like bus stops and will prohibit ads for fossil fuels and fossil fuel companies, airlines and flights, cruises, petrol and diesel cars (including hybrids), SUVs (even electric ones) and arms manufacturers. This is a comprehensive policy and a massive step to align Edinburgh council's climate goals with its everyday operations. Local councils from Bristol to Basingstoke, Sheffield to Somerset and Cambridge to Coventry are leading the way on reducing the presence of harmful advertising on our streets. We've reported these ads by 888casino to the advertising regulator, along with Gambling with Lives and Coalition Against Gambling Ads https://lnkd.in/ebABbiBr The ads appear in outdoor locations and so 888casino has no control over who sees them. The outdoor advertising industry estimates that 95% of the UK population is exposed to outdoor advertising on a regular basis. The audience for the 888casino ads is therefore likely to include children as well as people who are already being harmed by gambling and people who are in recovery from gambling addiction. Some councils are taking action to restrict gambling advertising and other harmful advertising. But they can only do so much. Gambling advertising needs to end, and councils need more power to free our cities from harmful advertising.

After 100 episodes, Rob Hopkins wrapped up his podcast 'From What if To What Next' - but not before bringing together all the bold, creative, ambitious policy ideas that emerged, into the excellent 'Ministry of Imagination' manifesto. We're chuffed to be included in this manifesto for a positive vision of the future with the proposal for a 'Billboard non-proliferation treaty'. Here's to a brighter, ad-free 2030 🌞 https://lnkd.in/eyiphEty
