Stephen Root should yabba-dabbo-do! just fine as the voice of Fred in Bedrock, Fox‘s in-the-works follow-up to The Flintstones.
Amy Sedaris, meanwhile, is set to voice Wilma in the prospective adult animated comedy, our sister site Deadline reports.
Penned by Lindsay Kerns (DC Super Hero Girls) and with Elizabeth Banks voicing grown-up Pebbles as well as exec-producing, Bedrock will catch up with the Flintstones two decades after the classic cartoon was set, with Fred on the brink of retirement and a 20something Pebbles embarking on her own career.
“As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club,” quips the synopsis.
Other voice cast additions for what at this point is just a pilot presentation include Nicole Byer (Grand Crew) as Betty, Joe Lo Trulio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Barney, and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) as Bamm-Bamm.
“Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog, or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock,” Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said back in April 2021, when the project was first put into development. “Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable, and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.”
“The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” added Warner Bros. Animation EVP Peter Girardi. “Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and Fox and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock (sorry).”
I wonder if the Rumbles will be redrawn in diverse ethnicity based on casting. I think this could be interesting if done correctly. It typically takes an animated series a while to hit the air, so we likely won’t see it anytime soon, even if ordered to series.
Hopefully, lessons were learned from Velma… we don’t want another travesty on another Hanna-Barbera property.
Yes, but I think that Velma would have failed even if it left the characters original race intact. It was just a dreadful retelling and reconstruction. I can’t believe WBD dropped the Scooby-Doo movie they had in the can, but kept Velma.
I tried to watch Velma but never got past the first few minutes; I didn’t mind the comedy but when will they stop switching races on established shows. Enough is enough. Be original. I hope Bedrock does better.
Their last name is Rubble, not Rumble.
Yes, spell check typo…
If they do, it will fail as it is following them 20 years after so they would have to be the same
Considering Lindsay Kerns track record, I wouldn’t be too optimistic about this show or them honoring HB’s original marriage for Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm. Sometimes the best things in life are those that know when to end, and Flintstones was better off ending with either The Man Called Flintstone or Hollyrock A Bye-Baby.
Wasn’t Seth Macfarlane attached to rebooting the series at one point (at least before the 2021 development)?
Correct. MacFarlane left Fox for Peacock (excluding Family Guy), with a new development deal. The new Ted series will be on Peacock. Based on the FG cutaways, a MacFarlane Flintstones series would be hilarious.
As a man who painted his Harley like Fred Flintstone’s shirt, I am a big fan. I hope they just go for entertainment and not try to mss was #kindnessrenaissance a social point like they did with Velma, and the 90s Show.
I love all the actors cast for Bedrock. Fox please say yes. Looking forward to watching this live not recorded. To me toons are best live.
Yeah this looks great I’m looking forward to it
I wish I could talk to someone on my Flintstones story. It’s a darker take, but gives a great opening for a different type of continuing stories. Basically the ice age is coming, they have to leave bedrock to go west to Hollyrock to regroup with Pebbles and Bamm Bamm who live there. It brings back Arnold who is now a reporter, and Joe Rockhead who is a survivalist staying in Bedrock at the water Buffalo lodge. It answers the questions on Gazoos real story and why Bamm Bamm is strong. in leaving Bedrock they have to eat most of their appliances to survive. What do you think.?
Got a feeling this is gonna disappoint a lot of adults that watched the Flinstones as kids. Not too fond of it being labeled an adult animated comedy. Last thing I want to watch is Family Guy in the Stone Age
Yabba Dabba DON’T!!!
