Susan Sullivan Cancer
ABC/Carol Kaelson

Susan Sullivan is on the mend.

After sharing a cryptic photo of herself in a hospital gown earlier this week, the Falcon Crest and Castle vet revealed Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that she recently underwent surgery to treat lung cancer.

“Thanks for all the lovely comments and concerns,” Sullivan, 80, wrote. “I had lung cancer. The surgery was successful. The healing process is a struggle.”

Sullivan alarmed fans on Monday when she posted the hospital-set image on X alongside the caption, “Life‘s surprising little turns… [I] try to be ready for them with humor and hope. On we go.”

Sullivan played mom to Nathan Fillion’s titular Castle sleuth during all eight seasons of the ABC procedural, which ended in 2016. Prior to that, she spent much of the ’80s starring as Maggie Gioberti Channing on CBS’ massively successful primetime soap Falcon Crest.

Her TV resume also includes the short-lived ABC hospital drama Julia Farr, M.D. (for which she received a 1979 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress) and a supporting role as Thomas Gibson’s snooty mom in ABC’s Dharma & Greg (1997-2002).
